Happy Thanksgiving to all the posters. Family, turkey, a Lion's loss - all the things we can count on every Thanksgiving.

A story in the Press today about the HoF Classic. Says there anyone can win. I'm not so sure. I think you'd have to say Calvin is the favorite going in, especially since Hope has no games under its belt. I'm looking forward to reconnecting with fellow posters on Saturday, and hopefully meeting some new ones. For the record, I'll be wearing a Hope hoodie and an orange ballcap that says Mistwood Gof Course on it. CCM, OK, GK - looking forward to meeting you all. Sac, FDF, CM, PL and others - hope to see you there.

I hope you are all blessed beyond measure today.  May your cup runneth over.

I think the Lions are going to pull this one out.  I'll be looking for you, HC.

Down here in St. Louis, I will be more than a little interested in the Hanover - Olivet result.  Since leaving Holland and Hope 20 years ago, I have supported Wash U, and in the last 5 or 6 years have grown attached to the SLIAC, a d3 conference which undeniably is in the low third, or fourth or tenth of all the D3 conferences.   However, the competition is level and spirited, and I thoroughly enjoy viewing games.

Webster of the SLIAC beat HCAC schools Transylvania and Hanover last weekend - one of the best weekend performances I can ever remember frm a SLIAC school.   It supports the fact that the SLIAC is attracting a little better level of players than in the past, and can compete with middle level conferences given the right matchups.   The Olivet Hanover game will make a nice comparison for me of the SLIAC's best vs a middle / lower MIAA school.  Hanover was the better of the two teams from the HCAC - nice perimeter shooters, banged the boards hard, good defence.  Their offense however, seemed to go nowhere fast, and many times they ran the shot clock down and had to force up a poor shot.

AND, in another note, to all the wonderful posters here that I met up in Wisconsin last year and had so much fun with - A very Happy Thanksgiving
The only thing not to be liked in Florida is no D3 hoops!!!

The knights get another test against a high-scoring center today. Matt Kingshott of Cornerstone averages 21.9 points and 8.4 rebounds, more than a quarter of the Golden Eagles' points, and just about a quarter of their rebounding, in 32 minutes per game.

If the knights play with the intensity they had against Wash U, they should be able to contain him, but will they be looking back at that game, or ahead to a possible Hope game? This will be a good test of whether they can bring the same intensity to every game. I'm going to guess Calvin by 15.

Does anybody know anything about Defiance? I can't say I know much at all about their program historically or how they are this year. Hornets are playing them Sunday for their first home game of the year and hopefully first win.

Defiance was picked 2nd in the Heartland Conference

Franklin 75 (5)
Defiance 73 (3)
Transy 55
Hanover 52
Bluffton 42
MSJ 34
Anderson 30 (1)
Manchester 26
RHIT 18

Thus far they're off to a slow start at 1-2 with a win over Thomas More and losses to OAC'ers Wilmington and Heidelberg, which by all accounts are pretty close to middle of the pack OAC teams.  It would be a nice win for the Hornets.

Hope has dropped its first game of the season to Aquinas 78-69 in OT.

I knew Aquinas would be a tough a game, they always are and had the benefit of playing 4 games already. I really wish Hope would have had a "warm-up" game last weekend or Monday or Tuesday of this week at home against a Finlandia or one of the other teams Hope has opened with in the past in what should be a guaranteed win.

I only was able to listen to OT of this game but it sounds like MVH was 7-12 on Free Throws. How did everyone else do? I have said this on the board in years past but I am always surprised/disappointed at how poorly some of Hope's players shoot free throws. I expect that 80% should be the minimum for what is typically a fundamentally sound team of shooters.

Well here is tomorrow night being a win!

Sac was prescient in noting that a Hope/Calvin matchup was no gimme. Not the way I wanted to preclude it, however.  ;) Not out of the question they could meet in the consolation game tomorrow, as at the half the Calvin/Cornerstone game is a close one. I don't think any of us were hoping to meet in the consolation game.

Nonetheless, I'm looking forward to watching some basketball tomorrow. I need to get the games in while I can.

Calvin up by 14 with 12 and a half left. The difference so far? Calvin is shooting 46% from the field, Cornerstone 27%. I'll be interested in hearing from observers whether that is due to Calvin's defense, poor shooting or shot selection, or a combination.

Big play by Engelsma as Cornerstone climbs back into the game. This is something that has impressed me about VandeStreek: his teams always seem to score off a timeout. He's very good at setting up good plays off the inbounds.

Final, Calvin 82 Cornerstone 77

Veldhouse finished with 32 points.

Game over. Weird stat line: Cornerstone took 17 more shots, grabbed 6 more rebounds (including 7 more offensive rebounds), 1 more steal, four fewer turnovers, and still lost. A clear difference in the number of foul shots, but that was padded by the foul-a-thon at the end. The difference sure seems to be Veldhouse, who kept hitting big shots every time CU made a run. 32 points. Wow.

As you can see, I miss watching basketball.

When Ryan Klein, Jesse Reimink, Tyler Wolfe, and especially Derek VanSolkema lack intensity on both ends of the floor, you get what we got tonight.  Hope played apathetic defense, and didn't seem to want to rebound at all.  A distracted and lackadaisacal DVS is the last thing this team needs.  Also, DVS and Kelvin Carter were either unable or unwilling to penetrate at all.  When Hope passes the ball around the perimeter, with no inside game, and little movement, their offense suffers mightily, as it did tonight.  On a bright note, Marcus played with the kind of intensity, willingness to go inside, and rebounding that his talent is capable of providing every night, but his effort prevents him from doing so.  Our freshmen played well, giving the team a spark when they were in.  Let's hope that this lights a fire under our veterans, who on this night looked ignored, and unwilling to lead or step up.

Anyone have a link to the stat line for the Hope Aquinas game?
