That's right! Hope fans are SWEET!   ;D

"Sweet" doesn't cut it in this league.

Only supersweet matters. ;)

Big announcement from Alma today, and I find this surprising but exciting all the same.

http://www.alma.edu/news/releases/archives/2008/02/04/facilities

Time for the folks at Albion and Kalamazoo to start makeing phone calls to the big money donors.

My prediction is that no matter what the other MIAA schools can come up with, starting next year Calvin will lead the league in total attendance and ironically total number of empty seats at the same time.

That may be the case due to curiousity about the new building. But my guess is Hope still leads. And I am sure after a year Calvin students will return to attending two games a year.

Note

-----Some symetry tonight, as you know Floyd Brady passed away last weekend (nice moment of silence) and wore #32......in  Ryan Klein's absense tonight, Zach Osburn started and of course wears......#32.

Speaking of symetry, YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE THIS...

Floyd Brady broke Hope College center Paul Benes' career scoring record of 1,741 on Feb. 3, 1968 with his patented left handed hook shot.  He ended his career with 2,004 points.

He recalled it like it was yesterday in a Holland Sentinel interview in 2005.  "One of the players gave me a pick and I came over the top of the free throw line, got a pass and before I knew it I threw it up and fortunately it went in," said Brady.  "It was memorable."

EXACTLY 40 YEARS LATER TO THE DAY, FEB. 3, 2008, THE HOPE LEGEND WAS TAKEN HOME BY HIS CREATOR.

To add to the story, I was at the game, but I have to admit I don't remember the shot.  However, I know I was there, because my girlfriend at the time and I went out after the game and GOT ENGAGED.

Both Brady's record and our marriage of 39 years are still intact!

No disrespect but it may be time to start a seperate Floyd Brady thread.

Shame on you MK. This thread is for the "MIAA" and Floyd was as much a part of the history of the MIAA as anybody. You may not of meant any disrespect, but being the player and the person he was, Floyd deserves as much time on this board as people want to give him.

I'm happy to see another good half of FT shooting from Hope. 8-9.

So HCG, you must have some inside knowledge on why Hope's attendance will drop off the charts next year in order for your prediction to come to fruition ::)

5k capacity vs 3k capacity.....mathematically, Hope could sell out every game and still lag Calvin's total attendance.

Calvin has had a larger capacity for years (excluding this year) and still Hope usually beats them in attendance.

Calvin cruises to a 63-48 win over Adrian.  KVS was very happy with the first half, feeling like Calvin did everything they should have, and that his team has finally gelled.  The second half had a few lapses, but also some additional bright spots.  One was a phenomenal no-look, over-the-head pass from Griffen to Mantel for an easy layup.  Supersweet!   :-*

That wasn't the case pre-Devos.  Obviously the HCC was limited by a very small capacity,  but what I'm saying is that a shiny new arena does bring in the fans.  The Calvin Fieldhouse isn't a great place to watch a game inherently but the new arena will be.

hope played a good game sat vs kzoo  now onwards to adrian at adrian good game coming up wed with calvin at albion
i love hope  sports all of them are really great to watch

Great decisive win by the Knights today!  Yes we can definitely look forward to the matchup at DeVos in a couple weeks but I think there's a huge game this week and I'm sure KVS's crew isn't looking ahead.  Albion--the owner of the MIAA's longest current winning streak by the way--is hosting the Knights on Wed to see who can gain sole possession of 2nd place.  This game is huge to see if the Knights recent success is a serious trend or not.

There's been a lot of discussion about Hope's use of the bench this year.  60% of a game is 24 minutes.  This seems to be a good proxy for how much a team relies on a certain player.  Last year, Hope had only one player (Cramer) that averaged over 24 min's/game.  I remember many games in 06-07 in which Hope would get a huge lead and GVW would go to the bench and we'd see 10-12 players get 12+ minutes of playing time, with no one over 20.  Those were some crazy box scores.  http://www.miaa.org/mbb/stats/0607/0117adho.htm and http://www.miaa.org/mbb/stats/0607/0120hoam.htm are two of many examples. This year, Hope has FIVE players over 24 min's/game.  I don't think fatigue is an issue since these are kids playing twice per week, but it's more of a margin of error issue.  In the postseason, what if a player is hurt or gets in early foul trouble?  Is there anyone else battle tested enough to step up?

As a contrast, Calvin has 8 players this season averaging at least 16 min's/game, while Hope only has the big 5 (no one else over 13).  I think this could be a factor come tourney time.  At least I'm hoping it is!

Great defensive effort by the Knights today, holding a solid Adrian team to 48 points.  Young seemed to do all the work on offense for them, being the only player scoring in double figures.  I like where the offense is heading for Calvin, but they looked quite sloppy at times today.  They got to learn to execute their fast breaks....too many 3-point shots and not enough lay-ups.  Passes were pretty sloppy

Looking forward to the Albion game Wednesday

Happy Calvin Guy, it's nice to have another Calvin poster on here!

Sorry, my unipolar protestant hombre, but you are incorrect.  The last five years average attendance breaks down like this:

2007
1. Hope     2,923
3. Calvin     1,891

2006
1. Hope     2,928
3. Calvin     2,089

2005
1. Hope     2,462
3. Calvin     2,261

2004
1. Hope     2,491
3. Calvin     2,014

2003
1. Hope      2,383
3. Calvin    1,904

But take heart, as always we can take our solace in the fact that our attendance at National Championship celebrations blows them away!

Heh heh.  I promised Erm Schmigget that I would refrain from any reference to the N*tional Ch*mpionship T*lly, so I won't pile on here...... ;)

I don't have the numbers but I seem to recall that if we go back over the last 10-15 yrs Calvin had its share of attendance titles as well.  I could be wrong....but if you think that Calvin won't make up a <1k/game deficit with the new arena and packing 5k in there for Hope and homecoming, you're crazy!  Either way, I think it's great that so many MIAA schools are getting first rate facilities.  DeVos is an absolutely wonderful arena and I think Calvin's will be too.
