alum - thanks for the concern over my nasal passages   ;D

I just posted a suggested rule change for our pick 'em this year on the MIAA Pick 'em board, along with a poll for you to all vote about the proposed change.  Please take a look and vote.

If Calvin wins this Friday night, it looks like they play Saturday at 3.  Glad the Michigan game is at noon this year, although I don't know if I'll be in the mood to go if Michigan gets another loss to OSU,

I'd love to meet/say hi to any posters who will be at the Calvin tournament this weekend.  I'll probably be sitting with the parents behind the bench.  Looking forward to basketball season.

The Hornets fell to Hillsdale last night 79-52 at Hillsdale.  They were only down 7 with 7 to play, but it was all Chargers after that.    K shot a woeful 21% from the field, 18% from behind the line.  Free throws were the only thing that was keeping them in the ball game.  I can't attest to how they played, as I was following the live stats.

PicknRoll, were you there?

MIAA posters,

Can someone tell me what to expect from Tri-State?  IWU faces them Friday at the Albion tournament.  Having seen Albion last year, I am somewhat familiar with the Britons.

Thanks for any Tri-State scoop you can provide.

Tri-state is a bit of an enigma. I don't think we've ever had Tri-state posters here.

Last year they were 16-10 over all and 9-5 in the MIAA, just a game behind Calvin. They also had a win against Calvin last year. Of course, the week before, they got blown out at Hope by 44 points. Though they are losing four seniors including a very good 3-point shooter, they're keeping All-MIAA first team Tony Benford, who was a sophomore last year.

Their season outlook report sounds very hopeful about continuing the trend of improvement of the last couple of years. (http://www.tristate.edu/tsuathletics/mensbasketball/mbballoutlook.cfm)

I almost didn't post this, because you could find this info for yourself with 5 minutes of googling, but here it is, in case it's helpful.

stinger, yes I was at the game. If I had to rate the hornets, the score is not indicative at all how well they played. What transpired was the Hillsdale coach playing it like a real game, and Coach Passage playing it more like a scrimmage.

For the first about 27 minutes of the game hillsdale would take a lead by 5/6 and then the hornets would come back to tie or take a one shot lead. During this time coach P played his best rotation of his top 8/9 guys. Then with Hillsdale up about 4 points or so with 15 minutes to play, Coach P started giving his numerous freshman some much needed experience. K started to play some real sloppy basketball at this point, and hillsdale had their starting 5 in until 2 or at most 3 minutes left in the game. With that said, I'm going to focus on what happened in the first 27 minutes as i'm pretty sure coach P isn't going to be having 4 freshman and a first year varsity sophomore on the floor to much during the season.

Our top 8 looked real solid, despite shooting not good at all and to many turnovers. They played pretty well together. One thing I really wish they would get better at is becoming more physical on offense. I never saw a guy light anyone else up on a screen that made me cringe for the guy on defense, back in the day this was a staple of hornet offense (am I wrong on this stinger?), to get their shooters open. On defense they got to the spots quick. For the most part guys were flying around and getting to the right spots, which limited Hilldale and made them take a lot of 3s, or so it seamed.

Ben Jerome played well at point, he gets by his guy when he wants to and did a good job of running the offense. His backup, a freshman, is solid, and thats all he should be conerned about being with all the other freshman. Pat played solid, he'll shoot better most nights, but did a good job with the rest of his game. Henry will also shoot better, but rebounded well and he is always a good defender with his athleticism. The guys missed Kellogg a few times on good posts up, but then again Kellogg had a very good player in Gugino gaurding him and the other center was 6'10 about 330lbs. Jon Matych can light it up and has the quickest release i've seen in a long time in D3, if he gets on its a huge spark, he showed a glimpse of this yesterday and everyone in the gym thought when he shot it was going in. Expect Mat Wagner to be a very solid player for the hornets, I think he is probably the smartest player as far as having an understanding for the game. last but not least, Nate Orozco will be a player for the hornets that can put up a quit 10-15 points without anyone knowing, nothing flashy but can knock down open shots.

In sum, most people their were impressed with the hornets, they knew the score didn't indicate how well they played.

Thanks for the info PnR.  Obviously you don't get a great read for the game from Livestats. I did notice all the freshman on the floor in last 10 minutes.  At least they received some good minutes.

Looks like Matt Veltema played his way into the starting lineup with a stellar showing Saturday against LSSU.
KVS told the esteemed members of the West Michigan media that he's opening with sophomore John Mantel at the 5, junior Tim Katt at the 4, sophomore Veltema at the 3, senior Derek Griffin at the 2, and junior Caleb Velthouse at the 1.
Look for Engelsma, Schuster and Smith to get a lot of minutes off the bench.

Knight Club is no more, Calvin fans.  This year, the student section will be called the "Knightmares" and will wear black shirts!

What parking?  You found parking at the Fieldhouse this year? ;)

You can park on the baseball diamond, and just ignore Campus "Safety" if they yell at you.    ;)
