Solid win for the Dutchmen. DVS had a hot had, Wolfe looked good, being agressive again. Reimink also played very well, Osburn also did well filling in for Klein. MVH didn't have to do much tonight, got to rest the wrist a little.

How about Carter throwing down, with all the talk about dunks the past few weeks, he deserves a shout out. I definetely did not expect the little guy to get up there and put it down with two hands. Shows how athletic the future point guard is.

Not exactly a throwdown. More of a putdown ... which is what I'm probably going to get from a lot of youse Hope fans.

I found it pretty weak, until you realize it was pretty much a vertical jump with almost no momentum.  :o

If you had Kelvin in the who from Midland dunks first contest, I think you won big tonight. :D

I also liked Brandon McClary's tribute to Dan Holt on the other end.

I think what made the dunk so great was the fact that it was so unexpected. When DVS passed it up the court to him everyone just assumed easy layup. Then he starts to stutter step into a straight vertical dunk. Pretty sweet if you ask me! :o
Its a great day to be a Dutchman!

Note

-----Some symetry tonight, as you know Floyd Brady passed away last weekend (nice moment of silence) and wore #32......in  Ryan Klein's absense tonight, Zach Osburn started and of course wears......#32.

First of all, a Huge thanks to FDF for getting me a night pass out of the center so that I was able to get to the Hope game tonight!   ;)

A couple of thoughts from the game:

*  First of all, thanks to the Hope staff for taking a moment to honor the life of former player Floyd Brady. That was sweet - just like he was.

*  Second - Have the Academy Awards been handed out yet? If not, let's get one polished up for Tyler Wolfe. He really gave a peformance. Unfortunately I can't remember the Olivet player who's number was called for the foul. It was pure textbook. Tyler was in the right place at the right time, with the man wearing the stripes standing nearby, and then the "ugh!" exclamation as he goes to the ground. Priceless, simply priceless!

*  Speaking of awards, is anyone else even close to the "Being-called-for-at-least-one-illegal-screen-call-per-game" statistic than Steven Kratz?  I loved his intensity tonight for the game, but ... its really not an award that we want to win!!

*  Free Throws. Yep, the first one for Hope went up, and out. I thought, "Oh no, not again." So I decided to keep the stats for the game. Well... guess I had better keep that stat from now on since Hope went 10 for 12 in the first half and 6 of 7 in the second for a 84%!  Yeeeehaaaa!!

*  Layups and bunny shots. I think it got up to 6 misses for the Dutchmen. Enter the game, Kelvin Carter. Layup, bucket. Layup, bucket.  Learning moment, GIVE IT TO KELVIN CARTER!!   :)

*  The masked Dan Holt. Anybody know what happened to him?

*  Get well wishes to Ryan Klein. Kudos to Zach Osburn et al for filling in for Ryan, he'd be very proud!

I found the second half of play very interesting. Hope had a decent lead and I would have figured that GVW would get some of the other subs in (Bowser or Sharples) but GVW decided to try to mix things up a bit and try some new line ups. He put Carter in at point and let DVS run the 2 guard. DVS really seemed to be in his element at this time. He moved without the ball really well and work hard to get an open look. This also allowed Carter to move and get open when DVS had the ball. It was a very different look for the dutchmen but I think Glenn was quite pleased with what he was seeing. It will be interesting to see if GVW tries this lineup at all on saturday against Kzoo.

Will someone please tell me when the last time a Hope point guard dunked!!! I know it was no Steve Cramer dunk but HEY it was still fun to see!  :D

Not sure there has ever been a Hope point guard that dunked in a game.  Greg Immink did it in practice, but not in a game situation.  Maybe there were others, but not that immediately come to mind.

Word on Holt's Rip Hamilton impersonation is that he took a flying elbow from Scott Glaser in practice.  After the game at Albion, you knew they were going to be working hard on rebounding, and when you do that, well let's say a few bruises are expected.

I too loved the 3 guard offense, and the fact that GVW let some of those combination spend some quality minutes on the floor together - bodes well for the future.

Jesse Reimink was an absolute beast on the boards, and gets the game ball from me.

Bowser didn't play much - but also looked very pale and not much energy.  I'm guessing he's a bit under the weather.

Carter may have been the first Midland guy to dunk last night (and that was mild compared to what he's done in practice), but Bowser did throw one down earlier this year

I have to say, I am very proud of the Hornets that saw the court last night.  They battled the best they could.

Clancy, McCain, Orozco and Matych were in street clothes.

The Hornets got off to a great start up 6-2 after 3 minutes. Albion then went on a 25-2 run where it seemed they didn't miss a shot.   The first half took all of 30 minutes as there were total of 6 fouls called, 3 on each team I believe.  Early in the second half the Hornets got within 7, but that was about it.

A lot of young players saw action for the Hornets tonight.  Kzoo had 5 Frosh on the floor for the last 4+ minutes of the game.  Great experience for them.

Kellogg again was the leader on both ends of the floor.  Basically, everything the Hornets attempted ran through him. He was definitely out of gas at the end.

I really don't have a great feeling about the Hornet's chances tonight at Kresge.  They are going into a very hostile environment. The Krazies have returned in full force,  and Albion is riding the high from Saturday's win.  There's also a bit of a revenge factor.

My hopes are that DJ and the boys are still basking in the glow of victory over Hope (see albion.edu/sports).  If perhaps, to quote one Joe Haklin, Albion comes in "fat and happy" then maybe the Hornets can steal away a victory from the league's 2nd best team.

I have no doubts Kellogg and McCain will be up to the challenge on the offensive end of the floor and on the boards.

The key question: How will Kalamazoo handle Albion's defensive intensity? Will they back down? Or will they fight forward?

Stinger... Unfortunately it seems as though you are right about "full force".

Nope. Actually a tame crowd from the Albion section. If you read my post, I wrote the Krazies being back in "full force".  They were non-existent last night.

Wow, that is rather incredible. I realize that due to the storms the games were played on an atypical evening but its amazing that the attendance at Hope more than doubled the other three games combined. Me thinks Calvin's new arena will look very very empty with 500 fans. ;) (Really we love you guys even if many of your fans only care about 2 - 5 games a year). Out of curiosity, any chance the students were on break? Hope always has a 4 day weekend around this time of year. (I believe its this Friday after classes through Tuesday this year so its a good Saturday to be on the road anyways). Could Calvin's campus have been empty for a similar reason? Or was everyone at dance lessons? :D ;)

Duistermars?
I don't know that Brad had the ability, or the "temperament" to dunk

They weren't really a big factor last Saturday either.  6-8 guys under the basket, who showed up half way throught the first half.  Nothing like what we've "enjoyed" in the past

Yes, they are on break this weekend, but I had heard that a large number of the students don't have Friday classes, and so they left yesterday.

As you "said" I'm going blind  ;)

What was up with the guys in street clothes. Sick or otherwise?

Question for those in the know...

Are we ever going to see video feed from MIAA games? I know Calvin and Hope do "TV" production, and I assume other schools may do similar things. Why not incorporate doing camera work and production at some games? There are some colleges around the country who do it for every home game... Sure would be nice.
