Tall, skinny kids from Tri -Unity have gone on to some success. :)
I notice a forward from W. Zeeland, Kingshott.  Is this any relation to the kid at CU now?
Also the Neil from W. Ottawa, does Hope have a lock on this kid?

I believe the Kingshott's are brothers.  Logan Neil is indeed the son of Hope asst. coach Matt Neil (I'll leave it up to you if that's a lock or not).  If you remember games back at the Civic Center, he was the older of the two boys that would shoot around during halftime.  The other one (his younger brother Grant) plays on the West Ottawa JV team.

Is there any chance that 6'-8" Dan Possehl from Tri-Unity Christian goes to an MIAA school or will he end up going somewhere on scholarship?

I think he could be an outstanding MIAA player, especially in maroon and white  ;D

Even better in maroon and gold. ;)

You're correct FDF. I've seen both play and I think Matt is the better hoopster. Matt is a true post player at the small college level but I think Derek might be a player without a position if he played college basketball. I saw Derek play (with Matt) as a sophomore and I thought he was a better player as a 10th grader than he is now as a senior. From the one game I saw Derek play this year he's only a fair high school post player and he doesn't have the shooting or ball handling skills to be an effective wing player at an MIAA school. But he is an excellent athlete and an outstanding football player. I think he's destined to play on the gridiron in college--not basketball.

Oh, come on, Voorhees wasn't that successful.  ;)

Oberlin 62 Alma 57

At tip off there were 64 souls in Cappaert Gymnasium, not counting the 2 teams and the unnecessary "Event Staff" of about a dozen or so.  More trickled in as the game went along, including one Kevin VandeStreak who wandered in around halftime, spent the 2nd half jotting a few notes on legal pad (not many) and left with about 2 minutes to go.

Sure I'd like to say it was a pretty game, but it wasn't, I'm shocked the turnover totals were so low in the boxscore, perhaps that button wasn't working on the stats program.  The shooting was dreadfull at times (see Alma 2nd half), and I would say an awful lot of shots were uncontested.

What often happens when you put two teams of equal talent and ability on the floor is you end up with a very close competitive ballgame.  Both teams played with a great deal of enthusiasm and desire to win, I give them the credit there.   The benches were really into the game on both sides. Oberlin was just as excited to win as Alma was down after the loss.

I really think the game turned at the end of the first half when Alma was leading by 9 and had just gone on a long 23-8 run to lead 35-26, then Oberlin hits a 3 at the buzzer to cut it to 6.  At the start of the 2nd, Alma missed their first seven shots, while Oberlin made a couple and just 3 minutes into the half it was tied.  All the momentum had swung to Oberlin, from that point on the Yeoman seemed to have a little more energy, a little more desire.

With about 8 minutes to go it was a 1 point game, in crunch time the Yeoman had the more fluid offense, and I see at least 5 different players scored down the stretch while Alma seemed to be really trying to get the ball in only 1 or 2 guys hands.

Fittingly Oberlin missed a bunch of FT's while Alma missed a bunch of 3's in the late stages.  It lacked drama but the Yeoman did enough to get the W.

Interesting game, I think Alma really missed Sam Machuta their 6-8 (ish) center who was in street clothes for no visible reason.  It would have been fun to see him bang in the paint with Gian Chiu, the 6-9(ish) center for Oberlin.  Neither team seemed to be to interested in banging the ball down low, although everything was either a 3 or a layup as far as I can recall.

Competitive game, interesting Friday evening I guess. ;)

I saw Trinity play Devenport about a month ago, and don't expect a close game tomorrow with Calvin vs them.

Trinity did not look good.  They played hard, but they just don't have much talent at all.

...Speaking of Davenport, they looked very impressive and are off to a nice start.  I don't even think they have any Seniors at all either.  Nice to see another West Michigan college building a solid basketball program.

Few notes

----The days of a quiet calm Alma bench are over, Terry Smith is all over the place and really into the ball game.  I think he sat only 2 or 3 times.  Get ready for substitutions galore, some that seem to be completely haphazzard and without purpose.   But I'll give him the benefit of the doubt since I'm quite certain he knows his guys better than I.  Basically if anything negative happens (foul, turnover, missed shot, opponent score) and its your fault, your coming out of the games.   Alma made almost as many substitutions tonight (84) as there were people officially in attendance. :o  Pretty sure everyone played for the Scots

----Alma also pressed alot, esp in the first half.  It will be interesting to see if Alma tries this against Hope, Calvin and Albion........that might be a disaster waiting to happen.  Bottom line is you'll see more enthusiasm, and a little different x's and o's from Alma this year.  But the Scots are going to take some lumps this year and some could be ugly.  They are young and certainly lack the talent of the Hope's and Calvin's but they won't lose because they won't try, that I'll garuntee you.  I hate to say it because it sounds mean, but I didn't see a single player who could make the varsity at Hope, Calvin or Albion (maybe 1 from Oberlin might get a look).

----I've got Adrian tabbed for #4 in the league right now, they beat Oberlin 85-54........its going to be a long season for Alma.

sac

Albion 107, Marygrove 44

crimony, did the starters even break a sweat for Albion?  11, 18, 18, 19, 9.........75 totals minutes for the Brit starters.

IU Southeast 69, Kalamazoo 61 .........had that one penciled in as a Kzo win, McCain did play and well.

MIAA now 22-28........looking more and more like a 4 team race.

PicknRoll

Yeah as sac noted the hornets lost their side of the opener for the Marian tournament. I have no clue how good their oponent was, but it looked like a semi-close game from the box score. Tied 31-31 at halftime and then lost by 8. Additionally as Sac noted, McCain must have been back on the floor in good form. He shot 9-13, which from the box score, was one of the few positives of the game. I also would like to note that Jerome, the starting PG, had a good ratio of 6 assists and 1 turnover. He has been playing well for the Hornets, filling his role as the point gaurd. The few games of theirs I caught this year he seemed to know he was in their to facilitate and take his opportunities when he is open. I hope that his good decision making continues. The Hornets have been plagued this year with a lot of turnovers and not many assists (13 assists to 20 turnovers last night). Without looking at the exact stats, I can't imagine their assist to turnover ratio is higher than .75, which is just one of the indicators why they are off to the start they are.

I am still curious on why McCain didn't play against Northwood and then didn't start tonight. Possibly he was ill and unable to practice?

The Hornets play Davenport tonight. As some previous discussion noted, Davenport is on the up this year. I know that for the past few years it seemed when the hornets played Davenport the games turned into a blowout for the hornets. It sure would be nice to get a win like that for the sake of the guys confidence. No matter what though when conference play starts everyone is 0-0.

Looks like Alma is after as good of coaches as they can find.  They made a huge upgrade in XC and track when they added Gordon Aldrich this past summer.  Adrian could learn a thing or two from Alma on how to hire.

Technical  question.  Has anyone else had to reset their password several times in the last week?

FDF, and OK:  Thanks for the information on the Kingshotts.  I assumed they were brothers, but happy you confirmed that.
FDF:  Yes, I do remember those boys (Neil) shooting around as you mention.  I am going to go out on a limb here, and guess a solid lock. :D

Knight In The Stan

happy holidays- its been quite some time for me and i apologize. sounds like the knights have stumbled as of late. i just watched the carthage game and they seem to lack the "thirst for blood" mentality when it comes to winning. i really wish that they would have the attitude to go out to beat everybody by 50. seems to be working for hope. if someone could give me and update on the calvin game that would be stellar. i hope everyone is enjoying the firey start to the miaa season.
