No matter how bad your team may have struggled in the non conference, everybody starts 0-0 tonight.  Just thought I'd remind everyone of that  ;)

Calvin-Hope womens game should be good, which tips off in a few hours.

Hey everyone!  It might be league opening night, but it's also a red letter day here in MIAAville.

Today is Sac's, and FDF's, and gohope's birthday!   ;D  Be sure and wish them well, regardless of your team's outcome tonight!

Have fun everyone!

Herzlichen Geburztag, or something like that! ;D ;D

Recent transfer from GVSU Chris Nelis (spelling?) of Zeeland played tonight for the Hope JV.  Boy did he look good, dropping in 16 points and at least 10 rebounds.  We may see him on varsity in coming years.

Marcus Vanderheide started the game off right; in the pregame huddle with the Dew Crew:
"We love it when you guys [the Dew Crew] pee your pants because everyone else can see it, and we [the team] get to feel the warmth!!

As for the game, Albion plays physical, scrappy defense, and because of a paucity of foul calls in the first half, Hope's offense was limited greatly.  But our defense held strong, and in the face of extreme physicality that went uncalled, Hope, for the most part, kept their composure, and went on the crush Albion in the last ten minutes of the game.  We're superior, and it finally came out.  No stars or goats tonight, this was a team effort, and a great way to begin conference play.

Halftime score
Hope 18
Albion 16

Final Score
Hope 64
Albion 49

And this was two halves that were like totally different games.  According to the official CM stats at the half, Hope had 6 field goals, 6 free throws, and 19 rebounds.  She normally tracks turnovers, but in fear of running out of ink, she didn't.   My best guess is that  both teams had more turnovers than points in the first half - a lot of it due to the defense, but also both teams looked stiff and just out of it.

The second half had much better shooting, with the Hope defense at the same level as the first half, while the Britons defense slipped a bit.

Scary moment in the second half, when an Albion player fell out of bounds after launching a 3 and landed right on Coach Turner.  It appeared he hit his head and injured his leg.  After the game, he was walking on crutches and had his leg wrapped and iced.

Quite a bizarre game with that first half score. It actually did turn out that the first team to 50 won. It was surprising to actually see Hope pull away to a large lead in the last several minutes, it didn't look like either team would ever make it to a double digit lead. It got really chippy out there too, I was quite surprised that no one (at least no one wearing sneakers) got carried off the floor. It was well into the second half before we saw a Hope 3, has there been a Hope game in recent history to be 3-pointer free?

The defenses were certainly quite dominant in the first half, though the score overplays that point a bit as it seemed both sides had as bad of luck as could possibly be had with shots going down. As aggressive as the defenses were, it was also no surprise that there was plenty of questioning of the officiating. I definitely did not agree with all the calls, but did anyone else notice the one ref who had the least hair actually turn to a certain mouthy fan and tell him to "keep talking, pal" while making the flapping-jaw hand motion? There are certainly fans who the refs could deservedly chastise, but that seemed like a surprisingly silly/cocky move by an official who is supposed to be keeping control.

At Calvin everbody looked a little rusty.  To long of a Christmas break.  Four players with 11 points, Smith,Griffin, Veltema, and Mantel.  Time to work on some more offensive sets.  More than pass the ball between the three point line and the mid court line then try for a fast shot. Defense did hold Bedford to 6 points.

Calvin over Tri-State 56-48.  It was ugly.

Calvin played well the first half.  New starting 5 tonight: Smith and Engelsma in and Kaat and Veltema out.  They had good ball movement the first half and Veltema came off the bench to score 11 points.  Dustin Smith had a good first half also.  Calvin did give up 5 offensive  rebounds to Andre Patrick the first half which resulted in 6-8 easy points. Calvin had good offensive movement and even hit cutters in the lane for easy shots.

Calvin did not play as well the second half.  They didn't match TSU's intensity to start the 2nd half.  They didn't move the ball like they did the first half.  They had a really bad stretch of turnovers at about the 8 minute mark when it was 45-41.  TSU missed 2 layups after steals that could have tied it up with about 7 minutes to go.  Calvin only scored 9 points the first 13 minutes of the half.

Veldhouse played very good defense on Benford tonight. Benford only had 6 points on 3-14 shooting but Caleb's offense suffered because he only had 4 points on 1-10 shooting.

Does anybody know where Schuster was tonight?
