We also had those all important wine and cheese interests in France to protect.  A good reason why we should "grow baby grow"and strive for self reliance in the wine industry. ;D

All of Redlands starters must have been at bootcamp getting ready to enter the big one.

Your timing is off.  In 1914 essentially no one thought we'd ever get involved in The Great War. :-X

Notice I said getting ready. Our entry into WWI was inevitable and just a matter of time.

Since as late as 1916, Wilson won re-election on a platform of NOT joining the 'European' war, I salute the prescience of the Redland's boys! ;)

Their extra years of preparation may have greatly shortened the war. :D

You're correct he did win on a platform of nuetrality. It still did not change the fact that the United States would eventually be dragged into the war. Our stategic alliance with England and others would prove to be too important for us to sit it out.

In retrospect, true.  At the time almost no one was thinking that way (and certainly not building up the army - which in 1914 might have had a hard time defeating Spain in a replay of Cuba ;)).

Many think that Wilson's pledge of neutrality was BS (yours truly included), but anyone training since 1914 deserves major plaudits!  I salute the Redlands warriors! ;D

That's the beautiful thing about analyzing our past history, different viewpoints. That's why I was a history major in college and continue to be a history buff today.

That's great news to hear that another Oxy players has been given this honor for another week in a row. Best of Luck to the Men in Orange and Black as they tune-up and get ready for the Leo's.

Wow, a freshman playing backup QB. I guess UR doesn't have as much depth at that position as they used to have.

By the way, I'll go ahead a make this prediction here today, the stags walk away with the W against the Pups this weekend.

A Claremont win at Redlands at UR's Homecoming Game? Uh, no, that is not going to happen. If the Stags are lucky they won't get bageled.

Hey Anything can happen on any given Saturday.

"Anything can happen on any given Saturday." Good point. Great analysis. If Claremont can establish their running game, pound it on the ground, and take care of the football, they have a chance. The Stags should just go out there and execute and make plays on both sides of the ball. They need to play Claremont football and stick to their game plan. Of course, if CMS can't stop the big play, then they should throw their game plan out the window. When Claremont is marching down the field and they're knocking on the door, they've got to punch it in and take it to the big house, or else they'll have to settle for three. I think the Stags will also have to open up the passing lanes and air it out more. CMS QB Ryan Larsen likes to call his own number. He has great pocket presence and is a real gunslinger. If the Stags' offensive line can give Larsen some time to throw, he'll have all day back there, maybe an eternity or even all the time in the world, to check off his receivers and direct traffic. If Redlands flushes Larsen from the pocket you wonder how much punishment he can absorb. If Redlands can get to Larsen they will really clean his clock and ring his bell and put the lumber on him and he'll be slow getting up. Hopefully he won't telegraph his passes and throw it up for grabs into double-coverage. Unfortunately for CMS, Redlands' defensive line is quick off the ball and will assert itself. UR is tough in the red zone, and the Bulldogs usually win the game in the trenches. It's a game of field position, and eventually you'll see the frustration starting to set in on CMS. However, it should be a battle, and these guys are going to go at it mano a mano.

A few good scampers by the running backs will also contribute.

You can throw out all the records when these two get together.  I hope there aren't any extra-curricular activities.  It's always the second guy that gets penalized.  Ball security will be key.

I hope the Stags can avoid mental errors, given the superior numbers and size of their opponent.  They'll need to run to daylight so that the big play lightning strikes like it did against CLU.  This might set the perennial power back on its heels, and with a few good adjustments at the half, help the Stags maintain the element of surprise throughout the matchup.  This will quiet the home crowd and leave the dispirited Bulldogs foundering in their attempts to stave off the upset.

Like Bob, I think the CLU-Chapman game is the most intriguing game of the week, as it should be something of an indicator as to how the Kingsmen might fare against Oxy and Redlands.  The soccer scheduling gods have smiled down upon me, and I might even get to see most of the game.  So RFB, enjoy this time when your biggest problem is convincing your daughter to cheer for Redlands, because whether it's soccer or something else, before long your Saturdays will no longer belong to you.  :'(:D

OXYBOB

I was at  the Redlands/Whittier game. There is no way that Redlands freshman QB is their future. Zero, zip, nada.

Gazolly Gazump

I have heard that the Redlands coaches are very good salesmen...they get a large number of kids to enroll at UR....kids who are led to believe they are going to be playing football -  rumor has it that this year after pre-season camp they cut 50+ boys who were led to believe they'd be part of the UR team prior to enrolling.  Too late to transfer, and UR gets their Fall tuition $.

Even some of the boys who "made" the active roster asked to be taken off of it shortly afterward due to some Wacky position coaches, and the fact that football wasn't "fun" at Redlands.

From what I can see, UR has a great tradition of football excellence, but may need to guard their reputation more closely if they want to keep getting the recruits.
