So . . . the Hope men's and women's BB teams are losing nearly an entire week from their preseason practice and any scrimmaging, yes?  Moreover, the training facilities are shut down.

Given the number of new players needing to be integrated into the men's team, might this impact their early season performance?  And might it mean that new players won't see as much initial playing time as they otherwise might have?  Or will they be doing something to make it up?

Hope College now closed until at least 6 am Wednesday.  Official count of 400 infected.

In my opinion, there is no way Ottawa County let us open on Wednesday morning.

I don't believe that the students are taking it seriously enough. Tough luck for those stuck in dorms...

Norovirus is NOT fun. Too bad for sports teams too!

I know both basketball teams, the volleyball team and both cross country teams are hurting because of it.

I might be missing something but what are the students to do. Ottawa County has shut down the school but not kicked kids off campus. All the County did was effectively make everyone hang out in dorms, which is probably the main place the germs were being exchanged anyways. If they wanted to stop the spread amongst students they needed to kick them off campus. I think the real goal was to keep it from spreading outside the campus.

Well, good news for the Hope volleyball team.  The MIAA was going to postpone naming the AQ until after the tournament on Tuesday, but the NCAA says they needed the name on Sunday.  So according to the MIAA manual, the regular season winner (Hope) is the AQ.  I would expect that Calvin will get a pool C bid as well.  This means the tournament will likely be cancelled.  Check the Hope website to be sure.

Calvin W volleyball  team received a pool C bid -- plays WI Whitewater (29-9); Hope plays Heidelberg (30-7). Symptoms for Rotavirus typically last 3-9 days. I don't know how long the 'lock downs' typically take.

Unless, they have changed the identification of the type of virus, the one affecting Hope is the Norovirus, a relatively fast moving(every pun intended) virus that clears out of the body within 24-48 hours. The infected person is still able to carry the germ up to 2 days after the last "evacuation".

CHN:  You are essentially correct.  When an outbreak occurs you want to limit the possible circle of potential victims.  To do this you lock down students, cancel away and home sports events, cancel classes etc.  The health officals really did not want students to leave campus as that widens the circle.
The basketball team will probably recover rather quickly from missing some practices, but not the same for volleyball, and other teams or individuals with tournament events this weekend.
One can't help but feel sorry for the teams and individuals that have worked so hard only to see their seasons (possibly) end on such an unpleasant note.

The Ottawa County Department of Health has just given Hope the go-ahead to re-open Wednesday at 6 a.m.  :)

Thought I would do a little statistical analysis of the teams, based on the returning players for each team.  I have calculated the percentage of last years stats these players bring with them.  I chose points, rebounds, assists, steals (the only thing I could use to assess defense) and minutes played.

Team     # Returning    Points   Rebounds      Assists Steals     Minutes
Adrian     6   48.3%   30.4%      47.2% 35.3%   46.5%
Albion     13   54.1%   42.3%      49.9% 60%   56.7%
Alma     6   52.3%   44.1%      32.4% 35.4%   40.3%
Calvin     10   65.5%   56.3%      71.7% 73.5%   68.1%
Hope     7   34.2%   34.8%      37.3% 45.8%   37.2%
Kalamazoo     12   43.2%   44.1%      53.4% 67.3%   50.8%
Olivet     6   50.1%   56.0%      34.7% 47.9%   44.4%
Trine     8   43.7%   38.3%      40.1% 40.8%   44.4%

FDF:  Thanks for crunching the numbers.  Based on those it is easier to see why many pick Calvin at the top.  I also think based on Hope's numbers it shows the respect last years fr., and this fr. class are generating.  With the events of the last few days it will be interesting to see how quickly the bball programs can get up to full speed.

Given what Albion did last season, they seem to be quite underrated for what they have returning.

As far as "adjusting" to Coach May, there is no adjustment really.  I'm not anticipating any difference in how Albion played under Turner vs under May.   Albion will still play tough D and try to control the tempo, this will put them in position to win (or lose) just about every game they play.

---------------------------------------------------------

League wise, it looks like there was alot more turnover than I expected.  If you assume all 8 teams carry 15 players, thats 120 spots.  According to FDF's numbers only 68 are returning or roughly 57%.

Okay, let me try, one more time, to explain my "adjusting" comment.  I don't expect any difference in how (the style of game) Albion will play.  And yes, I understand that May is not a new, unknown, quantity.  What I'm curious to see is how his personality, particularly during practice, for instance, or his personal perspective on leadership, when allowed to come to it's own fruition apart (to a greater or lesser degree) from Coach Turner, affects the morale, energy, and desire of the team.  For all I know it will be an exciting change for his players which will produce greater things than they were even able of producing last year.  Or, he might become a "head case" with his newfound authority and drive morale into the ground.  Not suggesting in the least that he would, or is capable of such a thing.  I'm just curious.  That's still allowed, right?   ;)
