in regards to the alma-aq game, there were 2 guys from aquinas who played tonight who got their first minutes of the season.  Does anyone know the NAIA rules pertaining to red-shirting?  Minutes allowed etc...

Odds on DVS returning to his starting position on Friday?

Not sure of opposing teams size, but I'm curious to see if wolfe and tanis see more time on the floor together.  One to give "Tyler" more time to get in the flow of the offense and knock down some shots and "Ty" because he has shot so well the  games (including ferris) that I've watched.

Did DVS play really poorly Friday night or something?  Because I saw Hope's game Saturday and he looked really sharp.  He had some really nice passes.

He was downright awful.  Ignored, no defense, no dribble penetration, poor shooting, poor attitude.  GVW sent Derek a wakeup call, and Derek got it.  That's why he looked so sharp on Saturday.

I know this has nothing to do with any topic but does anyone know why I can't send personal messages to anyone? I'm geussing I have to make a certain amount of posts before I am allowed to???

You are correct, but I don't recall what the cutoff is

For some reason I've tried to listen to Aquinas/Alma and the broadcast is as brutal as the game.  AQ has led by 30 or around there the whole time. 63-31 with 7 min to go.

I'm chalking it up as an L.

Chalked.

There has been a lot of talk about the fab four freshman at Hope, but the freshman class actually goes deep into the JV team. It has been said that this is one of the best classes that GVW has ever had at Hope.  There are some very strong players on the JV that would probably make most other MIAA varsity teams. These players include Brian Weise(North Carolina), Jeff Keyser(East Jordan), Rob Guimond(the Sault),  and Kurtiss Carrol(South Lyon). If they all stay with the program and don't get bumped by transfers, the Dutchmen will be VERY strong in 2 and 3 years.

and don't get bumped by transfers,

I don't know why you would even bring that issue up because that would never happen at Hope.  :o

Wonder how those Calvin JV hopefulls felt when players like Ricky Shilts, Dan Aultman, Derek Griffin and Jimmy Strunk showed up at Calvin's first practice?

Based on the performance of those names that Sac listed above I would think they were reasonably well recieved by the varsity, and the jv's as well.  To my knowledge GVW, and KVS both are supporters of playing your best players.  Also each of them are vocal about guys "earning" their playing time.  If you enroll at either Hope or Calvin to play ball it strikes me you should be prepared for some strong internal competition.  If your only goal is minutes you could just go to Grace Bible.    :D
Bilk: et al.  Granted Hope seems to have done better over the years garnering MIAA Commissioners Cup's.  That is very nice for Hope.  Job well done.  Enjoy.  Some people think it may be a weakness of the Cup process that it does not take into consideration what happens once the MIAA process ends.   :)
On the other hand Calvin seems to have done much better once the conference season ends (not to mention Calvin's 36 academic all americans since 2000 to Hope's 4).  Calvin is one of only 8 D3 schools that has been in the top 25 schools nationally each year in directors cup competition.
In fact it was just announced that in this current academic year Calvin is in 2nd place after the first round of calculations.
Guess it just depends what you want to use as criteria to determine bragging rights.   :)  Big fish in a small pond or larger fish in a larger pond :).

HHF: welcome to the board. Always glad to have another poster.  Titan Q: thanks for the info on Wessels. I remembered Hoogeboom playing the point for Hope that night, and simply not being able to get the ball up the floor against Wessels. The latter is listed at 6 steals, but I'm guessing he caused more lost balls than that yet. I remember being agog at how disruptive he was. I also was amazed that "he-who-shall-not-be-named" nailed 17 points that night. Oy. I'm also surprised by the attendance number: 2554 at the Civic Center on December 30th? Methinks padding is involved.

HC - I remember that game very well, and the place was pretty full.  I don't doubt that the attendance could be accurate

I was there, I can believe that.  The Championship game of the Russ DeVette always draws really good crowds for late December with no students and Augustana was probably the best finals opponent in a long time.

A belated welcome to Hopehoopfan, that name is similar to another and I missed it.:   For the first time in a while I'm actually looking forward to seeing a Hope JV game........now I just have to figure out where they play. ???  With 6 Sr's there is certainly a need for quality players next season.

Have they played much together so far?

Interesting idea having the two Ty's on the floor together, but neither seems to be much of a point gaurd, this would mean you'd need Carter or VanSolkema on the floor.  With Hope's lack of overall height I can't see how using a 3 gaurd offense would be much of an advantage.  Maybe against another team of equal height deficiency or another 3 gaurd offense.

I would think they won't play much together and there will be an unwritten rule that there must me one "Ty" on the floor at all times.

I think that's right - you'd have to have either DVS or Carter on the floor with them. Personally, I'm not sure Wolfe isn't better suited for a sixth man role rather than a starter. Be that as it may, the three guard idea is an interesting one. If you are going to be hurting for height and rebounding anyway, why not try to run the other team out of the gym? A Loyola Marymount kind of strategy. It might not be a bad way to go. Just an idea. If you have Carter, Tanis, Sharples, Wolfe and MVH or Reimink on the floor at the same time, that's a pretty quick and athletic team. I'm not sure about the defense, but I suspect that is going to be a problem against big teams all year. We'll have a better idea of this after they play Wheaton.

Thanks for the welcoming!  I have moved up from the high school bball blogs on Mlive to where the true sports afficianados hang out!  The JV team should be playing their games at DeVos, either prior to the Varsity or as with the case this Thursday against Glen Oaks by themselves at 8 o'clock. They are 1-4 at this point, but have improved dramatically by playing the likes of CC powerhouses Kalamazoo Valley, Muskegon, Delta and Lake Michigan. Each of the games has been very competitive and the boys were in the position to win 3 out of 4 of them, maybe all 4( I missed Lake Michigan). They are very disciplined and are fortunate to have Coach Elliot at the helm. Look for them to be very impressive as they go through the MIAA season.

As a Calvin fan I like the idea you have of putting 2 Srs. DVS and Klein on the bench and possibly a 3rd, if you play Reimink, and sit MVH.

As a Hornet fan, you look at the potential of the freshman class at Hope and wonder how good the class may be  after adding 2-3 transfers that seem to come like clockwork every few years.  DVS, Osbourn, MVH, Wolfe, Hoogeboom for the one year when Immink was out, and Voison come to mind.

Looking at the situation in the eyes of a Hope freshman, I don't know how happy you would be seeing all the transfers come in.  On one hand you want your team to succeed as much as possible and the addition of talented players really does improve your team and increase your chances of making the NCAAs and winning the MIAA.  On the other hand, even though many of the transfers were originally recruited by the school, your chances of playing significant minutes or maybe even being able to make the varsity roster are signficantly decreased with the extra players.  It does make for better competition but from a recruit or freshman's eyes it might not be such a good thing.
