It should be awesome to watch some SCIAC football, eat some pizza from the Warehouse and try to balance this hang over with a beer or two from T. Phillips (or the local circle K).

Brown bag a tall boy from circle K or grab a brew at warehouse, Phillips is a rip off. I wish good old Nick's was still there.

Call me crazy here but the Cal Lu "D" is for real!  They held Chapman to a total of 139 yards in the 16-9 win today.  Wow, lets see what they can do against Oxy and Redlands.

Tigers Prevail Over Leopards

The University of La Verne could not overcome a strong first-half performance by Occidental College as the visiting Tigers defeated the Leopards 40-27 in SCIAC action Saturday at Ortmayer Stadium.

Occidental took a commanding 34-0 lead into intermission before La Verne responded with 27 second-half points - including 21 in the final quarter - on the Leopards final home game of the 2008 campaign.

Nearly everything went right for the 20th ranked Tigers (6-0, 3-0 SCIAC) in the opening 30 minutes as they amassed 318 yards and 12 first downs on offense while only yielding 47 yards for the Leopards.  Oxy scored a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter and added three touchdowns and a field goal in the second quarter to grab a commanding lead at the break.

The Leopard offense finally came to life in the second half, posting 352 yards in the final 30 minutes of action en route to four touchdowns.  Quarterback Christian Winnewisser came off the bench to spark the Leopard attack by passing for 303 yards while accounting for each of the four La Verne scores.

Winnewisser got La Verne on the board midway through the third quarter on a 17-yard pass to Kenneth Chapman to cap an 8-play, 80-yard drive.  The Leopards (1-5, 1-3) scored on consecutive drives early in the fourth on a 15-yard scoring pass to Winnewisser to John Ausman along with a 1-yard rush from Winnewisser to close the deficit to 40-20 with 11:41 remaining.   Winnewisser's fourth touchdown occurred in the final minute on a 36-yard scoring toss to Andrew Rubel to provide the game's final score.

Oxy quarterback Justin Goltz led the way for the Tigers, passing for 313 yards on the day, including 247 in the first half.  Goltz connected with receiver Chris Washington for three scores.  Washington caught 9 passes for 175 yards.  Randall Hook paced the Tiger ground game with 95 yards on 16 carries.

Leopard receiver Phi Van Le caught 5 passes for a team-high 83 yards while fellow senior Charles had 8 grabs for 52 yards.

La Verne hits the road next week to begin a three-game road swing.  The Leopards face  Whittier next Saturday for a 7 pm kickoff.

Yup, 40-27 was the final . . . everybody played for Oxy.  The kid who came off the bench for LaVerne did a really good job.  Saw OB, missed you BrownE . . . bummer.

Oxy is going to have to step it up for the upcoming game at Cal Lu.

QuoteI took your karma point away because your first post was somewhat tacky.  I have now changed it to a plus now that I have considered the following.

Foxy Poster....please inform how to apply smite or applaud twice inside 24 hours. I will be then abble to run rampant.

You can't give two of the same karma points within 24 hours, but you can change your mind.

For example say snoopy makes one of his rare good posts, and I give him a karma point to encourage more good ones.  He would have a +1.

If he makes one of his normal posts within 24 hours I can give him a smite..  His plus 1 would not then be zero, it would go to minus one as if my first action was a mistake. :-[

Eyewitness report from La Verne...

Oxy 40, La Verne 27

Phew, it was hot out there! I felt like an ant being chased by a little kid with a magnifying glass.

The Tigers rolled to a 40-6 lead after 3 quarters. The Oxy subs got in a full quarter of work. Oxy's dinged-up starters were all rested, and no one got hurt. Justin Goltz played another excellent game. The Washington brothers were all over the field. Are there any more of them at home? Randall Hook looked great.

Nice to see Sabretooth and Browneagle at the game.

Should be a great game next week in Thousand Oaks.

OxyBob
After drinking late last night and sitting under the blistering sun with the Oxy faithful, this young buck had to retrieve after the first half. As expected the Men in orange and black went to La Verne to take care of business and did so real quick. Any mistakes that the Tigers had committed were immidately taken care of by the players and staff. In the end, I think we witnessed how good Oxy really can be when everything clicks right.
(geeze, i never knew the visitors stands were that close to the players/coaches area. I could hear Coach Dob and the Line making adjustments right in front of me).

