Beside Hoogeboom, who was the last Hope basketball player who left the team for educational or personal reasons?

Not sure I would say Evan Hare left for personal or educational reasons - he left for medical reasons

When I was in Holland - I remember quite the disappointment / disgust with a kid from Ohio named Tim Dennison - this would have been mid 80's - he had some big games his freshman year, but never molded in as a team player and left sometime during his sophomore year  -   FDF - do you remember him - am I correct?
The only thing not to be liked in Florida is no D3 hoops!!!

Going back over the years I recall quite a number of players at Calvin that have choosen to discontinue playing for a variety of reasons.  As a fan it is hard to see a good player (like Engelsma) decide to hang up the sport when you think of what might have been had they continued playing.  KVS likes to set his rotation pretty much in concrete by the end of pre-conference play so it would be very hard for a player like Van Harn to miss fall practice, the early season games, and than expect to be given a shot at getting playing time.  Perhaps the thinking is keep the year of eligibility, for a 5th year.

I think there's an even longer list of players if you include guys who either didn't play after their freshman year on JV or made JV but decided they didn't want to play and quit the team.

Did Tim Dykgraaf try out for Hope's team last fall?

There's also a long list of athletes that chose to play other sports who were very good players in high school.........or choose not to play any sport.  Heck even I fit into that category.  I was a pretty decent high school tennis player but had no interest in playing tennis in college.  Since my Fr. year I bet I've picked up a tennis racket 3 times.  I didn't even have a desire to play golf untill my sophomore year at Hope.

Interests change.

Even as Calvin's Josh Engelsma contemplates taking leave of basketball for loftier purposes (ministerial and matrimonial), the Knights may have found a replacement.  Ryan Scharps, a 6-7 power forward from Lake Worth (FL) Christian High School, recently changed his mind about accepting a basketball scholarship at NAIA Palm Beach Atlantic University and is coming to Calvin this fall as a freshman.  (Now there's a reversal of fortune you rarely see....) Scharps' high school numbers are impressive -- about 25 ppg and 9 rpg.

Ryan Scharps sounds like a very promising recruit for the Knights.  From your post you say "as Calvin's Josh Engelsma contemplates", does this mean it is not a done deal that he is leaving the team.  From previous posts it sounded like the decision had been 100% made.

I don't want to be too optimistic about Engelsma still playing but I'm now thinking of the Dumb & Dumber quote, "So you're saying theres a chance."

"Dumb and Dumber!"
There's a Dutch joke lurking somewhere nearby. :-*
I don't have the inside skinny on where Engelsma is right now in his thought process.  Could he change his mind about playing -- or not playing?  It happens all the time.
Right now he's focused on a couple of things that will occupy his attention far beyond two more years of intercollegiate athletic competition.  That's to be commended.

From what I know he left school during baseball season, around spring break.  His time in MIAA was a 'dark day' in the history of  Knight fans.  The Calvin students taunted him by chanting "Pedro" (in reference to his dark skin and black hair) and threw pizza boxes on the floor when he was introduced (in reference to an alleged robbery) .  Stupid stuff no one deserves.

Pizza boxes?  Oh come on....that's funny.

Scharps =  :)

I spoke with a friend (and fellow Hope alum) yesterday about the fact Scharps has changed his intentions re: where to study and play hoops.  This particular friend is on the administrative staff at Palm Beach U, and mentioned that he had just sat and talked with Scharps for a couple hours about 3 weeks ago.  I'm supposed to assure everyone that if he had known about Sharps' impending change of heart, there would have been some copious amounts of cajoling to carefully consider Hope over Calvin.   :)

From what I hear, Scharps is a great kid and someone any coach might be proud to mentor.  That's all well and good, but even so, I can't say i'll cheer much for him.  I guess the Calvin decision had something to do with some family ties to the school, so it was probably the inevitable choice even if he was wooed by any other MIAA school.

I'm looking forward to what the radio announcers are going to do when they have to deal with a Scharps and Sharples match-up.   :D ;)

I know Engelsma personally and talked with him and his decision has been made, he will NEVER play basketball for Calvin College again.
