$130,000 isn't even a percentage of total tuition paid by the student body.  From what I've seen Hope spends as much or more on lawn care.

Unless I am missing something.....I  find it hard to believe that K has the 2nd highest athletic budget in the conference.   I think it's obvious that schools report differently.  If done through a standardized process, I would imagine you would still find Hope #1 and maybe Adrian #2, or vice versa.

The numbers originally listed were *recruiting budgets*

athletic budgets...

06/07
1. Hope $1,303,577
2. Adrian $1,039,485

3. Albion $915,659
4. Trine $869,688
5. Alma $836,509
6. Kzoo $827,109
7. Calvin $761,505
8. Olivet $462,818

I would guess Adrian is much closer or even past Hope with the addition of Hockey last year.  But then I don't know if Hope's club hockey falls under the athletic departments budget.

Is this where we put the standard  "--Without football" next to Calvin.

Hope also leads the MIAA in concession supplies budgeted.

I had X amount of dollars budgeted for entertainment this summer, (concerts, vacations, etc.)  and spent X,XXX amount.......of course I report to no one.

Condiments aside, you blew your entertainment budget without making a trip to the lovely West Michigan lakeshore.  I'm working on forgiveness (and confessing jealousy).  ;)

So, how does the increased revenue from ticket sales at Hope (#1 in attendance) square with the amount spent on recruiting?

This thought piqued my interest, so I thought I would take a stab at predicting how much income Hope gets from ticket sales.  (This is of course my best guess).  Hope charges admission to 4 sports.  For each sport I will estimate 15% of the tickets were give aways (promotions, students, faculty, recruits)

Men's Basketball
Total attendance for last year was 51,276.  Subtract 15% freebies, and you get 43,585.
Figuring that the remaining tickets are 1/3 cushy seats ($10 ticket), 1/3 plastic seats ($8.00 ticket), and 1/3 bleacher ($6.00 ticket), I will use an average ticket price of $8.00.

43,585 x $8.00 = $348,680

Women's Basketball[/b]
Total attendance for last year was 20,366.  Subtract 15% freebies, and you get 17,311.
Figuring that the remaining tickets are 1/2 Reserved (around $3.33 a game) and 1/2 general admision ($5.00 a game), I will use an average ticket price of $4.15.

17,311 x $4.15 = $71,840.65

Volleyball
Total attendance for last year was 6,322.  Subtract 15% freebies, and you get 5,374.
Figuring that the remaining tickets are 1/2 Reserved (around $2.27 a game) and 1/2 general admision ($4.00 a game), I will use an average ticket price of $3.15.

5,374 x $3.15 = $16,928.10

Football
Total attendance for last year was 18,847.  Subtract 15% freebies, and you get 16,020.
Figuring that the remaining tickets are 1/2 Reserved ($7.00 a game) and 1/2 general admision ($5.00 a game), I will use an average ticket price of $6.00.

16,020 x $6.00 = $96,120

Grand Total (via FDF math)

$533,568.75

FDF  -  just out of curiosity, why in women's hoops and women's volleyball are Reserved seats priced lower than General admission?
The only thing not to be liked in Florida is no D3 hoops!!!

I would guess that they have a special price to try to increase the attendance at those events.

Hope paid $101,216 to an outside firm for "grounds management" in 2006.  If that was their entire lawn care budget (which I seriously doubt,) They would spend more on recruiting than lawn care!  ;D

Not-for-profit organizations are required to release their federal tax filings to the public.  You can find tons and tons of useless financial information about everything within a school.  You can access most every not-for-profit's filings at www.guidestar.org .  You need to register (its free) to actually see the actual filings.

GVW cracked Hope's top 5 paid non-officers for the first time ever this year.  Just a little tidbit...

#17017
06/07
1. Hope $1,303,577
2. Adrian $1,039,485--varsity hockey
3. Albion $915,659
4. Trine $869,688
5. Alma $836,509
6. Kzoo $827,109
7. Calvin $761,505--no football
8. Olivet $462,818

If you assume all of the athletic departments money comes from tuition then the per-student spending breaks down like this........based off numbers from Miaa.org (however acurate they may be) and tuition from some college search site based on 2008-09 numbers.

1. Adrian 944.99
2. Kalamazoo 670.27
3. Alma 643.47
4. Trine 621.21
5. Albion 475.67
6. Olivet 424.99
7. Hope 406.99
8. Calvin 176.52

As a percentage of tuition costs (excluding room and board for obvious reasons) and using this years tuition costs (08-09) vs 06-07 athletic budget numbers, because thats whats available.  I don't think the numbers would be terribly different.

1. Adrian 4.0%
2. Trine 2.6%
3. Alma 2.6%
4. Kalamazoo 2.2%
5. Olivet 2.1%
6. Albion 1.7%
7. Hope 1.6%
8. Calvin .8%

These numbers almost mirror in descending order by enrollment size

1. Adrian 1100 ~  4.0%
2. Trine 1400 ~ 2.6%
3. Alma 1300 ~ 2.6%
4. Kalamazoo 1234 ~ 2.2%
5. Olivet 1089 ~ 2.1%
6. Albion 1925 ~ 1.7%
7. Hope 3203 ~ 1.6%
8. Calvin 4314 ~ .8%

Only one number seems out of whack and that Adrian's, and they're the only MIAA school with a varsity hockey program and ice rink......neither can be cheap.  Otherwise the numbers across the league look fairly even.

Hope and Calvin are simply much bigger schools, Calvin's twice the size of #3 Albion, and nearly a third larger than #2 Hope.  While Hope has 1000 more students than Albion.  I would say Hope and Calvin have a big advantage in just scale.   If Hope and Calvin spent at the same percentage as Adrian right now their budgets  would be 3.2 million and 3.9 million respectively.  Its simply not necessary to spend that much on a D3 program.

Keep in mind the Adrian president has made it well known he's pushing athletics to generate enrollment, its really not much of a suprise they're spending more.......though I have to admit the 4% is more than I thought it would be.  It would be sort of interesting to see how these numbers have changed in the past few years.  Adrian is way above its 5 year average, which could very well be just the addition of hockey.......I don't know.  Hope, Kzoo, Calvin, Olivet, Trine and Adrian are all above their 5 year spending averages.  Only Alma and Albion are spending less.

All interesting stuff

I was mostly joking when I said that..........but yeah, they're a bit obsessed with the green grass.

They did play on Wednesday at 8:30 - this week.  It was a pretty good game versus Derek Griffin's new team - all guys from Muskegon I beleieve, including Callistus Eziukwu.  Hope won a close, good game by 1 point.

Next week Hope plays at 8:30 on Monday

I noticed this obsession years ago when hanging out at the Tree House.
