I didn't see the game, but the on-line stats made it sound kind of ugly--for example, the fact that the knights were down by as much as 25 to a team that Cornerstone nearly tied. Also, and especially, that 24-rebound deficit.

However, I would point out that during the portion of the game in which Ferris State went on a 36-17 scoring run, Calvin was experimenting with different lineups and playing lots of different players.

I agree that it's interesting that Schnyders, Rodts, and Salo started over Zoerhof, Veltema, and Smith.

And I would suspect Calvin is going to struggle in any game when Caleb is 5-15 and Mantel is 4-10 from the field.

it appears at first glance that calvin attempted to have balance amongst their two groups, a little experience with both, some leadership and scoring as well.  There were many times during the course of last season where I thought Hope could have benefited from this by getting the frosh playing time without having to "lead".  Most of the time they were put out as a unit with no leadership and no "go to" guy.  With this type of subbing there will always be 2-3 starters on the floor, while allowing them to get some decent breaks rather than playing 10-14 minutes at a time.  Hope's plan obiviously worked in the short term so who am I to judge...

As talented as Hope's young kids are, they really didn't get much big game experience, with the exception of tanis, and that lack may induce some headaches for us fans the first half of the season.

Well stated. Making broad observations on a game I didn't see (an exhibition game at that) is always risky but risk taking is a part of board posting, so here goes.

A quick comparison of the Ferris box scores vs. Calvin and the one vs. Cornerstone, seems to reveal games that were played very differently by the two Ferris opponents. Cornerstone gave their starters major minutes (4 of 5 got over 30 in PT), only 10 players got on the floor and only two subs got into double digit minutes in playing time. It appears that Cornerstone chose to play the game as they would a regular season game. Calvin played 14 players and 10 of them got at least 10 minutes. Veldhouse had the most with 25 minutes. Calvin obviously played this game as more of a "true" exhibition than did Cornerstone.

Having said that, I find the rebound disparity to be disquieting. To get outrebounded 53-29 is getting hammered on the boards, and giving up 24 offensive rebounds is embarrassing--especially this Calvin team which has enough size and talent to avoid allowing such a wide difference. I know many coaches (I believe KVS included) think rebounding margin is the most significant statistic in basketball (I mildly disagree; I think shooting per centage is the most important stat, but that's a debate for another day). If Calvin struggles on the boards this year we will see an up and down Calvin squad that will frustrate fans all season long--kind of like last year.

CHN:  You are essentially correct.  When an outbreak occurs you want to limit the possible circle of potential victims.  To do this you lock down students, cancel away and home sports events, cancel classes etc.  The health officals really did not want students to leave campus as that widens the circle.
The basketball team will probably recover rather quickly from missing some practices, but not the same for volleyball, and other teams or individuals with tournament events this weekend.
One can't help but feel sorry for the teams and individuals that have worked so hard only to see their seasons (possibly) end on such an unpleasant note.

I ran into some Hope students over the weekend in Chicago.  They said that while no one ever used the word "quarantine" they were strongly encouraged to stay on campus.

49 combined fouls as well, a whistle every 48 seconds tends to lead to a lack of flow.

It's been a while since I've posted on here, but the anticipation of a new season has brought me back in.

It will be interesting to see how the norovirus affects the Hope team to start the year.  They already took their mandatory week off to start the season and will now have even fewer practices before the first game.  With a young team, it seems like they could have used all the practice they could get.

I've been thinking about this as well but the Norovirus probably only cost Hope 4 practices (Friday, Saturday, Monday and Tuesday) and there is a chance they would have not practiced Saturday anyways??? I think so long as the players didn't get seriously sick themselves so that they couldn't stay in shape Hope will be fine. (At least I don't think it'll be a real excuse for sloppy play).

And I wonder if anyone knows but I would think a clever team would have found ways to conduct open gyms at the Civic Center or a local gym (isn't there a place in Holland the team used to use for some practices? I feel like there used to be for some reason).

That may be, but many of the guys went home to get away from the germs.

Back in the good ole days they did...

When Hope played at the Civic Center (and so did Holland Christian), they would practice at Holland Christian on days when HC had games at the CC (this would be pre Dow Center, and occaisionaly after the Dow opened, when it was otherwise occupied)

Bowser lost 11 pounds because of the virus.  Must've hit him hard 'cause the kid doesn't have much to lose.  No idea who else on the team was affected/infected.
