oldknight, excellent summary of the Knight's season so far.  It appears Calvin will have to win the conference tourney most likely to get into the big tourney, which is common for just about every d3 team.  Regular season league championships are still a great accomplishment, and I hope Calvin can will be in contention for it during the second Calvin-Hope game.  To do that, they will have to hit their peak much earlier than last season.  I feel a big win over Hope on the 26th this month could give them a HUGE boost of momentum.

Calvin doesn't play again for another week, so I guess that's 7 days where I can take time off of ranting about Calvin's questionable offensive strategies and game-plan  :D

Last year, Calvin lost their five games by a combined total of 79 points. Their closest loss was to UW-La Crosse by 10 but I was at that game and believe me, it wasn't that close. The Knights got whacked pretty good in that game as they did in their other four losses last year. This year, Calvin's five losses have been by a total of 28 points and only the second Aquinas loss (by 16) wasn't really close. The other four losses have been close, winnable games. So just by that measurement that's progress (of sorts).

I will limit my Calvin thoughts to this point for now. (I too would not be at all surprised to see Calvin turn things around like last year and just romp through the conference season but I have less faith they'll do that than I did last year.)

As oldknight noted Calvin's 5 losses last year were by 79 points. The opponents were Hope, Wheaton, Carthage, UW-LaCrosse, and Wooster.  A really impressive and difficult non-conference group of foes. I don't think this year's losses are as impressive. Aquinas twice (good losses not great), Wheaton, Keene St, and Montclair St. I think the last two programs are good but not great.

More importantly to me is that other than the Wash U win is that three of Calvin's wins were Cornerstone, Grace, and Trinity. Last year they only counted Cornerstone as one of their 5 wins. I just don't know what to think of this team.

It's great... to be... a Michigan Wolverine!

The best short summary I heard about yesterdays game is it's like when you dump the girl you don't want anymore and then the next day she looks hotter than ever. Boy, if that team had showed up more often in recent history, none of us would have been so happy to see Lloyd go, but it was excellent for he and the seniors to finally go out that way.

And just so I stay on a D3 topic: Convert, probably should hang onto the Hope banner. We all know we need as many as we can get.

While I cringe at defending an old foe, and while I realize that this formula doesn't hold up well...

Elmhurst>Hope>Roanoke>Defiance>UWO, who beat Elmhurst on the 28th of November.

Is Defiance showing up on any poll radar? 3 of their 4 losses came at the hands of vote getters, and 2 of those losses were by a total of 3 points. And now a win over the 13th ranked team, who only a week ago received one of the #1 votes.

Just wondering???

Hope down 1 in the poll to #9
Calvin drops out
Albion get no votes with a couple losses

And indeed Defiance gets 4 votes...  8)

Great article in the Sentinel today on Stephen Cramer's experience playing professionally in Germany.  It was also great to be able to talk to him for a bit at the Russ DeVette tournament last week.

Wow! It's been weeks since I've been able to sign in.  for some reason it worked today.  Is someone ambitious enough to figure out the point differential between the starting 5 for Hope, and anytime there are 2 or more freshman on the floor?

Is there anyone in-the-know close to the Knights who can relay to us that the team members simply do not get along on/off the court.  I am tired of hearing about an ankle injury 7 weeks old that is holding a team back.  Either sit during the pre-season and heal, invest more time in rehab, or suck it up.  Maybe they're sandbagging!! Veltema's confidence crushed, or do teams simply force him to put it on the floor or contest everything?

Does anyone know why frosh Sutton from Adrian played a combined 0 minutes in last weekends tourney?

I have only heard good things on how well the players get along off the court.

I don't think anyone is blaming Calvin's struggles on one ankle injury, but it may be part of the reason Griffin struggling.

Veltema has just got to keep shooting.

It's still early in the season.

Mt St. Joseph 74 Adrian 72

MSJ is credited with a steal with :04 remaining to deny the Bulldogs a chance to tie.  Adrian led by 15 points with 9:11 to play and scored just 10 points the rest of the way.

Desmond Young 28, Cardenas and Gallus with 16 and 15.......or 15 and 16.

The Hornets have a great opportunity for two more wins starting tomorrow at Marygrove.  They guys got back on Monday from break with a strong 2 a day practice session.   They need to be mentally strong and just go into Detroit and take care of business.

They open the MIAA up at Alma on Wednesday. This could be seen as a toss-up, but I think the Hornets should be favorites.

There's no reason they shouldn't be on a 4 game win streak going into the 12th at home against Albion

It looks like GVW's 600th win will be at Olivet on the 12th.  They could have a record crowd that day.

You mean they might pull all the bleachers out?

I'll see if I can pull some strings and get everyone tickets for the historic day.

That would be great.  Could you please also include some personal air conditioning and night vision goggles?
