I recall seeing the Calvin Athletic Director wading into the student section to root out miscreants and settle the fans down.  Sounds like the programs in the SI article need to shut the fans out for a game or two, and then they will police themselves.  I'm glad I went to and support a school that won't stand for that type of thing getting out of hand.

I couldn't agree more - I've witnessed the same thing on the Hope side.  I know for the Dew Crew they self-police that pretty well.

Times change, people change, kids change, tuition changes.  Lots of social, economic, and probably even religious changes have occured since 92-93.  Even at that time most people would have probably told you the biggest reason Hondered was at Calvin was his dad being there as AD.
I don't think the loyalty factor was ever as strong as some non Calvin people have made it up to be.  Plenty of various Christian High kids have played for Hope.
To me the major reason we see fewer Christian High grads playing at Calvin is the money handed out by the D1&2 and NAIA schools.  It seems as tuition costs have gone up the $$ are just too good to turn down.  Lets see go to Calvin or Hope or Kalamazoo and graduate with 60k + in debt or take the money from CU, AQ WMU et. al.  and have no debt.
Some Christian High kids just don't think it's cool to go to Calvin, and they want to go away to school.  Again there are lots of reasons why a student (athlete or not) chooses one school over another.
Why I've even heard of a jock or two afraid they couldn't handle the academic load at Calvin.

Ahhhh.... the games at Depauw.  That atmosphere wasn't as close as to what is included in SI, but there are similarities - Unfortunately.  :(

sitting in your own section usually solves a lot of problems.

Guess what? I have friends at Depauw too FDF!
There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

I feel the same about my alma mater.  I recall a few years ago seeing Hope's AD speaking to Dew Crew leaders about specific things they (or certain ones) were doing/saying that were inappropriate.  The Dew Crew since then has done a pretty good job of policing itself.  The strong show of authority by someone in an authoritative position goes a long way.  I also recall statements by coaches and administrators suggesting they would simply cancel games if inappropriate behavior continues.

If the fans are going to misbehave like bad children, treat them as such.  If they want to be treated like adults, demand mature behavior from them.  They can still have fun and support their team without crossing the line into deplorable behavior.

Good - then they can tell you that we (yes I was actually there) we're sitting in a section labeled Hope Fans.  There were indeed some DePauw fans who were sitting in that section, but who was in the wrong place?

My favorite was the Wisconsin fans who serenaded Mateen Cleaves with "99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall" after his arrest for underage alcohol possession.  Knowing Badger fans, it is a safe bet that many of the singers were a) under 21 and b) already drunk.  Ain't hypocrisy grand? ;)

Were they the ones that were sitting in the Hope section?  Why does this bother you so much?

Hope fan:  I think I'll go sit in that completely unoccupied section over there, since the section set aside for me is full of DePauw fans.

DePauw fan:  HOPE #*&S!!!  HOPE WOMEN ARE *&#$@!!!  HOPE CAN &#^* MY #(%^!!!

Clearly, the Hope fan is the most out of line here.   ::)

As to fan control: I agree that it is on the administration. Ban the students from one or two games, or stop a game and watch what happens. They do it because they know they can get away with it. The inmates are running the asylum at these places.

Stinger: did you read the article? I don't think Kevin Love was sitting in the wrong section, nor do I think Gordon's parents were to blame. Seriously.

GRCH: when I graduated from Holland Christian about a third of my graduating class went to Calvin. I don't know what the current numbers are, but I know they're much lower. One big reason: Grand Valley. For student-athletes, the price tag might be prohibitive (even if I think it ought not be; as far as I'm concerned the additional $30K of debt you might accrue at an MIAA school versus a state school is money well spent and never to be regretted - even if I expect someone to note that's easy for me to say  ::)).

Friday's games: I expect Hope and Calvin to triumph, and a barnburning championship game.

Wow, I am going crazy waiting for tomorrow evening's games and then I won't get to check on the results of Saturday's game until late on Sunday! I may go nuts. :P

Nobody's really talked much about the Adrian-Hope match-up.  Will Adrian give Hope a game?  Thoughts?  They came within four at the DeVos earlier in the year.  My prediction would be Hope by 17.
