Good article Pat on what being #1 does or does not do for a team.  To automatically assume going in #1 gives a team an added incentive or a bigger target for opponents is pure conjecture.  Still have to win the next 5 or 6 games regardless where you start.  Now, if I were a Hope fan, the more important thing is where you play.  Getting those early rounds at home sure helps a team.  I know it did for Calvin in 00, but the 92 team played in MN, and then won it all in OH.  If you are very good, and get a little luck here and there good things can happen. :)

I thought that Knollcrest hosted a few Final Fours in the early 90s and it happened to include the 1992 title? I'm too lazy to dig that up, but am I remembering wrong?

The 1992 final four wasn't at Knollcrest.

Calvin hosted some final fours in the 80s I think.

The Knights partied with Homer, Bart, Lisa, Maggie and Marge that year in beautiful downtown Springfield.  I won't get into rumors on how the tire fire was started.

I think Bleeding Gums Murphy joined the party as well, but passed away just a couple years later.

If the Knights partied,.....the shades must have been pulled down pretty tight:)

As several others have pointed out Calvin hosted the finals in the mid 80's until about 88.  When Calvin went to the final 4 in 90, and 92 it was at Wittenberg.  In 93 the finals shuffled off to Buffalo, and have been in Salem for over 10 years now.  About 2-3 years ago the MIAA made a pitch (to the NCAA) to get the men's final moved back to GR using the Delta Plex.  The folks in VA must have put some more money in the pot, and the finals stayed in Salem..  If you have not been there the games are played in a hockey rink. ;)

Actually the party in 92 was at the Marriot (in Springfield, OH) just off I-70.  The pep band from UW Pville played some polka music, and a good time was had by all.  Several coaches etc. even wound up in the pool.  I hate to destroy some peoples idea of how Calvin parties, but if, and when you win a banner you will understand. :D

Would Yankee fans root for the Red Sox for the betterment of the American Leauge?  Will Hillary root for Obama for the betterment of the Democratic party?

Absolutely NOT!!! and Probably.

Yours and Stinger's hatred may run deep, but most Hope/Calvin/MIAA fans are a bit more rational. Besides... we don't really need you, but if we had your support... Thanks!

I don't have any hatred.  I just don't want Hope to win a National Championship because then I might possess the same jealousy that the Dutch fans have and I wouldn't want to be seen acting like them.

Speaking of not being jealous, how's that new arena coming?

Pretty good.  They are starting to work on the walls now.

But they spend a lot of their time working on the indoor track and tennis courts, so there's usually not too many workers in the arena section, lately.

And they are working on the natatorium and the new dormitory and soon they will start on the fine arts center and the commons.  Pretty well rounded school, I would say.  And like Hope, they got most of their money for the arena from former Calvin students.  Haven't heard yet if they will have condiments but I'll be sure to let you all know as soon as I find out.  Everything is being named after donors.  I, very appropriately, have donated one of the unrinals in the men's room.  It's orange with blue trim.   -Wiz

Makes sense, that way you can enjoy it everytime you live up to your name.  I know I think of Calvin every time I go to the John   :-\

Actually, they've done quite a bit of work on the Salem Civic Center in the last couple of years, since Calvin's last Final Four trip. You'd recognize it, but barely. New floor, new seats, new padding against the walls at either end of the floor, etc.

The men are hosting because it is an every other year policy with the NCAA.  If you recall last year the Hope women hosted the first round at DeVos.

No they went to DePauw last year.  The women could have hosted this week since the men drew a bye, that is possible in the NCAA tournament manual.  However they chose otherwise, for reasons I do not know.

But otherwise, yes the men have priority in even years for the first and second round when both teams are eligible.

Hope's women have never hosted a tournament game since moving to DeVos.

MK:  Make up your own mind on whether you want to pull for Hope or not.  However, you should keep in mind the MIAA, and MIAA schools gain much more by any success the Hope teams may have, rather than their failure.  Winning a banner would go a long ways towards quieting down all the talk about how great the CCIW, WIAC, UAA etc. etc. etc. view themselves. :D

It seems to be a trend for lurkers to come out and start posting lately, so I felt that now is as good of a time as ever to do so with the Dutchmen playing in the tournament.  I feel that even with team alliances in place, one has to pull for a team from one's  conference.  It enables you to compare how your team may have competed against teams from conferences such as the CCIW, WIAC, and UAA.