Great to see old alum's (OxyBob from class of 1804'. Just kidding Bob) and recent alums at the game (my teammates and mentors from the 00' through 02' Oxy years.). I definately enjoyed stepping back on campus and getting the opportunity to watch some SCIAC football with Teammates and D3 posters. Of course this was better then sitting in on a 8 hour class on a saturday morning/afternoon and not being able to watch some football like I did in the past. (Sorry we never got to cross paths Tooth).

Congrats again to The Tigers, Hens and Panthers on their big wins this afternoon.

Tigers Tame Leopards in Battle of the Cats

LA VERNE, Calif.(Oct. 25, 2008) –  With the offense accumulating 318 yards of offense in the first half, including four touchdowns and two field goals, and the Tigers defense shutting the University of La Verne down, # 20 Occidental College clinched a 40-27 victory at Ortmayer Stadium to remain undefeated at 6-0 overall and 3-0 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

On the second drive of the first half, en route to the first score of the game, senior quarterback Justin Goltz connected with junior wide receiver Chris Washington for the longest completion of the game, marking the second longest pass of the season, at 56-yards. Moments later Bryan Fiorito would gain one yard and a touchdown to put the Tigers on the board.

The next offensive series also ended with a touchdown when Goltz again found C. Washington for an eight-yard TD pass. Neil Martin finished off both plays, putting Oxy up 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

During the second quarter Martin added 33 and 22 yard field goals to his repertoire of scoring with two more touchdowns sandwiched between the kicks. With 5:12 to play in the first half Fiorito used a six-yard scamper to land in the end zone for the second time of the day before C. Washington caught a 26-yard pass three minutes later to match Fiorito with two TDs in the opening stanza.

Occidental's defense held the Leopards to just 47 yards during the opening half with Patrick Sarkissian leading the pack with six total tackles, three for a loss of 11 yards, including a sack for a loss of nine while Daniel Tromello also had a big first half coming up with four stops and a 24-yard interception. Each of them broke up a play as well.

La Verne showed life in the second half scoring 27 points on four touchdowns, three of which came in the final quarter of play. Leopards quarterback Christian Winnewisser came off the bench to accumulate 303 passing yards for three TDs adding a fourth score by foot on a one-yard run.

The final Oxy scoring came in the third quarter when Goltz connected with C. Washington in the end zone for the third time in the game on a 23-yard pass.

Goltz, who earned SCIAC Athlete of the Week honors for his performance against Chapman, finished 20-for-35 passing for 313 yards with no interceptions while adding 23 yards on the ground in just three quarters of play. His favorite target today was C.Washington who caught nine passes for 175 yards. Additionally C. Washington added a kickoff return for 29 yards and four punt returns for a total of 19 yards, amassing 223 all-purpose yards in the game. Trevor Duessen and Jordan Washington each caught three passes for 31 yards with their longest at 18 and 16 yards, respectively.

J. Washington was also instrumental on kick returns carrying the ball three time for 74 total yards. He finished with 114 all-purpose yards.

ULV's Kenneth Chapman tallied 105 all purpose yards, with 88 coming on kick returns, to lead the Leopards.

On the ground freshman Randall Hook paced the Tiger accumulating 95 yards on 16 carries with his longest gain 29 yards.

Thirty-three different Tigers were effective on defense either recording a tackle or breaking up a play. Dillon Tucker tied Sarkissian (who only played one half) with six tackles in the game to lead the Tigers. Ayrton Bates and Cory Suess each finished with five while Thomas Bergstrom and Tromello (who only played one half) recorded four apiece. John Hansbrough forced a fumble while Kevin May recovered a fumble. Brandon Ortega was responsible for the second sack of the game, pushing the Leos back two yards.

The kicking game was again led by freshman Joshua Mun who booted the ball deep for Oxy in eight kickoff opportunities. Alex Groh punted four times for 180 yards with his longest punt measured at 61 yards. He had one punt inside the 20 and one touchback.

Kyle Kazarian also took some snaps under center, finishing 2-for-6 passing, but was picked off once, by Ryan Baranek.

Next Saturday, Nov. 1 the Tigers will be on the road for the fourth consecutive week as they travel to Thousand Oaks for a conference showdown with Cal Lutheran (5-1) who is also undefeated at 3-0 in SCIAC play. Kick off is slated for 1:00 p.m. at Mt. Clef Stadium.

Agreed . . . although I got the sense the Tiger's were a bit sluggish in only their second day game of the season and were playing at 3/4 speed at best.
