Can anyone provide info on Stephen Kratz?  I reviewed box scores and did not see him listed, is he injuried?

He'll be fine, and should be suited up this weekend; probably on Saturday.

Well I was at the hornets - defiance game Sunday afternoon. I can't say I was pleased with what I saw.

Lets start with our defense. #5 for Defiance came into the game averaging 15 ppg, hes listed at 5'10, but he is certainly not taller than 5'8. He looked the same height as the hornets starting PG, Ben Jerome who is 5'6. I'll give it to him, #5 had some great moves, a nice shot, great patience when driving, and knew how to get himself open. But for him to go for 37 points against the hornets is ridiculous. I never saw one Kzoo player get fired up when this kid possession after possession walked all over K on our home court. No way he should ever score over 25. Granted the kid caught fire, but coach P repeatedly told kids to go in, forget the defensive rules, and don't let him touch the ball. Aparently this did not register in any of our players mind for the first 38 minutes of the game as he got the ball at will and did what he wanted.

On top of that, this has to be the most quiet hornet defense I have ever heard. As any hornet fan can attest, games like this with no more than 100 or so people in the Rolla Dome, anyone can be heard with a mildly loud voice. But, there simply wasn't much talking at all going on. Maybe this contributes to #5 single handedly taking over. On a positive note, McCain and Kellogg are big athletic bodies with great shot blocking abilities when our defense is penetrated.

Well lets move on to our offense. Henry McCain had a solid game, I think hes shown to be a tough guy to gaurd as long as he can keep himself in the game and choose the right times to make his moves. Mat Kellogg could have dominated this game if he got the touches he should have, when he got the ball in a low post position scoring came easy for him. Besides that, I don't feel the other guys played bad offensively, but just not great chemistry yet. If a shooter hits a shot you would expect some guys to screen for him next time down to get him going, but that awareness isn't quite there yet. Another positive, a few times I thought a couple plays we ran were executed well, leading to an open lay-up or shot. Obviously I'm more concerned with what happens after the play.

As for the game itself, it was a very close first half, #5 had 16 at halftime and we were playing pretty well. I think we went into halftime down 4. In the second half #5 really went off. Even when we would hit a big 3 to cut the lead to 5 no one got fired up about it. We would remain at a low intensity and let #5 put the lead back to 7/8.

Anyone else that was there have any comments? Stinger I believe I saw you there? Anyone listen to it on the radio or gamecast have thoughts?

Does anyone know how many tickets are going to be available for this weekends games at Calvin? From what I have heard, Calvin has had to cut down the number of tickets due to the construction on their new gym (those copy cats)  ;D and the fire marshal.  I guess this weekend could be a possible sell out due to the lack of tickets. I know I will be staying for both games on friday night so I can get my first look at both Hope and Calvin.

Oldknight, seems to feel there should be no problem getting a seat for the Hope/Wheaton game.  There will probably be another congested changeover of fans between games.

Wheaton and Carthage will have no more than parents at the game.

If I remember right its the East upper stands that are closed, which seems like that still leaves alot of seats, in the neighborhood of 3000.  I'm guessing this is not going to be a problem.

The crowds waits with heavy anticipation as FDF nears the 100 karma plateau.

Will he be accused of running up the karma, will it be considered unsportmanlike.   Will he spell words correctly under this intense pressure.

Are there free tacos for everyone in attendance involved?

Stay tuned.

I believe Calvin has requested that Hope limit the number of assistant coaches for this weekend games to help ease any overcrowding.  :D

You'd think he'd at least hand out tootsie pops to everyone to celebrate this GRAND occasion!   :)

I had them ready to go, but alas, I'm back to 99.  However, those who sat with me on Friday, and also braved the same the next night through 2 games and 2 overtimes will be well rewarded   ;D

Re: Fieldhouse seating.  The Calvin SID sent out a note on this recently, and I can't put my finger on it at this moment.  If memory serves correctly the max is now down to about 2500 from the norm. of 4500.  My feeling is Hope fans have the early game both days so getting in shouldn't be a problem.  Yes, the east area is the one under construction, and the doors to the east are gone.  Parking is a struggle, and getting around campus is confusing with all the construction.  Never fear, however, as it is all covered under the masterplan! :D
p.s. The fieldhouse opened in 1965, and not that it matters, but by my count we will shortly have a 2 fieldhouse to 1 advantage.  So my ? is who is copying whom ???

Hope College founded 1866

Calvin College founded 1876

The answer is clear.  ;)

CCM: Thanks for your comments, and insight.  It is important to look at the long term, and not get frustrated by a great performance by a talented AQ team.
As impressive as the Hope fr. were it seems like young Mr. De Vries from CU may have been the most impressive with 13 pts., and 13 rebounds against Calvin, and 17 points against Hope.  He sure seemed to handle the pressure well.
