While perhaps not as significant as the advent of interplanetary travel, I can say that my son and I defended the Orange and Blue on the links yesterday against the game efforts of the Knights, Good and Old. Whether our victory was a result of technological superiority or skill remains to be seen, and can only be decided by the two Knights coughing up the cash to level the field. Perhaps all their surplus resources are absorbed in the current Capital Campaign. In any case, it was a fine battle in the best Hope/Calvin tradition, and most enjoyable. The weather and the company were both as good as can be.

I choose to believe it was the technological superiority. ;) Nonetheless, it was great fun.

Ouch. That's too bad for me, because OK actually took me by a stroke. I guess if you saw my second shot on 14, it would eliminate any doubt as to whether skill was the key variable.

OK is sneaky good. ;)

It probably would be best not to mention HC's use of a transfer (a former Bulldog no less) to bolster his team. ::)

Just in case anyone was wondering..........

When precedent requires putting up a first loser banner, why not go ahead and go with the second loser banner?

Hope Finishes on Top in Men's Basketball Attendance

For the sixth straight year, Hope College has led all NCAA Division
III men's basketball programs in home attendance.

This is the tenth time in school history that Hope has been the men's
basketball attendance leader.  The MIAA champion Flying Dutchmen
averaged 3,016 fans per game over 17 dates, nearly doubling runnerup
Wooster, Ohio who averaged 1,621. MIAA rival Calvin slipped from third
to fifth in the rankings, averaging 1,373 fans over 13 home dates.

Hope's attendance average, the best in school history, was bolstered
by three home NCAA tournament games that averaged over 3,600 fans.
The Flying Dutchmen posted a 17-0 home floor record that included a
pair of victories over rival Calvin before sellout crowds.  In three
seasons at DeVos Fieldhouse, Hope has posted a 48-2 record.

The Flying Dutchmen, coached by Glenn Van Wieren, were champions of
the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) and finished
third in the nation among NCAA Division III teams.  Hope was 28-4
overall and 13-1 in conference games.

Other years when Hope led the nation in men's attendance were 1984,
1991, 1996, 1999, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Hope and Calvin helped the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic
Association (MIAA) to top all Division III conferences in home
attendance for the 17th consecutive year with an average of 1,035 fans
per game.

any updates from the civic tonight would be appreciated.  playing aquinas, which because of all the frosh departures and Lierman in lansing, had alums playing last thursday at the courthouse.

Their were 14 or 15 (reimink, bosch, tanis, osburn, vennema, bowser, jungling, snikkers, carter, boersma, canan, nelis, weise and ?) hope players last week so guys were only getting 10+ minutes on the floor.  not really the reason for playing in these leagues but oh well... Anyone enlighten me as to who the muscular lefty guard was?

Marcus Whittaker 6-4 or 6-5 (6-4 according to Detroit News)--Calvin

Fifth team all-state Class D.  Avg'd 18.8 pts per game.

Not much out there about Steve Cooper.

Here's a brief from the Cadillac News on Steven Cooper, noting his prowess as a scholar-athlete (but no stats).
