any hoop fans make it over to the courthouse last night to take in any games? Hope played GVSU, and although its only summer, I'm curious to see how the young and newly transplanted Dutchman fared.

Heck, I'd like to know how Michigan would fare against GVSU.

Wish I could have been there - sounds like it was fun!!  :)

It was indeed fun, and an exciting finish.  Two plays form that game stick out in my mind - both of them caused a good laugh throughout the crowd (which I would guess was about 250 or so)

In the first half, Derek Griffin drives to the hoop, and comes right out of one of his shoes.  He missed the shot, and it was rebounded by Sugar's team.  Everyone is racing down the floor, and Derek runs back to grab his shoe and then try to get back.  He's just between the 3 point line and half court when there is a turnover, so one of his teammates throws him the ball.   He drops his shoe, catches the ball, turns around and drains a 3.   Best looking 1 shoed 3 I've ever seen.

At the very end of the game, Jamerson has just scored the go ahead basket (a truly amazing left handed kind of a hook shot).  One the players on Sugar's team inbounds the ball to Kyle Visser, who throws up a one handed 3/4 court shot that's nothing but net - a game winner!!  Too bad the whole rest of Sugar's team had been calling a timeout, so it didn't count.  The look on Visser's face was priceless.

FYI:

It was reported in Friday's (6/13/08) Kalamazoo Gazette that Vicksburg HS forward/center Tim Pearcy has decided to play basketball at Tri-State University in Angola, IN.

The airwaves have been paying many tributes this week to the classy Tim Russert who died suddenly while preparing for his weekend television show.  I remember in 2000 he moderated the GOP presidential debate at Calvin College and while visiting he was informed of the tremendous basketball rivalry between Hope and Calvin.  He was told of all the usual facts we read about when these two teams play...which school won how many games, what the point spread is, etc.  He was so enthralled that he said if someone would let him know the score of the next game he would announce it on Meet The Press.  True to his word, he declared, for all the world to hear, that Calvin beat Hope.  Class!

realist

wiz:  I recall that incident as well, however, I remember he promised to make the announcement "if the Calvin students behaved themselves during the debate".  Being a graduate of John Carrol in OH. Russert  would be familiar with D3.

And there you have it.... Maybe Lee's writing is a result of a few too many prods to the brain from said aliens. ::)

While perhaps not as significant as the advent of interplanetary travel, I can say that my son and I defended the Orange and Blue on the links yesterday against the game efforts of the Knights, Good and Old. Whether our victory was a result of technological superiority or skill remains to be seen, and can only be decided by the two Knights coughing up the cash to level the field. Perhaps all their surplus resources are absorbed in the current Capital Campaign. In any case, it was a fine battle in the best Hope/Calvin tradition, and most enjoyable. The weather and the company were both as good as can be.

I choose to believe it was the technological superiority. ;) Nonetheless, it was great fun.

Ouch. That's too bad for me, because OK actually took me by a stroke. I guess if you saw my second shot on 14, it would eliminate any doubt as to whether skill was the key variable.
