Halftime

Calvin 40

Adrian 25

Doug Wentworth says that "this is the best first half of basketball Calvin has played all year, and that he is impressed."  Hope the Knights can repeat their performance for the second half.

The games not over yet but right now Hope is 18-19 from the FT line. I can't remember the last time Hope shot free throws that well. Hopes' FT shooting has always been something that perplexed me. Hope has had so many great jump shooters and fundamentally sound players yet there FT shooting has never been where I would want it. Granted I think they should be at 80%+ as a team.

As I wrote this Bowser missed the first FT of the game for Hope after 18 straight! ;D

Hope the Knights can repeat their performance for the second half.

There's an oxymoron if there ever was one. ::)

Wentworth just seemed stunned that Griffin just fouled someone on a 3-point shot with 30 seconds left with a 10 point lead.

Calvin up by 8 with 30 seconds.  The hay is in the barn.

Knights beat Adrian 79-67. Nice win for the Knights in a place where they haven't played all that well in recent years. Calvin apparently couldn't duplicate their excellent first half and the Bulldogs closed to 56-51 before the Knights scored 8 straight to resume control. Calvin shot well from the arc hitting 10-21  and Veldhouse scored 26 on the strength of 4 of 6 from three point land. Desmond Young had 18, and Cardenas and Gallus both had 17 for Adrian. I remember Cardenas as a freshmen last year and I liked him a lot. He's an excellent point guard.

Flying Dutch Fan

Great all around game by the Dutchmen.  They shot 52.6% from the field, only 33% from three,  but 84% from the FT line (21-15).  Add that to out rebounding the Hornets by 14, and having 20 assists to 15 turnovers, and you get a nice win.  Great balance in scoring as well:

Starters
Marcus VH  16
Derek VS 13
Tyler Wolfe 12
Jesse R 11
Ryan K 8

Off the bench
Will Bowser 9
and Dan Holt with 9 and 5 boards in the last 5 minutes

Hope played one of its best games in a while, with a dominating 88-60 win. Hope got it started quickly draining several three balls to take a quick 15-5 and never looked back. The game would never go back into single digits from that point on. Marcus Vanderheide played a tremendous game both offensively and defensively. He absolutely shut down McCain who only scored 6 points the entire game. Kalamazoo could not get anything going the entire game either offensively or defensively.

Everybody played well for the Dutchman, with maybe the exceptions of Carter and Tanis, as they were able to go deep into their bench early in this contest. Dan Holt had a solid performance with 9 points in spite of only 2-6 free throw shooting.

Good win for the Dutchmen today and finally looked the part of the number 6 team in the country. Congrats coach Van Wieren on win 601 and lets get Adrian on Saturday.
Its a great day to be a Dutchman!

Final Score

Calvin 79

Adrian 67

Nice to see Calvin get a solid road win against a team that beat Calvin last year at Adrian.

Veldhouse finishes with 26 points and 5 assists.

Young leads the way for Adrian with 18 points.

Calvin commits 13 turnovers but forces 17.

KVS seems pretty happy with the performance tonight, although he was disappointed at the turnovers and the defense in the second half.  He said they played hard all night.  Also said Veldhouse has been sick a little these past few games, but gutted it out to play an excellent game.

Looking forward to Calvin playing another quality opponent, Albion, on Saturday night at Knollcrest.  Hopefully tonight was a nice momentum booster to carry them into the game, Saturday.

Other scores

Tri-State defeats Alma 60-58.

Albion defeats Olivet 70-58.

Calvin and Hope are tied for first.

I went to the dick tonight to watch what I hoped would be a competitive game. Hoped jumped on Kazoo early and the Hornets never responded.  I thought Kalamazoo would be tough and getting right up into Hope's faces but that never happened.  Hope had 5 3's in the first 4 minutes and only got 2 more DVS 3's late in the 2nd half.  Hope played well and MVH was rock solid.  Not a lot for the crowd to get excited about tonight.

#34, Nate Orozco, did have a great throw down on somebody from Hope in the 2nd half.

Supporting the best football program in the country is worth the agony of some hardwood horror

The new coach has got to get this WVU stuff behind him now.  This is not reflecting well on the Maize & Blue.

