Calvin doing too much fouling-giving the Bears a chance to score without moving the clock.

Could be a case of over-rated vs. Calvin's better than advertised.

I definitely think Calvin is better than advertised. I think the d3hoops preseason poll had Hope and Calvin flip-flopped (as did the MIAA poll, in my opinion). Great win for Calvin and the MIAA.

Now if Hope would just play a game one day!

Well we now have some idea how Calvin can play.  Someone said they would need an A game, and this came very close to that.  Caleb only going 6 of 12 at the stripe hurt, but thankfully was offset by Wash U shooting only 45% at the stripe.  For only the second game of the year it was outstanding.  Calvin kept leaving the door open, but credit should go to Wash. U they are a very, very good team.  I think KVS said it something like " he'd rather not see that team again".

Knight Club is no more, Calvin fans.  This year, the student section will be called the "Knightmares" and will wear black shirts!

Looks like the old Fieldhouse was a Knightmare for the Bears.

Congrats, Calvin!  That must have been one exciting game!

Kudos to Calvin!

As a Hope fan, this was a rare day when I felt myself pulling for Calvin---to represent the MIAA well against formidable competition.

But how I wish Hope could have caught Wash U on a night when they didn't hit---what was it---21 of 22 free throws?

This bodes well for Calvin and for the excitement of this season, including what we can hope will be a Hope-Calvin matchup in a week.

No and yes to your two questions. WashU is a very fine team. Despite losing this afternoon the Bears look a lot like a team that can reach Salem--something they did just 8 months ago. Calvin students trotted out that ridculous "over-rated" chant fans use every time a number one ranked team falls. I don't know why fans want to disrespect their own team's victory over a high quality opponent but that's what they always seem to do.

Calvin is also a very fine team. I posted after Calvin's win over Grace last night that the Knights needed to tighten up the defense when they played WashU and that happened. Calvin came out as focused and intense for 40 minutes as any Calvin team of recent years. But for some mystifyingly bad free throw shooting by two of the finest free throw shooters in D3 (Veldhouse and Veltema) and two blown wide-open second half layups off fast breaks, Calvin would have won this game with some comfort and not by the five point final margin. The Knights move the ball well and they now have excellent post scoring which makes life for their perimiter players much easier. This also makes life for opposing defenses much tougher. Calvin got 28 points out of the post (18 for Mantel and 10 for Engelsma) against a strong WashU front line. This bodes well for Calvin's future prospects. Calvin clearly has a solid front line, a wealth of good shooters, and experience.

Some of us seemed a little nervous after Friday night's 27 point win over Grace Bible. After seeing Grace lose this afternoon to ONU by 5 in a very competitive game, I think we have underrated Grace's club and, consequently, Calvin's win last night. Grace is very well-coached, hard-working, they are a good shooting team and with about two more players would compete very well in the MIAA. They gave ONU all they could handle.

Mr. Ypsi

Congratulations on a BIG win for Calvin. :)

Albion came from a 9-point late-first-half deficit to easily notch the first MIAA win over the CCIW in over a year, 75-55.  But couldn't the MIAA have done it against someone other than my Titans? :'(

I've said it before: this Calvin team has a chance to be scary good. It wouldn't surprise me if they ended up in Salem. It might surprise me if they don't.  A great win for them.
