i don't think you can penalize a kid because he is currently playing a varsity sport.  It's not like he was working at Captain Sundae and couldn't get off work.  I'm sure the staff could reiterate to the current JV kids Logan's situation, give him a week just like the others, and make a decision.  Unlike the others who played (or should have been playing all fall) logan will be a bit rusty.  Or maybe he simply decided playing 2 sports in a school year was too much of a strain academically and will re-evaluate his plans next spring.

Logan worked out with the players this summer so I would expect him to be on the JV team once soccer is over.

I didn't mean to imply that he shouldn't make it, as I believe the guys on the JV would be happy to have him aboard. I was just curious if they have some policy regarding it.

Realist is talking about Hope #20 in the D3hoops.com preseason poll  http://d3hoops.com/top25/

Considering I'll need a program just to figure out who all these guys are, I find it highly unlikely Hope is a top 20 team right now.  I'm finding it difficult to even rationalize them being picked as the MIAA favorite (which they haven't).

If I recall correctly, you said the exact same thing last year about Hope. Hope was ranked #11 preseason last year and picked by the coaches, and I seem to remember some harumphing about both those choices. Granted it's a different team this year, but our need for a program will not determine one way or the other where Hope ranks and finishes.

It's interesting that Calvin has a player in the same situation: Tyler Vegter is on the varsity soccer team and is listed on the JV basketball team.  I don't know if he actually had to try out or was placed based on HS performance, reputation or some other factors.

I have heard that this is true about if a person is participating in a sport prior to tryouts the athlete can not try out.

I do think that the tryout occurs once the previous sports season has ended.

On the distaff side, Emily Ottenhoff played both varsity soccer and basketball for Calvin last year, and she is currently listed (without a jersey number) on this year's hoops roster. If Calvin's men's and women's soccer teams make long tournament runs this fall, neither she nor Vegter will join their basketball teams until December. There must have been football players who have joined their school's basketball team after tryouts were completed, though I admit no one comes to mind right now.

Certainly none from Calvin that I can recall...  ;)

Welcome to the board cml:  I think each school can pretty much decide how it wants to handle this situation.  I recall several b-ball players who left Salem to meet the track, and other teams on spring break trip.  Hope several years ago was able to add a mid-season transfer so schools must have some options.
Welcome back CCM:  Nice to hear the inside on the Calvin guys.  I look forward to a better year for the Knights this year.

Going undefeated since 1876 takes complete dedication, none of this two sport stuff.

Pretty hairy-chested to bring up football in a season when Calvin has exactly the same number of gridiron victories as the Dutchmen, and seven fewer losses. ;D ;) :D

when it comes to mid season tryouts, they do happen. When i played my fresh year we had a football player get a 2 or 3 (i can't recall the specifics) day tryout after football was over. i believe the same happened last year with Nelis (when he got here he got a tryout that is), and congrats to the Calvin football team for being just as competative as Hope's   i liked that one!

i think logan will go out for hoops after soccer is done, and be given a week to tryout and see where he fits (though with such a high # on varsity already, the handwriting may be on the wall). that seems to be the impression everybody has operated under all year.

First of all...

Why does hair migrate from a man's head to his torso??? This is a burning question!!!

Secondly...

There is no doubt, that Dean's underachieving Dutchman '08 football team would SPANK Calvin's squad!   ;) :-*

(and to keep this legit...) Go Hope Basketball!!! Woo Hoo!!!
