a garth brooks song is not appropriate right now...

wow, Wheaton almost gives it away and then Calvin gets a layup when they needed 3?  Guess you had to be there.

Wheaton 68 Calvin 67  Final

Still a shock in my opinion

Final:

Wheaton 68
Calvin 67

Thats a real shame.  The Knights talked about circling the WashU game.  Guess they should have circled a few more...

Panner has 25 pts on 7-7 from 3-pt range!

You wouldn't have even known he was on the floor yesterday.  But honestly you had to know Wheaton would play better today.

Not without Wiele. Given the description offered up here last night as to how difficult it was for Wiele to even walk around during halftime warmups, I had a hard time picturing him suiting up today, much less playing. And Wheaton without Wiele is not a team that can hang with Calvin, particularly in Grand Rapids. So what does the kid do? Comes off the bench the next day to post a double-double, setting the CCIW/MIAA Classic single-game rebounding record with 17 caroms.

Hats off to Andy Wiele. And hats off to Wheaton on an amazing 18-hour turnaround.

After watching the last 10 minutes of the Carthage/Hope game--a game that concluded with an amazingly similar finish to the Calvin/Carthage game of last night--I got to watch a disappointing loss to Wheaton. This game was really lost in the first half which Calvin played with little passion. The Thunder got 31 very good minutes from Wiele and Wheaton is a much better team when he is able to play. Wiele didn't start but I didn't notice that he suffered any lingering effects from whatever ailed him last night. Wiele grabbed 17 very necessary rebounds for Wheaton who was outrebounded by the Knights, 37-30.

But the player of the game was Ben Panner who went 7-7 from the arc and scored 25. Wheaton's three point shooting (10-15 as a team) combined with Calvin's poor first half was the difference. I thought Calvin competed pretty well in the post and both Veldhouse and Griffin had solid games but Veltema had a miserable afternoon. He went 1-6 on treys and every one was an open look. Every player has a bad shooting game from time to time but his turnovers (5) are harder to explain. None of them seemed to be forced by Wheaton pressure, they just seemed to be caused by careless decision making.  All in all, a pretty disappointing loss today.

Once again, John Mantel fails to impress.  He often fails to take advantage of his size, and even when he does, he has shown very little touch.  He was nonexistent in Calvin's loss.  He inability to make progress towards his enormous potential is good for Hope and spells trouble for the Knights.

I think you're asking a lot of a first-semester sophomore. It takes time for centers especially to develop.

Consider Don Overbeek, who ended up as an All American:

2000: 6.9 pts per game
2001: 11.5
2002: 14.1
2003: 14.6

John Mantel
2007: 7.2
2008: 12.0 so far

Look at Wheaton's Wiele. He was pretty unimpressive until this year, in which he's a junior.

Mantel's definitely making progress, though it may take a while for him to reach his potential.

Heard today that Calvin's new arena is scheduled to open in January '09.  They will host the annual tip off tourney next season using GR Christian High, then everything is on the road until new years.  The first game in the new arena will be the first league game.
A very disappointing loss today for Calvin at home.  Expectations were very high for the year after a very impressive win two weeks ago against Washington.  However, a team that is going to have a historically great year by Calvin's standards can not lose this game, especially at home.  Regardless of what age certain players are, they have enough big game experience over the last year plus to start striving for excellence.  What I saw this weekend was more of the same.  Just playing to the level of your competition.  You're going to lose more of your share of games playing that way.

differences:

Diesel and Wiele = cut with big muscles
Calvin players = smooth with small muscles

SAC's Tip of the Week  Chapter 2.

There's always a 2nd deer.  Oh Deer!

(No animals were harmed during the realization of this tip, though a human did nearly have a heart attack.)
