In yesterday's first 20 minutes, Hope's starting 5 raced out to a 10 to 0 lead, but then lost by a slight margin after, yes, being outrebounded.  My comment at that point was "I like Hope's guards and Ferris State's rebounding."

The second twenty minutes Hope started their fab four frosh, and I thought they all looked excellent.  They sat down after 7 minutes or so with a comfortable lead, which their teammates maintained and increased thereafter.

Two things I loved seeing (if a mere scrimmage was any indication):
1) the team's seeming depth this year, thanks to the addition of the new players, including Brandon Bosch (a tough defender).
2) the push-the-ball-up fast-paced offense.  As with Hope's women's team, this may result in a few more turnovers but also more excitement and a higher scoring offense.  Kelvin Carter, for example, seemed unselfishly eager to push the ball up into his teammates hands (despite a couple errant passes).

That said, HopeConvert is surely right:  Calvin's height in the post, not to mention their guards, will present tough starting-five matchups for Hope.

Re. Justin Keenan, he probably could have --averaged-- 20 in high school, but for Ottawa Hills' ridiculously selfish guard play.

Re. Grayling in districts, it had a good team in 2006, but was knocked out by Petoskey on a half-court shot by Corbin Donaldson (Cornerstone). Last year, Grayling wasn't a good team even playing as a Class B team in a Class C league, and was actually better with just one twin on the court at a time.

The Hornets take on Hillsdale in an exhibition game tomorow. It will be very interesting to see how the team chemistry and flow of the game is with such a large freshman class. If to much inexperience is on the floor at the same time the older guys can feel out of sync when people aren't in the right spots at the right time. Also, we will get a glimpse of how the coaches will handle the big man situation at K this year. After kellogg, I don't know what their plan is. I'm sure they will play him as much as possible, but will he bring in a freshman backup (who will be undersized anyway) or will coach P go with a smaller lineup and hope that creates an advantage for K with mismatches. We will probably get a glimpse of both those possibilities in the exhibition game.

An interesting side note for the game, Travis Worst for Hillsdale is the younger brother of Tyler Worst who was the captain for K last year. Travis was very heavily recruited at Kalamazoo and I know a lot of us K fans were hoping he would end up there. Hes a great guy, but I hope K comes away with a win to leave a bitter taste in his mouth. I'm sure its nothing the scholarship money can't comfort :).

Young with 17, and then the rest of the stats are ugly,   The only curiosity to me is Lamar Cardenas only playing 16 minutes

Thought that game would have been a bit closer

HOF

Alright here...I'm new to the MIAA hoops, but have been on the MIAA football...making the switch....

Anyways...I'm reading that Adrian played Oakland tonight.  It says on the Adrian website that it was an exhibition for them, but counted for Oakland.  That can't happen can it?  I thought the general rule was it was both for each team, not pick and chose what is an exhibition or what counts?

Insight ruling?

Pat, Sac ... (I've been reading from a far, I know who knows there stuff...lol)

Looking forward to this year and talking here.

That doesn't sound right to me, but I'm not up on the rules as much as I used to be.

If Calvin wins this Friday night, it looks like they play Saturday at 3.  Glad the Michigan game is at noon this year, although I don't know if I'll be in the mood to go if Michigan gets another loss to OSU,

Adrian    46

Rough start for the Bulldogs yesterday.  Oakland was a strong team.  I have to believe they will cause some trouble in their conference this year.

Offensively, Adrian could not get anything going on the inside.  Oakland simply had too many talented big guys, and raised serious matchup problems.  Because of that, our offense became relatively one dimensional, and since shooting was cold throughout the game, the offense suffered.

Although the Bulldogs had their troubles in the half court set, most of the problems came when Oakland opted to extend their defense.  Adrian had a lot of turnovers today, and many of them were on the wrong side of half court, resulting in easy buckets for the Grizzlies.

Defensively, our big guys really stepped up and held their bigs to relatively low offensive output.  Ian Weber played very well, despite scoring no points.  He grabbed 7 boards in situations where he was considerably outsized.

