Calvin 75 Albion 58

Story of this one was really the first half play of Calvin who took this game right from the tap.  Albion made just 1 of their first 9 shots, while Calvin started out pretty hot and held the Britons to just 8 points in the first 10 minutes.

Albion had a pretty horrific night shooting for awhile, everything was short and when they went inside it resulted in usually just throwing the ball up at the hoop. Albion was pretty intimidated on the inside. Outside they were just 3-17 from 3 and the starting 5 a collective 0-8, your just not going to win many games doing that.  The britons aren't a great 3 point shooting team but they're better than that.     They didn't play with their usual confidence and energy.  Calvin certainly had a lot to do with that, I think Albion found out really quick they weren't playing the same team they faced in the season.

Calvin had a lot of great play tonight but John Mantel really stood out for me, he made some really good confident moves tonight, and when he has the fadeaways falling he's just that much more difficult to defend.  Albion really had no answer for the Calvin post play for much of the game.

Second half, for a brief time Calvin seemed to lose their edge and fell back into some bad offensive habits, this gave the Britons one more opportunity for a comeback, that was inevitably doomed to fall short.   From 20 down Albion got it back down to 9 in just under 4 minutes with a 13-2 run, it was the only 4 minutes Albion looked like the better team all night.  But 3 minutes latter it was back to a 14 point deficit, and thats just too much for the Britons to battle back from.

Bottom line was Calvin made Albion play from a big deficit all night, and the Britons just don't have the kind of fire power to get back in those kinds of games.  Calvin pretty much dominated the game without much from Caleb Veldhouse, 0-1 from trey (12), they were just that good tonight.

Albion probably finishes off a great season at 19-6, and  a 2nd place finish in the MIAA with a 13 game winning streak, not bad for a team that went 10-15 from last season.  Certainly the surprise team of the MIAA season.

Well the ride home from Holland was NOT fun. The roads were slickery and then as I headed south, the SNOW came down big time. As Dorothy put it, "There's no place like home!!!"

Some notes from the game:

*  Did you know that #10 (Jessie Reimink) scored Hope's 10th point in the 1st half?  (Hold on, more fun facts coming!!)

*  1st Half shooting and rebounding.  Let's take a look.  Shooting was 44% and I was too tired to look at the rebounding. Let's just say that Hope struggled at both entities.  Thank goodness there's half-time!!

*  .03 second left in the first half.  #33 (Derek VanSolkema) puts up a prayer at half-court, or so, (and calls it off the backboard) AND IT GOES IN!!   ;D   Holy Sweetness.  Hope now leads 33-32. As a poster stated before, that sure put a different tone into the half-time chats for both teams!

*  For the winning prize, what posters don't stand and support their school during the playing of their school's fight song??  Hmmmm.... ::)

*  2nd Half Defenseman Award of the Year goes to RYAN KLEIN!!! He guarded Desmond Young like I've never seen someone guard him before. I think for the majority of the 2nd half Mr. Young was limited to just some free throw points. Ryan was giving it his all for the team. Nice job Ryan.

*  Scoring.  1st half: Tyler Wolfe - 2pts. Marcus Vanderheide - 7 points.  Insert the half-time chat. 2nd half: Tyler Wolfe - 16 points.  Marcus Vanderheide - 17 points.  (these aren't official, just what I tried to mark down on my sheet during the game). Maybe the halftime chat should be held prior to tomorrow night's game!!!  Nice job Tyler and Marcus!

*  A famous saying coverted to a basketball game: "Live by the bounce pass, DIE  by the bounce pass!  Auuugggghhhhhhh, Bounce passes drive me nuts!!! - at least the ones that become a turnover!

*  New Math!!  If you have 31, then take 31 away, what do you end up with?  Answer: 2 points for Hope!!!  That's because #31 for Hope (Vanderheide) bopped the ball from #31 for Adrian (Weber) which became a steal, a layup, and two points for Hope!!

A little tense the first half, but after watching the Dutchmen for many years, a person definintely learns a lot about patience!!!!

Go Hope!

