The jv schedule at Calvin.edu is showing a 11:30 a.m. start for the jv game.
Not sure on exact time for doors, but would guess approx. 11 a.m.

Some of my favorite Hope/Calvin memories involve games most of the Hope/Calvin community knows very little about, if anything.

For 4 years, Harderwyk CRC in Holland hosted a Hope/Calvin alumni (sort of...guys and girls who had ties to our church and Hope or Calvin) game after the "real" Saturday Hope/Calvin game.  The series ended tied 2 games apiece (imagine that).  In the first game our pastor, a Hope grad, severed his achilles tendon in a freak incident in the first half.  Hope won that one (for the gimper  :D ).

The next year, the Calvin faithful recruited a couple ringers--Steve Honderd and someone who I'll just call Fred (don't remember his name).  Riding the backs of their ringers, Calvin won that year.  However, I fondly remember sinking a trey over Honderd, and basically shutting down Fred in the post.  (I never played on a team in middle school thru college, so any small acomplishment against former Calvin players is that much bigger for me.)

The third year brought another Hope win.  Strangely, there's not much I can remember from that game, other than a few nice fast braks from a couple of kids who were freshmen at Hope.  But the fact that it was a Hope win was enough for me.  ;D

The fourth and last year tied the series with a Calvin win.  It wasn't fun losing, of course, but I do have a couple fond memories anyway.  In one Calvin posession, I found myself firmly planted with a Calvin student driving toward me with the ball.  In the next few seconds, I came to the realization that I need to hone my skills for taking a charge.  With the ref signaling a blocking foul, and the Calvin player sprawled out on his back in front of me, it dawned on me that one should supress the instinctive reaction to defend one's self.  Rather than leave my arms crossed and held flat against my chest, at the moment of contact, I raised my elbows out in front of me, leveling my charging opponent.  OOPS!   :-[  (Sorry Sam!)

The other memory from that fourth game is not embarassing but more incredible.  Kyle Bloemers, one of the original Dew Crew and also a former 3 Man, turned his ankle pretty hard midway thru the first half.  During halftime it started to swell quite a bit.  So he decided the only way he would be able to continue to play was to keep moving and stay in the game as long as the ankle would hold out.  He finished the game, playing the entire second half.  I don't remember exactly how many 3's he sank in that game, but it was either 10 or 12.  I do remember that it was more than the Hope individual record at the time.  The next time I saw him he had his whole lower leg and foot in a cast--he had broken his ankle when he twisted it in the first half.  Incredible 3-point shooting performance...on a broken ankle!

Awesome

I can tell you from my experience in Modern Lit. oh so many years ago, that the minutes DO go by quicker if you count them.  Especially if you write them in the margin of your notebook.   :D

I still believe they could make a mint for charity with a Hope/Calvin alumni game.

Has anyone tried organizing one? Guess you wouldn't require institutional support to pull that off.

That's what those 4 games were supposed to be for...to raise money for the Cadets.  But we quit after 4 years because the only people showing up were family members of either the players or the Cadets.  We didn't really raise any money from outside the donor base already established.  And let's face it--who really wants to pay money to see us old hacks and never-beens limp up and down the court anyway?

However, if anyone actually thinks sac's idea could turn into something, count me in on the organizing team.

I like the idea of Hope people organizing it. My guess is that Winkle's and Honderd's invitations will mysteriously be lost, and Cramer will find some plane tickets in his mail.

That said - it's a great idea. I'd pay to go, and my guess is that you'd get a heck of a crowd.

On Jan. 17, 1998  Hope's  Dave Meuhlenberg scored 36 points on 13-14 shooting from the floor and 10-14 from the line, pulled down 9 rebounds in 41 minutes of playing time.......oh and didn't commit a single turnover.  Hope won the game 87-85 in overtime.

Also from that game, Joel Holstege had 10 assists to go with his 13 points.  Calvin's Sam Hargraves was 8-12 from 3 point range scoring 26 points.  The rest of the players in the game were 5-26 combined.  Aaron Winkle had 14, Rob Velthouse 14, Russ Iwema 11

Those 2 (Dave & Joel) graduated from Covenant Christian & now Josh Engelsma (Covenant) plays for Calvin.  Does that mean he'll excel in the Calvin/Hope games?  Possibly?  I'd look for him to be a threat.
Also I strongly believe that Derek Griffin will come out like no other and play amazing tomorrow.  He tends to do pretty well against Hope.

Speaking of players that have played big in the Rivalry. DVS was huge in the first 3 games last year, scoring 21, 23 and 18. The last two games he only had 2 and 7. (Granted in both of those games Cramer was playing as a man possessed too so that helped compensate, particularly in the NCAA). But I think Hope really needs a solid game from DVS. Maybe not 23 points but a solid effort on both ends of the floor.

I still can't believe Hope and Calvin met 5 times last year. Wow, that was like a year of stress on my life.

Olivet reducing tuition for commuter students.  Pretty interesting concept.  The High School's involved have one glaring omission and is probably just another example of why so many kids from 15 miles away never knew they had a college. :-\