MVH seems to be able to do whatever he wants on any night...score, rebound, pass, defend...great all around player, maybe the most complete player in the league since DePree.  Great win for the Knights tonight on the road, we need to start pounding people on the glass though.  Nice night for some of the bench guys too.  Need that depth to play in March.

From tonight's game, wooden shoe like to hear some highlights:

*  First, a question, does anyone know why K-College doesn't have their basketball games on the local radio station any more?

*  Next, CONGRATULATIONS once again to Coach Passage on the birth of Owen David Passage who was born on Sunday, January 13th!  That's GREAT!

*  First half, it just seemed that Hope had an answer for the many things that K was trying to do, both offensively and defensively. When Hope shot from the outside, it brought the K defenders out, which then let the Hope players go inside. K's air was let out, and there was just a lot of frustration for the Hornets.

*  The beginning of the second half was almost a repeat of Olivet game for Hope. But... Hope pulled it together much quicker and then add to that the fact that some of the key Hornet players got into foul trouble. For example, within the first three minutes of the second half, Mat Kellogg got three quick fouls, along with his other foul from the first half, and bam, he was sitting most of the second half.

*  Basically I would like to "Xerox" this game for the Dutchmen. Overall they played very well, balanced, team focused and their desire and drive to get a "W" was just a lot of fun to watch.

*  4 out of the 5 Hope starters were in double digits. All players played and all but two players scored. Dan Holt tied his career high and once again the unselfishness of players to pass off to another player for the score was good to see.

*  Before the beginning of the game, President Bultman publically honored Coach VanWieren (although he paused for a moment asking whether or not "Stinger" was in the house so that he could savor this moment too) to acknowledge his 600th victory. And President Bultman made mention that Coach VanWieren was probably more concerned at this time for his 601st win!  But the chorus of "601!" "601!" from the Dew Crew at the end of the game was something for all of us to enjoy!

Hope 88 Kzoo 60

I've had a long day, pretty tired, and to be honest most of you have covered all that needs to be written about this one.  But I'll add just a few notes.

----All you need to know about this one can probably be summed up one way.  Hope starters 60 Kzoo starters 24.........and that was the ballgame.  Hope just grabbed this one by the throat, it was probably the 601st time Hope's jumped all over somebody from the tip.

-----Stinger said Kzoo probably needed to play a perfect game and stay out of foul trouble, they lost Matt Wagner about 10 minutes in  to an ankle sprain, and then Pat Clancey picked up his 2nd and 3rd fouls at the 6 minutes mark and he was never the same after that.  On top of that they picked up a first half technical and then early in the second, Mat Kellogg picked up his 2nd, 3rd and 4th fouls and 17:32, 17:27 and 17:04......any chances at a run were gone after that.  Kzoo lost its composure a couple times, it didn't cost them the game but it sure didn't help them keep their heads in the game.  I'm sure they played some combo's of kids they didn't expect.

-----Despite the score, I think Kzoo is a pretty good team, but they can't play like they did tonight and expect to win, esp not on the road.  They've got a nice offense with good motion and spacing, and look to poach a few here and there on the break when defenses get lazy.  Some good looking shooters too. It can't be overstated what a great job Hope did on McCain, he had no space tonight and that took away a good part of Kzoo plan.  Defensively though, the Hornets just weren't in it and didn't challenge much of what Hope offered.  Hope shot just over 50% but it was 68% from inside the arc before the final couple insignificant misses.

-----Thank you Will Bowser for the best Dan Holt impersonation to date.  ;) :D

-----speaking of Dan, he had an excellent game at the end with 9 points, 5 rebounds.  I felt bad when he missed the 2 FT's at the end to miss out on double digits, but overall you just have to feel good about someone who tries so hard.  If there was any doubt what Hope worked on Monday and Tuesday in practice, all you had to do was watch the last 5 guys on the bench operate the offense.  Pretty sharp actually.

-----JV roundup  Cox had 22, Boersma 18 on 6 of 8 from 3 we think, and Keyser with a solid 11.  I think the JV's won by about a dozen and led by 15 most of the way.