Hope 83 Adrian 64

Adrian played as near a perfect first half for their needs as they could, even with some turnovers.  They controlled the pace, executed the offense, made some tough shots and were rebounding.  They made Hope look pretty rough around the edges for awhile.  Even still Hope was able to lead most of the first half but unable to really put a convincing lead on the board.  Adrian was able to get some mo at the end of the half with 3 straight 3's stretched over 5 long minutes almost coinciding with Hope's own 5 minutes stretch of the scoreless variety.

Derek VanSolkema's half court banker at the buzzer might have been the turn for some, but not for me.  The turn for me came from 3 areas in the 2nd half.  The first was what looks now like the brilliant move of the night putting Ryan Klein on Desmond Young.  Young scored 1 FG in the second half after 16 first half points and clearly being the best player on the floor.   The second was Tyler Wolfe going off for 16 points early in the second half taking a 35-34 game to 58-39.  Lastly the Dutchmen had to dominate the glass in the 2nd half, Hope finished with 18 offensive boards and I'd bet most of those came in the 2nd half.

Marcus Vanderheide had what ended up a great game with 24, he and Adrian's Ian Weber went at it quite a bit tonight and both got the best of the other a few times.  But it was Marcus' ability to hit the outside jumper that made the difference in that matchup.

Ultimately the Bulldogs collapsed under Hope's better 2nd half defensive effort, the turnover's piled up and much like the first game of the night the deficit just became to much to overcome.

As a team, Hope may have struggled with the D a bit in the first half, but beside Ryan Klein, again Ty Tanis shined on the defensive end.  So much so I hadn't even realized he was 0-4 on the night untill I saw the boxscore.  But the Fr came up with solid D and 5 rebounds along the way.

Vanderheide 24, Wolfe 18, VanSolkema 13, Reimink 10

Young 23, Weber 15

Ryan Gallus, Roseville

I believe tickets at Calvin's box office go on sale at 9 AM tomorrow, but I'm not 100% on that one.

DCHN:  You may be right about Albion.  Last I could find Wooster was still down versus Wabash.  That eats a C.

What say we "eat a C" tomorrow night?

It's good to see Calvin win by double digits against a quality team yet only hitting five 3 pointers and having only two players connect on at least one or more 3 pointer in the game.  Hope will probably come out tomorrow night trying to make Calvin beat them down low like the game last week Wednesday, and it's a good sign Calvin did so to a quality team tonight.

no way best dunk in d3 history

it should be a great game tonight  i hope a sell out  i might have to take some herat pills tonight it might be that close

KII:  we may both have spoken too soon.  7-0 Albion run, and now Zoerhof throws a stupid pass.  Need to keep focused.  Albion is not a team to let hang around.

If you were there, you would have noticed that Zoerhof did not throw it away.  It was a set play on an inbounds from under the basket.  The receiver simply didn't break to the basket as he was supposed to.

We're all hungry and to "eat a C" sounds very appetizing.

Oh, gohope!  You're a tricky one, you are!

Some follow up notes:

*DVS's 3 was from beyond the half-court line.  Oh my goodness!   :o
*What posters don't stand?  Um, those who are old and who's attention is fading, evidently (I believe they were standing every time, but witnesses tell me otherwise)    :P  :'(
*Klein did a fabulous job on Young.  Fabulous. :o
*DVS's 3, and a good half-time chewing out, did help spur the Dutchmen on in the 2nd half    8)
*The bounce pass is a useful tool.  Check the highlights from TV13 from last week.    ;D
*Tanis outrebounded VDH, ever so slightly.  Way to go Ty! :)
*I don't have any worries that Hope will not be motivated to win this game.  Still will need Tums, though.   :D
*The inevitable has happened, and my case of Tums has not arrived.
:( :o :P

A couple of great games yesterday - even if the score's don't reflect it.  Couple of thoughts from the games:

- First time I've seen Veltema look like he did last year - HOPEfully it was a single game phenomena

- First time I've seen the official the furthest from the coach call the T, but then KVS was pointing right at him and yelling at him

- First time I've seen a team (Albion) just throw the ball at the basket so much

- First time I've seen an official stop the game to warn a player to stop taunting the fans.  Maybe that was in the players mind when he blew that dunk.

- First time I've seen Klein guarding Young.  Based on how well he did, I think that same strategy could be employed on other teams / players

- First time I've been that elated going into half leading by 1 - a 50 foot shot will do that

- First time I get to watch Hope's men and women both play for the tourney title at home
