Any growth in the televising of D3 games?  Presumably there are some local telecasts during the regular season - where do they do this?

Pat Coleman

Usually there are Mount Union games televised on tape delay -- I think out of Cleveland?

There is a smattering of student television. Ithaca is the most prominent, I believe they do all of the home games, and you can see them on the Net. Rowan has had games on its campus TV.

I think the advent of Penn Atlantic's video coverage of Division III basketball games last year is going to filter into the football area. We'll likely have many football games on streaming video to choose from.

If Calvin College would get a football team the Calvin/Hope game would be televised live.

I believe the DePauw/Wabash and Amherst/Williams games receive annual local/regional TV coverage along with numerous nationwide/worldwide hookups to select alumni groups, all broadcast live.

From Wooster's site it appears they will have web videocasts of home games.

Also the Indians have created their own cable network which right now broadcasts only Tribe games and previews.  Although it did broadcast one or maybe two hs baseball games played at Jacob's field.  That was on tape delay I believe.  It would be great if they would delayed broadcast some of the Ohio d3 games that are on local tv, cable, and web.  I haven't seen anything that suggests what plans they have for the channel after the baseball season.

The same holds for Cortland-Ithaca which runs on Time Warner Cable, albeit tape delayed.

Albright had a handful of games broadcast in the Philadelphia region live from their fancy new digs.

This subject hits close to home, since I work in television, having produced sports events since the mid-1980s. Another suggestion for anyone interested in seeing D3 games on the air is to check with the public access channel in your area. If they get enough response with the community, that may be enough for the staff to either roll out the production truck or send someone to shoot from the sidelines. If not, someone can also get certified at the station, and borrow a camera to shoot a game. Obviously, you'll need to gain permission from the SID of the school before moving forward.

The now-defunct (at least I haven't seen anything of it in a few years) Empire Sports Network in New York at one time offered live coverage (with tapes repeated at later dates) of some of Upstate New York's games. I know the crew was at Merrill Field on at least a couple of occasions during Jim Moretti's coaching era...but can't remember which games.

The AU Archives has a film clip of the CBS Saturday Evening News (with a dark-haired Dan Rather) that carried a Heywood Hale Broun feature all about AU's legendary Coach Alex Yunevich, at that time the "dean" of small college coaches in regard to years of service at one institution. It was nicely done.

It used to frustrate me trying to get all of the Upstate scores here in Mayberry. I'd flip from the Buffalo stations to the Rochester during 11 p.m. sportscasts (they didn't usually have anything yet at the 6 p.m. news) only to find Buffalo would mention only UB and Buff State, Rochester would usually list the UR, Fisher, Brockport and Hobart scores. No mention of Alfred unless the Saxons had played one of "their" teams.

D3football.com has changed all that. Now that we have the internet here (not understanding how it works doesn't stop me from using it), I can get ALL the scores within a few hours of all the games' completion! Hot diggity....

Time Warner Cable in Albany, NY has coverage of HS sports as well as local colleges. RPI/Union game was broadcast live last year. Hopefully more than 1 game is on this years schedule.

Hmmmm... Time Warner recently bought out our Alfred TV Cable System, thus ending a rare locally-owned operation that featured "the cable lady" randomly appearing at your door at 11:30 p.m. to personally deliver a hand-scribbled bill for the previous three years of what you'd thought was gratis TV cable service.

Our Time Warner is headquartered in Binghamton, a city devoid of D3 football.

While Binghamton is devoid of football, Morrisville begins play this year.  And Morrisville isn't too far from the Parlor City.

Having graduated from Morrisville College with an AAS in journalism a "few" years ago, I am tickled the Mustangs have emerged to D3 football. Ironically, while at Mooville, as Chimes sports editor, I suggested the college revive its football program...and as an AU fan I'm wondering when Alfred State makes the jump from NJCAA to NCAA. A president ago, A-State announced it would join the NCAA D3 ranks in 2005. Now that A-State's current president is leaving the end of this month, it will be interesting to see what happens.

As for proximity to Binghamton, Morrisville is much closer to the Syracuse and Utica markets.

What are the Athletic programs at Alfred State like?  How do they compare to Morrisville?

Fair point on the Binghamton-Syracuse-Utica point.  I lived in Binghamton for 4 years so I lean on that as my Upstate frame of reference.

And karma to you for the spiffy nickname which I will use frequently.  Having spent time in Chenango County, Mooville State is an appropriate nickname. :)

AUPepBand

Thanks for the karma!

As for Alfred State, it's comparable to Mooville... both started as ag schools and continue ag programs, joined SUNY in 1948 as ag and tech institutes, then ag and tech colleges along with Delhi, Canton, Farmingdale, Cobleskill. All junior colleges, SUNY looked at them as a liability and rather than face termination, they are re-inventing themselves by offering baccalaureate programs.

In athletics, A-State and Mooville met twice on the gridiron in 2005 and actually split! The Pioneers finished 5-5 and had six of their football players move on "to a higher level":
Matt Hewitt to University of Arkansas
Aric Pietsch and Joe Meyer to Georgetown (KY) College
Lennox Norville to Delaware State
Ashley Pierre and El-Amin to Rhode Island

As I said earlier, A-State was to make the jump into NCAA D3 in 2005. Thinking that got delayed by talks of merger with Alfred University, then Uma Gupta came in as president....not really sure where they're still on track for NCAA. But that could all change once a new president arrives. Gupta's out at the end of this month.

As for "Mooville," that was what we called our dear alma mater while students there. In fact, "MOOVILLE" was painted on a wall between the STUAC and the Power Tower (Administration Bldg.).

Seeing as I went to A-state and then transferred to SJF I might as well chime in.  The program as a whole is pretty good, lots of regional championships in track (one national championship in track-I was part of that team) and cross country.  The football program as a whole is finially begining to be consistant since Mick Caba took over my sophmore year there.  He's bringing in a lot of out of state kids like Morrisville did that make a difference.  I dont think Morrisville will be able to bring the type of athletes in that they used too.   There is no longer the chance at going to a higher level so I doubt they'll be getting the kids from florida any more.

A-state has had a couple of kids get invites to training camps in the NFL, the most recent being Lyonel Anderson a TE that has been singed by Cincy and GB.

Also COURAGE BOWL II (SJF vs UofR) will be broadcast live by FOX Rochester, with Pre-game, Half-time and Post-game commentaries by WROC TV-8 Sports Anchor, John Kucko and Play-by-Play with WROC TV-8's Thad Brown. In addition, COURAGE BOWL II will be heard on WYSL News 1040AM.
