last Sat. we saw a Hope team have a subpar performance (for them), and still manage to win.   :)

You're kidding, right?  :-\ I thought Hope was terrific, especially in the second half (17 of 28 from the floor). GVW thought so too. I don't remember his exact words but in his postgame comments he essentially said that Hope played as well as they had in any game this season--and that they needed to in order to win.

I would say Hope did not have its best team game on Saturday and is capable of a more balanced game. I think if they do that they are better than they were on Saturday (just a little better).

Playing Mad Libs lately, DCHN?   :D

I don't know if Hope's game on Saturday would be sub-par as in below average expectations, but their defense was not very strong for a good part of the first half and their free-throw shooting was of course awful. I don't know the 3-point stats, but it seemed that Wolfe was the only consistent threat, so I'm guessing their total 3-point percentage was pretty low for them as well. Of course they also got a couple amazing individual performances, so it's hard to say if that qualified as an average performance or better. They certainly have had at least some overall better performances though.

I know this only addresses the 3-point stats, but here goes:

3-Pt. FG% 1st Half:  2-12 16.7%   2nd Half:  6-12 50.0%   Game: 33.3%

Wolfe 6-10 60%; DVS 2-6 33.3%

Kind of goes without saying that Wolfe had a better than average game.  His numbers improved to 25 of 60 for 41.7%.  Had DVS made one and missed one more 3 he would have been about at his current average: 36 of 91 for 39.6%.  As a team, Hope is now at 35.6%.  They didn't shoot quite as well from 3 as a team--they went into the game at 35.8%.  But lagging by 2.5% and drawing the season average down by .2% is pretty minimal.  If they had taken and made one more (9-25) they would have been slightly ahead.

Given their current W-L record, is winning the MIAA tournament the only way Calvin is going to make the national tournament?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it is.  Looks like Calvin is going to be in the same situation last year, where they have to get into the big tourney by beating Hope at their place.  Hopefully Calvin can hold the number 2 spot, though, so they wouldn't have to face Hope till the finals.

Calvin is 9-7 overall but for NCAA purposes they are 4-3 in-region.  Should Calvin win out in MIAA play that makes them 12-3, two wins in the MIAA tournament and losing the title game puts them at 14-4.

It would all depend and where they are ranked within the region, when or if their name comes up for a Pool C bid.   That ranking would depend on what other teams won their conferences and who won the MIAA, but 14-4 in-region by itself would probably get you a look.

I can't remember but I think the last Pool C's from a year ago had as many as 6 in-region losses.

Reimink, Klein and Tanis as a group are not usually held to a bagel in that category either.

True, so true.  Their 0-7 performance, with Tanis not even taking one shot (in the 1 min. he was in the game) was uncharacteristicly awful.  Reimink and Klein are really pretty decent 3-point shooters, so it's anybody's guess why they were held to 0-fer.  My guess: the pressure of the Rivalry will sometimes even get to the veterans.

Every one of Reiminks shots was long.........for the game he seemed to be playing with a great deal more energy than usuall.  I think he was pretty jacked up to be playing out there.

......and yes the pressure of the rivalry gets to everyone at some point in their careers.  Even fans.  ;) :D

Who me???

I had to sing in church the next morning.  Fortunately, I share the vocals-leading with another guy and he stepped up.  Before I warmed up my vox box, our worship leader commented that I sounded like Barry White.  :D  Come here, closer, close   Oh, baby   Oh, baby   ;D

I feel emotionally, physically, and vocally spent after every one of those games!  That's why I love going to them.    :)

To Jesse's credit, he did have seven assists and six rebounds. That always helps.

I'm Chevy Chase and you're not.

I just called the Hope Sports Hotline and it says that even though it has been snowy in West Michigan the men's basketball game will be played as scheduled at 7:30.
