Quote from: RFB on October 16, 2008, 03:31:46 AMMaybe if I'm lucky my little shorty will root against Redlands for the third consecutive game.

God, first your daughter and now your "little shorty" . . . though I'm not sure I would have copped to that on the board . . . but if Mrs. RFB can live with it, who are we to judge?

[Insert word play with innuendo including the words for "someone proficient in several foreign languages" and a word for "crafty, full of deceit, ingenious."]

My two cents:

Who the hell schedules Redlands for a HC game?  I PP or ULV was everyone's homecoming game this year (though query who the visitor in the ULV-PP matchup would choose).

I think Oxy is due for a letdown.  Plus, the injury to Haller may stall Oxy's chances.  Haller came in averaging 15 yards a carry (albeit in one game against CMS) but INCREASED his avg in the UOR game.

Oxy has given up fewer points in these first four games than they did in their final game last season.

I didn't think Maynard's decision to go for it on 4th down in the 1st Q was a bad one -- it just didn't work out.  Asking a D-III kicker to kick a 40-yarder is asking a lot.  I would only try that long a FG at this level if it was 4th and 6 or more.

What the..... Please tell me I didn't read the following sentence about the Tigers above in your last Post TigerSports. I'm hoping that it maybe just be me still hung over after last nights big dodger loss, but, what in the heck did the voice of the Tigers just say on this board.
Regardless of any injury, I would expect that the Voice of the Tigers would be hoping and rooting for Tigers in their quest of making it all the way in the SCIAC. I just find it odd that the Announcer of my school would just plain out put say this about my Tigers on the SCIAC. What a great supporter.  ??? I just hope the Men in Orange and Black don't read this, as I am sure they will be delighted in knowing that their annoucer has some doubts about them reaching and staying at the top of the SCIAC.      ???

Browneagle, to paraphrase the late Gil Stratton, who passed just this week, I call 'em as I see 'em.  OxyBob is right, I am not nor will I ever be a homer.  My "job" is to report what happened and give honest opinions, not to "root-root-root for the home team."

I don't think it takes a [USC] "brain surgeon" to think that a team that beat the best in the conference may have a letdown against a non-conference opponent.  And if Oxy does have a letdown because their announcer says they might have one, then there are problems bigger than the announcer not being a shill.

Congratulations to Oxy's Anthony Ostland for being named SCIAC player of the week.  From the Oxy Athletics website:

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 16, 2008) – For the first time in his four year career Anthony Ostland earned SCIAC Athlete of the Week honors for his performance on the football field during the week of October 6-12, 2008.

A senior captain from Las Cruces, NM, Ostland played an integral role in the Tigers' upset of the then #14 Redlands Bulldogs with a 28-15 win on the road Saturday, Oct. 11.

The linebacker paced the defense recording a game-high nine total tackles for the second time in as many weeks (9.0 against CMS with a sack for a loss of eight yards). He had three solo stops and six assists while sacking the UR quarterback 1.5 times and hurrying the QB two additional times. In the fourth quarter Ostland also forced a fumble that the Tigers were able to recover.

Overall this season Ostland has 19 total tackles.

The win got Occidental back onto the national ranking scene, earning the #24 spot as voted by D3football.com. The Tigers are currently 4-0 overall with a 2-0 SCIAC mark, tied atop the standings with Cal Lutheran University (3-1, 2-0).

Well, if the brain surgeon was from USC, s/he'd have good reason to expect a let down.

Oxy fans have better reason for confidence in their Tigers!

Chapman will be a tough opponent . . . Oxy will prevail.

Io Triumphe!

OXY Oswald

To give tigersports the benefit of the doubt here, recent Oxy regular season letdowns include:

2003 - Back to back losses to Pomona Pitzer and Redlands.  Pomona rallys in the 2nd half after knocking out Tyler Pao Pao and Oxy cannot recover.  The following week, driving in the redzone for what would-be the score that slammed the door on the Bulldogs, Oxy fumbles into the endzone.  The fumble is recovered by Redlands and they drive the length of the field for the go-ahead score.

Oxy finished 2nd in SCIAC at 4-2.  Redlands finished 1st at 5-1 (loss to CMS).

2004 - Opening loss to Chapman amid a quaterback controversy for the ages.
Justin Elway or Andy Collins.

Oxy won out and finished 1st in SCIAC at 6-0.  Chapman finished 4-5.

2007 - With a chance to squeeze into the playoffs on the line Oxy lays an egg against the Poets in a shootout.

Oxy finished 3rd in SCIAC at 4-2.   The Poets finished 4th at 3-3.
Go TIGERS!!!

Tough days for Tiger Football.

Is every loss a "letdown?"

Hard to see how an season opening loss can be a letdown.

Frankly, I don't see the Whittier loss last year as a "letdown" so much as a defensive clusterf***.

Maybe this is simply semantics.
