As a 100% neutral observer who is perpetually consumed with curiosity regarding this archrivalry, I wonder which is more likely to provoke the ire of the Hope faithful -- this:

or this:

Quote from: northb on March 21, 2008, 02:14:17 PMI selected Calvin due to the ... slightly better academic programs

Now my child is preparing to go to Calvin.  I would have no doubt that if she would have chosen Hope she would have had a pretty good education, but I am glad she chose Calvin, where she will get a great education.

GS:  You are a devil you know that don't you.   ;) The only possible answer is D:  All of the above.  Even when we find ourselves saying something nice about Hope it always comes out with a little maroon and gold spin on it. :D

I'm sorry you feel this way. Good thing I don't believe your opinion is representative of your colleagues.

This is most likely to fire people up, as the first argument is easier to shrug off. It's not like the difference in education between these two schools is Ivy vs. CC - it's more like small liberal arts college vs. small liberal arts college. To each his own :)

NB:  At least we tried to educate some of our fellow Knights.   ;)  It is pretty obvious to me we (all MIAA schools) gain more by Hope's success this weekend than we will if they come in second place again.  The same dunderheads are always wondering why the MIAA doesn't get more recognition in D3.  Well duh!! :)  Winning championships  gets a conference lots of recognition.

MK:  Cheer, root for whomever you want.  Just know that if it were Olivet or Alma or Tri State down in Salem today I would pull for them just like I am for Hope.  NB; is 100% correct in that most Hope posters pulled for Calvin in 05, and 00 and before that as well.
FWIW:  All Michigan fans lost as much as the Ohio State fans did in the last two championship games.  If you doubt this just talk with any fan from any school in any other BCS conference. ;) ;)  OSU's losing made the Big 10 look as bad as it did OSU.

MWK:  Please find another hobby.  >:   :-[  If you are really a Knight fan, you would also be an MIAA fan, and as hard as it is for us old time Knights, we really do want Hope to have some fun, and win a championship this weekend.  If you read this board regularly you would understand, that while true Knights would fight tooth and nail with Hope in any competition from bball to tiddilywinks once the competition is over we are FRIENDS.  Being a friend means you respect the other party, and you want only what is best for them.
Dang it MWK,  you made me go and give you - karma, and I really hate to do that.. >:(

With all due respect I have to disagree.  Being an "old time Knight" the last thing I want is Hope to come home with a National Championship.  There are some that believe we have to root for the MIAA, just like Michigan fans have to root for Ohio State because of the big Ten, or Dale Ernhardt Jr. fans have to root for Jeff Gordon because they both drive Chevy's.  Tonight this Knight fan will be rooting for Washington U.

Go Washington U!
Beat Hope!

I see your point, in some ways I want to continue to point to our two (men's) National Championships and Hope's Zero.  But that is overcome by a few other arguments.  For one, the classy Hope posters on this board mostly rooted for Calvin in 2000 and 2005, so the least I can do is return the favor.

Another factor is that Calvin and Hope are more similar to each other than any other schools.  That is what makes the rivalry so cool--divided by a common heritage.  When I looked at schools back in the 80's Hope and Calvin were similar in reformed theology, service, worship and many other ways.  I selected Calvin due to the greater opportunities available for extra-curricular activities, slightly better academic programs, and that the kids at Calvin seemed a little cooler vs. the kids at Hope just a little dorkier.  The girls seemed just slightly cuter at Calvin, too.

Now my child is preparing to go to Calvin.  I would have no doubt that if she would have chosen Hope she would have had a pretty good education, but I am glad she chose Calvin, where she will get a great education. So, my purplepajamad friend, if you are confident in your school, it does not hurt to support our friends to the west.

And even if they win it all, it is still 2-1.   ;D

Can't say I care much for that distinction.

Other than that, thanks to you and realist for supporting Hope.

That is the beauty of it--they are all otherwise occupied for a while.  If they win they are in a good mood and I am forgiven.  If they lose they were gonna be in a lousy mood anyhow.   ;D     ;D

Good luck to the Flying Dutchmen tonight against a very good Washington University team ...

May you win tonight and tomorrow, so you can bring home a national championship to the oldest collegiate conference in the nation, the MIAA!!

I suspect much the same thing, although I would not be surprised if some Hope fans took the understandable tack of using the acquisition of a certain hunk of Walnut and Bronze to focus their we're-number-one index-finger-wagging at specific Calvin fans (i.e., MaroonKnighty and northb). That's just human nature. And if they lose this weekend and are seeking to vent their collective spleen, I'm interested in seeing at whom they vent their spleens, and for what, and how much.

Now, realist thinks of me as the equivalent of Eris, the Greek goddess of discord. According to Homer's Iliad Eris tossed the golden apple to be awarded to the fairest one between Hera, Aphrodite, and Athena into their midst at the wedding reception of Peleus and Thetis and thereby caused the outbreak of the Trojan War. Me, I prefer to think of myself as one of those guys wearing goggles and a lab coat at Alamogordo on July 16, 1945, holding a clipboard and watching from a safe distance as I prepare to monitor the detonation of the first atomic bomb. :D

I am awed.  :)  I remember the Trojan war, but not Eris.  I am humbled, and bow to you oh sage of the D3 posters.

Wash U up by 10.  Is this the same team that Calvin beat?

Hope looks terrible in the second half.  Lots of contested bunnies being missed.  What a shame that they haven't been able to put together anything.  At least WashU can make some free throws
