The intensity was back, Coach VanWieren sent a wake up call to Derek, and our freshmen sparkled.  All is well again in Hope land.  Kudos to MVH for another great game.

Hope Convert-any other info on Sean Wallis?  I could not find anything specific.  (only his absence in the box score, and a press release of the game saying he did not play; it did not state why)

Sac,
I know you were at the game and I guess this is for anyone else as well. It sounds like Marcus Vanderheide had a pretty good weekend! .

Marcus and Doug Sharples are the early team leaders in floor burns.  Friday night MVH must have hit the deck a dozen times and was on a similar pace Saturday.  Marcus played much like he did vs Carroll (which is a girl's name) in the tournament last March.   It was good to see.

SAC -

In regards to the "Carroll" reference - I'm thinkin' that Archie Bunker might not be too pleased with your comment.... :)

According to Hopefan, reporting on the SLIAC board, Wallis tore his ACL and fractured his leg in the game against Maryville. He is scheduled for surgery and will miss the rest of the season. Wallis had started a nice little blog on the D3Hoops site, and was obviously excited for this season. My heart goes out to the kid.

Yesterday I wrote "Calvin should do okay if they control the boards",  and that didn't happen.   One almost has to assume that Mantel wasn't feeling well, or has some injury.  Trying to square the boxscores with playing time, and productivity makes Mantel, Engelsma, and perhaps Koetsier rested and riding the pine at the end an interesting coaching decision which FDF pointed out above.  I have never been a big fan of the 3 guard offense as I think it causes too many problems with rebounding.  A player going 1 of 6 at the line with 1 rebound and 5 total points in 29 minutes, and another going 1 of 4 at the line with 5 rebounds, and 7 points in 36 minutes while better potential rebounders sit is not (imho) a player problem.

BogeyMan

I was tired of reading about Hope and Calvin so I wrote some controversial material below.  Please understand I am not a follower of any paticular team just a Great Lakes D-3 fan.

I went back about a week reading and trying to catch up on the MIAA.  Sac don't count Heidelberg out of the running, they were picked second by the OAC coaches.  B-W does not belong in the preseason polls.  John Carroll and Ohio Northern are not bad.  OW is very good this year.  Good chance they will take the top spot from Wooster in the NCAC.  My top preseason picks in the Great Lakes are:

1.  Ohio Weslyan
2 - 4.  No paticular order:  Wooster, Calvin, Hope
5.  Capital
6.  Several possibilities:  Wittenberg, Heidelberg, Albion

Albion only because of a good win at John Carroll today and a tough OT loss to Div II Hillsdale.

Adrian 73, Mount Union 72
Olivet 90, Brescia, Ky. 85
Albion 82, John Carroll 81 (ot)
Defiance 79, Kalamazoo 69

MIAA now 13-16, last year at this point 11-15

This week

Tuesday, Nov. 27
Aquinas at Alma, 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Nov. 28
Albion at Spring Arbor, 8 p.m.
Olivet at Concordia, 7:30 p.m.

Friday
Hope vs Wheaton
Calvin vs  Carthage

Saturday, Dec. 1
Alma at Elmhurst, Ill., 7:30 p.m.
Adrian at Oberlin, Ohio, 3 p.m.
Concordia, Ill. at Tri-State, 3 p.m.
Kalamazoo at Chicago, Ill., 1 p.m.
Hope vs Carthage
Calvin vs Wheaton

The league has a relatively light week, but a number of winnable games.  A winning record this week would be wonderful.  The one's in bold I think are the headline games of the week.  Remember Spring Arbor blasted Albion at Albion last winter.

Didn't see either game this weekend for the Bulldogs, nor did I speak with anyone at the games, but they've got to be happy to have bounced back and salvaged a split after a disappointing loss last night against Case Western.

Can anyone provide info on Stephen Kratz?  I reviewed box scores and did not see him listed, is he injuried?

I finally got a chance to catch up on some of the posts from this weekends game. My first question is did the paper's in MI on Sunday or today mention any reason why Carter started over DVS? Wake-up call? Balance young players and frosh on the second line? Other?

It sounds like MVH had a great weekend, which is definitely great news. He has the talent to be a force all year long so hopefully he'll keep up his high level of play.

I am really looking forward to Friday's game against Wheaton for Hope should be a really good measuring stick game.

- Based on the two games I saw this weekend, Calvin looked to be one dimensional - Caleb Veldhouse.

- Interesting combo on the floor for Calvin at the end of regulation, and most of the overtimes - Veldhouse, Griffin, Smith, Zoerhof, Kaat

- Coming off the win over Wash U - Calvin sounded like a top 10, maybe top 5 team.  They have some serious work to do to climb back up to that level.  With all those big bodies, they lived and died on guard play.  AQ, a rather small team, ruled the glass, finishing with three guys with double-doulbes.

I think the games this past weekend definitely gave a different look to the team.  I don't think Calvin is one-dimensional, especially since last weekend it, there were a number of other players who carried a lot of the load.  I think it is simply the second weekend of the season and things are being tried and worked out.  I guess it's easy to over analyze, but I'll leave that to the coaching staff.  Calvin has a lot of weapons and not everyone is going to have their best game each night, thus the beauty of depth and a great team chemistry.

One last point: Calvin got no production at all from freshmen.  With Hope getting a good amount, Calvin's going to have to hit the recruiting trail very hard to get some talent in to avoid a huge dropoff after the Mantel/Veltema class.  Losing Kelvin DeVries (darn C-stone and their scholarship dollars....the sell-outs) hurt a lot in this regard.

This doesn't surprise me.  Hope has 6 seniors and 4 freshman.  To me that means there is a bit more urgency to integrating their freshman and getting them ready for next year.  I could be way off on that.  Calvin, on the other hand, has only 1 senior and only 2 freshman.  They have 2 sophomores new to the team, so it seems to me they would be more focused on integrating those new sophomores and strengthening the team which will be the same guys playing next year, as they only lose (but a big loss) Derek.
