Does the MIAA MVP voting take place before or after the MIAA tourney?

This is slightly off-topic, but I couldn't believe that Lisa Winkle nor Bria Ebels failed to make any of the all-decade teams. Considering their accomplishments on the court, I was very surprised.

There's a much better board to discuss this and it would be completely on-topic.

The scoring records Floyd Brady set are really impressive. Especially when you recall these happened before the 3 point shot, and the 35 second clock.  Even more so when you acknowledge that the teams played fewer games each year than, and no post season activity at all.  The Hope records site shows Floyd played in 23 games as a senior, and 22 as a jr. so he probably played in fewer than 90 or 91 total games.  2004 divided by 90 is 22 pt. per game.

After years of seeing his name in Hope basketball programs, our son was thrilled to learn that Floyd was going to attend the final game at the Civic Center (and so was I).  We waited after the game while he took his turn cutting down the nets, and then we asked Floyd if he would autograph a program.  He did so with a big smile on his face, and some very gracious words of encouragement to a 13 year old kid (which I can't remember specifcally).  I just remember that he was the most humble man, who really made an impression on our entire family.

Hope fans should be licking their chops.  3 of their 4 games before they play Calvin again are against the bottom 3 in the MIAA.  That is a perfect time to get your bench some much needed minutes!

Rumor has it that the goal for the next 5 games is to get Holt at least 1 dunk per!  Or maybe I just made that up because it would be fun to see...you decide...

Maybe MVH should try to match Holt then. Has he successfully dunked yet? I seem to recall a game at DeVos this year (I think Albion, maybe Adrian) where Marcus got a clean look for a layup down low but missed the shot because he apparently first went up with the intention of dunking.

Did Cramer leave any of his shoes in the locker room for his remaining teammates?

I checked with the people at Woodtv to see if they had archived any of the game films from the Brady era.   Warrren Reynolds did the play by play on Calvin/Hope games for a few years.  Apparently the technology then had a shelf life that has long since been passed.  It was a long shot, but thought if any film existed perhaps we could get it or reformat it.

Hope's basketball records site credits Brady with 89 games.  22.5 pts per game for the career.

He holds Hope's single season scoring record and average.

Floyd is currently 2nd all-time in MIAA points scored, and is the leagues all-time leading rebounder.

I can't think of any dunks by Marcus.  Sometimes if you watch pre-game shoot around Will Bowser has been known to try some crazy stuff.  He's probably going to wow the crowd a few times in the next 3 years.

Don't quote me on this but one of the other guys in that video, Reed Swift, was supposed to play QB for Hope.  But a medical condition sidelined him.

My years at Hope exactly coincided with Floyd Brady (1964-68).  I love basketball, and the thought of going to watch him and the rest of the team play on Wednesday or Saturday was part of a very enjoyable and meaningful college experience.

As someone pointed out, there was no shot clock or 3 point shot, so it was a different game.  I don't remember any tournaments and only the regular season, which explains why Floyd only played in 89 games in his career, and only 23 in his senior year.  The game sure seemed to be a lot less physical than it is today (any comments, old knight?).

All Brady did in his four years was AVERAGE 22.5 points and 14 rebounds per game, for a total of 2004 points and 1,247 rebounds.  We didn't know what a double-double was back then, even when we are constantly seeing it!  In his senior year he averaged 31 points per game, and I don't know how many rebounds per game.  How quick was he?  Well, opponents couldn't guard him, so they fouled him; that was why he averaged over 9 points per game in his senior year from the free throw line!

In MIAA action, this 6' 3" forward still holds the career record for rebounds with 648, and is 63 points behind Mark Veenstra with 1,171 points in the MIAA.  He had a great outside shot, and I always wondered how he would have fared if the 3 point shot had existed when he played.  Also keep in mind that he was only 6' 3", but his leaping ability and positioning is what got him all those rebounds.

What the records don't show is his ball handling ability.  He was frequently asked to help break the press and bring the ball downcourt.  Can you imagine asking your leading rebounder to do that?

Several memories I will always have of Brady on the court:  Going for the rebound, you frequently saw two black hands above a number of white hands, since there were basically no or few black players in the MIAA in the mid-60's.  Also, when he drove to the hoop he sometimes shifted the ball from his right hand to his left while in mid-air to avoid any block.  And finally, he was right-handed, but had a sweet left handed hook shot that SAC posted earlier on the site.

I wish I had his career stats, because he seemed to be a high percentage shooter, and also passed the ball very well.  Coach Glenn Van Wieren, who completed his career at Hope when Brady arrived, called him "very unselfish.  He would get you the ball if you were open.  He was someone you loved to play with."  Van Wieren's younger brother Claire played with Brady for two years.

Most of my personal contacts were from an accounting lab that I headed when he took a class.  It was probably not his best subject, but in our talks he never asked (nor got) any special favors.  He was well thought of by my friends who played with him on the varsity.  I wish I had gotten to know him better.

May he rest in peace.

A well stated and pretty complete obit by AH so there's not much for me to add. I'll just say three things: Brady was the finest Hope hoopster ever, he was a true gentleman worthy of respect for how he carried himself, and he would still be a superior player in today's more physical game (Yes, today's game allows much more contact than did the officials of the 60's). In fact, I think he was the prototype of today's modern player due to his superior strength, athleticism, and on-floor assertiveness. He was aggressive without being dirty. RIP Floyd.
