Seeing as I went to A-state and then transferred to SJF I might as well chime in.  The program as a whole is pretty good, lots of regional championships in track (one national championship in track-I was part of that team) and cross country.

Track and cross country coach at A-State is Gary Moore, a classmate of mine at Alfred-Almond Central School....He was the third man on our 2-mile relay team (I was lead-off) that in 1974 set the school record at 8:40.5....the other teammates were my cousin and my neighbor, John Tuttle ('84 Olympic Marathoner). Gary runs a great program....kids like him, he stresses academics plus he just never quit running!

Coach Moore is a great guy, I was on that National Championship team of his.  He helped me out a lot while at A-State.  He didnt know much about throwing, but he could run forever.

AUPepBand:

What are the Athletic programs at Alfred State like?  How do they compare to Morrisville?

Fair point on the Binghamton-Syracuse-Utica point.  I lived in Binghamton for 4 years so I lean on that as my Upstate frame of reference.

And karma to you for the spiffy nickname which I will use frequently.  Having spent time in Chenango County, Mooville State is an appropriate nickname. :)

Yes it is.

frank uible

Was it the farmers of Chenango County, who in 1935 presented President Andrew Jackson with a 1400 pound wheel of cheese at the White House? Or was that Oswego County?

frank uible

Just reread my post - it was 1835 obviously.

Jonny Utah

Ive actually heard that story before about the cheese that took an hour to eat up by about 100 people but stunk up the whitehouse for 10 years...........

frank uible

If the cheese was 1400 pounds, then it took more than 100 people or more than one hour for it to be eaten, or alternatively Washington, D.C. was constipated for a month.

Frank I think you just hit the nail on the head, DC is still FOS.

DC is FOS.....and now we know that it all started with that Central NY 1400 lb. wheel of cheese delivered in 1835!

What effect will the AFCA break with the Hula Bowl have on D3 players getting into that game (and the TV exposure it brings)?

Can PC or anyone else provide some background on the break and what it means as a practical matter?  There was mention of the Hula Bowl considering "significant format changes" and of "philosophical differences over the future direction of the game" but what does that mean?

Pat Coleman

I don't know what the format changes were.

I believe it will mean fewer opportunities for D-III players in postseason senior bowl-type games. Hula Bowl has provided the vast majority of the postseason opportunities for D-III players the past five years or so.

It isn't good news. Perhaps the AFCA can get involved with another bowl game for 2008.

I'm not sure the Hula Bowl has been a great game in terms of marquee names in recent years. Perhaps that's why the bowl owners want to make changes? Not sure, just speculation on my part.
