Tonight Calvin faces Aquinas again, this time in the Saints' grotto. Aquinas is still undefeated, at 8-0, having defeated both Calvin and Hope. They are just coming off a 90-41 victory vs. Holy Cross. Calvin had a pair of tough games last weekend and could still be tired out. Is there any reason to think tonight's game will come out differently from the game two weeks ago?

For Calvin to win tonight they must:
a. control the boards.  (By more than 1 or 2)
b. avoid turnovers, and especially steals.
c. avoid going to the 3 guard offense.
d. play it's 5 best players (starters)
e. ALL of the above :)

Wow.  I just saw that I now have another star, and have been named "all-conference".  Guess this means 800 must be the magic point to get a promotion to the next level.  Besides the new car, and front row seats at  De Vos what have I won? :D

52-42 AQ 11:37 left

Seems like Lazic gets a lot of rebounds, and he gets a lot of opportunities because it doesn't sound like the Knights are shooting very well.

So where is this AQ team showing up in the NAIA polls? ((EDIT) 22nd in the preseason poll. First in season poll came out today, but I have not found it yet.)

8-0 and beating arguably one of the better teams in NCAA DIII for the second time in a week...

I hope the Dutchmen are ready this weekend!

68-52 AQ leads 3:32 to go.

Highlight of the game:  A sign by AQ students that "Calvin is predestined to lose".
Gosh, is it so obvious that even HC's Catholic friends have it all figured out?  I listed 4 things Calvin needed to do to get a win, and it should have been about 10 things they needed to do.  I guess no matter how long/short the list is they just don't do many of them.
AQ obviously learned something from the HOF game.
1st time AQ has beaten Calvin twice in one year since 1983/84.  Calvin didn't do very well that year.

Thanks NWH: "8-0 and beating arguably one of the better teams in NCAA DIII for the second time in a week..."  Even with my maroon and gold glasses on I am not sure I can give you an 'amen' on that.
Calvin put a great deal of time, effort, and emphasis on beating Wash. U., but since then they have gone 2 of 5.
On paper I still think Calvin has the talent, and ability to be one of the better teams, but on the floor they haven't shown it.

Well since no one posted it.

Aquinas 78 Calvin 62

James Telman of AQ becomes the latest opponent to go nuts from 3 with 6-7 for 28 points.

Madonna 76 Alma 65
(Madonna is now 4-6, wins over San Diego Christian, Kuyper College, and MSU-Northern....thats Montana State Northern.)

MIAA drops to 19-22, not the start to the week I was hoping for.

Well, Realist, you got your wish as John Mantel played 28 minutes tonight.  He had a tough night against Lazic.  Too many times offensively he didn't set his feet when he shot, didn't square up to the basket, and is willing set up where ever the defender wants him.  All the starters played more minutes than usual tonight.  Veltema hasn't shot the ball real well all year, tonight was no exception

Calvin got 17 points from their starting front line tonight.  That just ain't gonna get it done.  That is a very inexperienced front line and Aquinas is a very good team, but they don't seem to be able to dig down deep and get themselves going.

I am impressed with Josh Englesma.  He shows good footwork.  He squared up on Lazic a couple times and scored on him.  Dustin Smith was also solid tonight.

Panner went 7-7 on 3pt FG Sat. night.  Telman went 6-7 tonight.  He had pretty good looks on all of them.

Calvin in the first half was pretty deliberate about trying to get the ball inside.  Once they fell behind by double digits that went away.

Jordan Torres from AQ can play defense.  I like the way Aquinas plays.

Calvin will be a good team when they start to get some consistancy from their frontline.  Until then it could be a struggle.

Thanks, aljr.  I was hoping someone could fill in the blanks on what happened tonight.   I expected it to be a closer game, but thought that maybe Calvin would be "up" for this one and would handle AQ.  I've seen Calvin play this year 4 times, and I just can't put my finger on what's missing.  As someone mentioned last weekend, my best hunch is that maybe it's chemistry???
