Hope 96 MVN 77 final

scottiedawg

It's a tradeoff for sure:
VanSolkema averages 2.4 more turnovers per 40 min than Kelvin Carter
VanSolkema averages 0.4 more assists per 40 min than Kelvin Carter
but
VanSolkema averages 9.4 more points per 40 min than Kelvin Carter

Carter protects the ball, but is definitely not the scoring threat (yet) that VanSolkema is.

HOPE 96 Mt. Vernon Nazarene 77

Final margin matches the largest margin.  Shooting seemed to cool off in the second half, particularly for MVNU.  It was a 6 point game with about 10 to go, Hope was able to slowly pull away...........the final blow was a 18-6 run to close the game while MVNU was stuck on 71 points for about 4 minutes.

Klein 20, VanderHeide 17, Reimink 15, VanSolkema 12

for MVNU Falkenberg 22, Borcherdt 20, Conner 18

I guess if you want to point to a couple things key to victory, you start with Hope's advantage from its starting frontline with 52-22 advantage, you can point to the bench with a 26-13 advantage.  Marcus VanderHeide had a very nice second half.

Maybe the biggest disappointment has to be the 3point shooting from the gaurds, just 3-15 collectively.  The big guys picked up the slack going 6-11.

Overall a very good win over an unbeaten MVNU squad.

Gameball goes to Ryan Klein, with a career high 20 (I believe?) and named tournament MVP.

Not a great game for Calvin today.  I really thought they would do better in NJ.  This is why I backed off in the pick contest, and see them struggling some early in the MIAA.
Great win for Hope.  IMHO, and fwiw I think the results at the end today tie directly back to the Elmhurst game.  I know that was a tough loss for the Dutch, but Hope sure proved today they can protect a lead, and they didn't collapse down the stretch.   Hope fans just have to have a little more faith in your coach, and the players.  They learned the lesson rather well. :) At this point they have to be the odds on favorite to win the MIAA.

Tri-State 66 Loras 65........Benford goes for 30

Big win for the Thunder, Loras had beaten UWLacrosse, Chicago and lost to Wheaton by 7.  Loras had won its last 7 games prior to tonight.  They'll likely meet a pretty good Defiance team tommorrow night.

Some thoughts from the game:

*  First of all, it was ***GREAT*** to see retired Coach Russ DeVette. Aided by a walker, I thought he looked great! Here's HOPEing that things continue to go well for Coach DeVette and his health recovery.

*  What was with the black socks wore by the Mt V team?

*  Mt. V's 13 turnovers for the first half and 19 total were no doubt a part of their struggle with the game. Was it the enviroment? Was it Hope's D? Was it....?  Not sure.  But it just seemed like an obvious factor in the first half of the game.

*  At 3:07 left in the first half all of the judges scores were "10's" for Ty Tanis as he threw his body on the floor to save the ball. GREAT EFFORT TY!

*  #45 for Mt. V was definitely NOT going for the "Mr. Congeniality" award during the game!!!!  A couple of opportunities to help a player up and then a warning from the officials on an inbound play. Must have gotten coal in his stocking and he just wasn't a happy camper.

*  Another stat to look at: Ty Tanis 1 for 6 and 1 for 5 (3's) and 5 for 6 (FT's).  On defense he still is looking good, but like the weather, has been a bit chilly lately. Keep on pluggin Ty, it will come!

*  Another stat to look at: Ryan Klein 8 for 12, 3 for 4 (3's), 1 for 2 (FT's), and 6 Rebounds. Congratulations to Ryan on a good game and good weekend and being honored for the MVP of the Tournament!

*  Mt. V had a very good, solid team. Their depth may keep them out of some games later in the season, as some of the players who played many minutes of the game showed some tiredness late in the game.  Too bad they didn't have a better following to help cheer on their team.

*  Marcus Vanderheide - A true spark plug - scoring the first 5 and 6 (I think!) points in beginning of the game and the start of the 2nd half for Hope. He came out focused and ready to play! If only those nasty fouls wouldn't have been called!!!

*  Hope gave Mt. V the baseline WAY TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!  Goal for 2008: NO BASELINE FOR OPPONENTS!