In spite of the fact that the big guys played well, Oakland simply got too many second chances--24 offensive rebounds.  Most of those resulted in layups and tip ins.

Desmond Young looked like he belonged out there.  He got his pocket picked early in the game, and nothing remotely like that happened the rest of the way.  He was able to get a good shot at will, and made enough of them to keep Oakland honest.

The score aside, there were lots of good things to take from the game.  It's really easy to quit when you're down by 40, but this group kept fighting, diving for loose balls, and working hard on both ends of the court until the end.  We also got good minutes from Derek Spare, Mike Sutton, and Dwight VanHoesen, three guys who will add depth to this roster.  Corey Smith looked good coming off the bench, and may work his way into a starting role at some point during the season.

As for the Michigan/Ohio State dilemma, I'm in a similar position with the Bulldogs.  If they win on Friday, they'll be playing at 4pm in the Merillat Center.  I'm guessing the Michigan game will end around 3:30 (hopefully with many happy fans in maize and blue streaming from the stadium).  I'll be at the game, and depending on my mood, might try to make it down to scenic Lenawee County for the second half.  However, I doubt anyone would blame me if I couldn't make it.

I'm also not sure about the rule for exhibitions, specifically split exhibitions, but I can confirm that it was Adrian's belief that last night was an exhibition for them, and a real game for Oakland.

<ring, ring, ring>   Division III coach:  Hello!

Div I coach:  Hey, its (coaches name) from (coaches university) how are you doing.

DIII coach: good, good Hey (coaches name) could you make this quick I have a class to teach in about 5 minutes.

DI coach:  <silence> You,.......you teach class?  Anyway hey I was wondering if you'd be interested in setting up a game between our fine institutions sometime in early November.  We'd give you a handsome paycheck of course.

DIII coach:   Gee, you know I don't know

DI coach:  Well here's the thing, YOU can treat it as an exhibition, and it will be a real game for us.   Won't even count against your record.  So we both win, in a manner of speaking.   How's that sound.

DIII coach: O.....K......  ummm is this legal?

DI coach:  yeah, yeah can you believe it.

DIII coach:  no I can't, but it sounds good.  Put us down for the game.......uh exhibition and we'll see you then.

DI coach:  Ha, ha great, great sounds like a deal.  Well you have fun teaching your "class".........(chuckles)

DIII coach:  I will, I'll have my AD call yours and arrange everything.  I really have to go I'm late, I don't like to keep my students waiting.

DI coach:  You were serious?

DIII coach:  <click>

From some limited research (my understanding) is D3 can't practice before Oct 15, and can only play scrimages or exhibition games prior to 11-15.  Games after that date count towards total games allowed.  D1 schools started practice sooner, and any games played after 11-8 have to count towards their yearly total of games allowed.  The  papers are showing D-1 with games played records.  So a game can be "pre-season" exhibition for one team, while it has to count towards total for the other team.  I am sure some other posters may have more, greater or better insight. :)  In the past it seemed like all levels had the same start date, and that seems to have changed.  I did not do any research to see if D2 Hillsdale's game vs. Kalamazoo counts for them or not.

There are many unanswered questions for this Hornets squad.  PnR brought up some good ones. I think their post play is a big concern.  How aggressive will Kellogg be?  K needs to get him more involved in their offense. On the defensive side, if Mat gets in foul trouble, it will be a long night for the Hornets.

I think another question is how much of a leader Pat Clancy will be on the floor this year. Will he hold himself and his teammates accountable to playing good, solid Hornet defense?  Or are putting up shots more important?  I'd like to see him play with a little more fire, and lead this team.

It will be nice having Henry back.  He should be a boost on offense, no doubt.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to see K play until the GVSU game a week from Tuesday.

There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

One might think that the nearer one gets to blowing coffee out one's nose, the greater the likelihood of giving positive karma.  At any rate, +K to you, FDF, for your almost certain discomfort.