*  Kudos to the Hope guys for playing the entire game. They came to play and definetely learned something from their trip to Florida.

*  Nice crowd, but it sure was quiet!  WE WANT THE DEW CREW BACK!!!!

*  Nice to see DotheDew at the game!!!  SAC - we missed you!  HOPE all is well!

Ohio Wesleyan 67 Albion 59

Brits got it down to 2 points a couple of times in the last couple minutes but OWU hit clutch shots and FT's to seal the game.  Margin floated around 8 points most of the times I tuned in.

3035 for a Holiday tournament with no students is awesome, but you wouldn't have known it listening to the radio.  >:(

speaking of the radio, nice interview with Stephen Cramer at halftime, he mentioned his desire to come back to Holland this summer and try and play for the Holland Blast.

I've been sick all week, and hoped I'd be well enough to try to go today.  If I were in Holland still, no problem.

I really wanted to see this game since they scheduled it last summer, but sometimes your body just tells you to rest.

I don't know.. from our side of the stadium, it was more lively than usual.  A couple of vivid moments -- there was actual clapping (gasp!) from the older folks in the section next to us.  And I mean almost all of them!  And not just politely during introductions, this was in the heat of a key moment in the game.  This is unheard of most games!  And then, when the refs missed a traveling call, 70% of that same section could be found making the hand signal.  Even a very lovely 80ish year old woman!  I've never seen any thing like it, LOL!  I was pretty impressed.   :D  No, it wasn't Dew Crew noisy, but it wasn't as ghastly pitiful as usual from where I sat.   ;D

Missed you, Sac.  Get better!

I definitely agree with realist that Hope learned from the Elmhurst game, and showed they can score in crunch time against a good team.  Great confidence boost to win a game like that before a lay-off.

Good crowd, better support than ususal with no students around.

Hope has been pretty balanced this year:

5 starters now averaging between 10.2 and 12.2 points per game
3 starters over 4.5 rebounds per game
3 starters over 2 assist per game
4 starters with over 1.7 steals per game.

With that kind of balance, we may never see a Hope player as MIAA player of the week - but that's just fine with me.  It also means that any one of the starters can go off in any game.

A good win for the Dutchmen yesterday over a MVNU that really shoots the ball well. It was an entertaining game, I thought, and the final score doesn't indicate the defensive effort put in by both teams. Hope has a few defense problems to work on, it seems to me, particularly when the freshmen are in the game as their rotation is not as sharp. One of them was getting beaten off the dribble pretty consistently and then not rotating over - I saw Marcus get in his ear at one point. It was especially good to see Marcus pound the ball inside. His spin move early in the game was a thing of beauty. Hope is simply a much better team when he is on the inside, especially if Klein is hitting his 3's and pulling the opposition big men out of the paint. There aren't too many 3's or 4's who are going to match up well with Marcus underneath. When he plays as aggressively as he did yesterday, Hope is tough to beat.

Any Calvin posters listen to or see yesterday's game? I'm curious as to what is happening.

HC:  From what I heard, and have read in the SIDs daily report Calvin just wasn't focused.  KVS has spoken about, and vented his frustration about lack of intesity, and focus.  He also commented about using multiple combinations in an attempt to get the team to gell.   All the switching hasn't helped, and my (simple) advice would be to put the 5 best guys as starters, and have them play 30+ minutes each (W or L the constant changing strikes me as counterproductive).  It is great to have depth, but the bench has to contribute when they are getting minutes.  Unless things improve vastly over the next 10 days it is going to be a very long season for Calvin.  Perhaps the Knights will manage to gell just in time to give Hope a decent rivalry game. ;)

Defiance 99 Trine 61........just when you think you've got the Thunder figured...??

The league stands at 32-42 with just 4 non conference games remaining.  Last season the league was 27-51 on this date, so far a marginal improvement.  Its not great, but its better than going backwards.  The MIAA might still be a couple years away from a .500 or better record.

Difference in the win column from last season
Albion +4
Adrian +4
Calvin 0
Hope 0
Kzoo 0
Alma -1
Olivet -1
Trine -3
