Here are the statistics leaders through 8 games:

Scoring offense: Redlands 38.8 ppg, Oxy 38.0
Oxy will probably be leading in all of the offensive categories after this weekend when the Tigers reclaim The Shoes while Redlands has to face that tough CLU defense.

CLU is going to have a real tough time moving the ball against Redlands, and the Bulldogs have more weapons on offense than the Kingsmen. That will be a good game in contrast to the Oxy-Whittier game. Unless the Poets are planning on reactivating Josh Scurlock, Myron Claxton and his shoes, and Don Coryell, it's going to be a long day for Whittier. Last season both teams scored over 60; this time only one might.

I don't know, I have a funny feeling about this weekend..then again, it could be the flu.

What do you guys think about the IIAC playoff represenative heading out to SoCal for a first round match up?

Back in 2004 when Buena Vistas was on the cusp of winning the conference, we were told that we were going to head to OXY for the first round.

With Stevens Point, Whitewater, Monmouth, and SJU all making the field at this time, that leaves Oxy, Wartburg, Wilamette, and a team to be named to make the field.

Redlands would have to get in for that to happen and it won't. I have nothing against Redlands but they won't be in. Also worth nothing is that Stevens Point is NOT in as yet and with a loss they may not make it having played only 7 "in region" games.

Klopenhiemer,

I think Carleton may have a say in this.  SJU is not a lock yet.  UWSP is not a lock either.  If they win they have the AQ  The only teams I know are a lock is Wartburg, Willamette, Monmouth, and Oxy.

I'd love for Oxy to host again.  I don't know a lot about Wartburg, from a quick look at the conference site I'd think it would match up each teams precieved strength versus the other's precieved weakness:

Oxy's strong run game / Wartburg's questionable run defense  &  Oxy's secondary / Wartburg's passing attack.

I'd like to see UWSP lose this week (which is possible considering their only loss is to UW-River Falls, whom UW-Lacrosse blew out last week -- perhaps we're looking at a different UW-Lacrosse team than the one that started the season 0-5) giving the WIAC AQ to UWW and open up another spot for a team like Redlands.  This is still assuming the NCAA won't blow it in that scenario and match up UR/Oxy in a rematch in Eagle Rock.
Go TIGERS!!!

First off, I have to say that, unlike this newbie OxyBob character, I am far from willing to make Redlands over CLU my "Lock of the Week." ;)  Obviously, the CLU D will need to play large, but that's something they've done all season.  If the offense can hang in there and keep things close I like CLU's chances.  Should be a great game, I am disappointed I'll miss it, although with two kids playing soccer it's almost impossible to get out to the Runner from T.O. for a day game.

Second, I think it's interesting the way in which the CLU-Willamette game is playing such a huge role in the unfolding playoff picture.  I was not at the game, so I'll eagerly defer to others on this, but from what I've read and heard from others that were there, it's pretty clear the game turned around on a 4-5 play stretch in the middle of the 3rd quarter in which the Bearcats scored 14 points on two CLU turnovers.  You can see it here, just scroll down to the middle of the 3rd.  Those fourteen points provided the margin of victory (the Bearcats did take a knee near the CLU goal line at the end of the game), and it seems like that margin is feeding the perception that the NWC is the superior conference, therefore Willamette is the higher ranked team and deserves to host in the first round.

I don't doubt that the Bearcats are a good team, and am impressed by the way they have bounced back this year under Coach Speckman.  I'd love to see the NCAA fly both the IIAC champ and a pool C from one of the other conferences out to the west coast.  I have also been around long enough to know that's not likely, and either the SCIAC or NWC champ will be forced to travel.  We West Coasters all know the huge disadvantages of traveling. ;)

Here are some comparative conference stats for Redlands and CLU:

Scoring offense: Redlands 41.0, Cal Lutheran 31.4
Scoring defense: Cal Lutheran 12.2, Redlands 12.6
Pass offense: Cal Lutheran 239.2, Redlands 204.2
Pass defense: Redlands 129.4, Cal Lutheran 139.6
Rushing offense: Redlands 201.0, Cal Lutheran 108.2
Rushing defense: Redlands 78.6, Cal Lutheran 105.4
Total offense: Redlands 405.2, Cal Lutheran 347.4
Total defense: Redlands 208.0, Cal Lutheran 245.0
Pass efficiency: Cal Lutheran 126.6, Redlands 122.7
Pass efficiency defense: Cal Lutheran 74.4, Redlands 81.9

Stat-wise, advantage Redlands. The Bulldogs also have two other things going for them: They are playing at home and can still make the playoffs. It ain't a lock, but all indicators point to a UR victory.

snoop dawg

scandi,

I only saw CLU play Oxy and simply was not impressed with their ability to pass the ball.  If they can't pass against UR, I think they are in for a long day.  I know it isn't fair to judge the offense on one game but the other SCIAC  teams they played ahve weak defenses and how CLU  did against them mayy not be a real indicator of their ability to move the ball.

If you have seen them play, I am curious to know what you think of their pass offense.  It is strange because while at Chaminade, McEnroe was a pass first coach.  Now, it seems he is intent on running.  Is that because that is their strong point.  I looked at the stats but they can be very misleading.

I am curious to hear your take.

Also, while I have driven through the CLU  campus many times, I had never notice the building named, ( I think)Scandinavian house.  Thus the screen name?

I'm a long time reader and first time poster. I think CLU has a good chance for a win on Saturday against Redlands because of their defense. CLU has been playing a single-gap defense, they haven't given up any big plays, and they've kept good pressure on the quarterback. Redlands is a good team but if the CLU defense keeps them in the game like they did against Oxy then CLU will have a good chance to win it.

I saw both games CLU played against Willamette and Occidental. I'd give a slight edge to Willamette especially if the game between them is played at Willamette and its cold and rainy. Oxy seemed to have some problems with a wet ball on a wet field against CLU. Willamette is big and fast and runs the ball really well, but Oxy has a better pass attack and I think is overall better balanced. Oxy also has an incredible punter which could really be big in a close game. I have seen Oxy play 3 times this year and I think they can play with anyone. They are very well coached and disciplined. Their defense takes a lot of risks and sometimes they get burned but from what I've seen it usually pays off for them. Like I said I'd give a slight edge to Willamette but it'll be a heck of a game if theyplay eachother.

I am a bit late to the party with this but I wanted to comment that I agree 100% with the poster OneTimeWonder about the outrageous comment made by snoop dawg to OxyBob. In my industry that comment would have been taken very seriously. An investigation would have been instituted at at a minimum snoop dawg would have been subject to counseling and at some point likely would have found himself in a room being spoken to by a police detective. snoop dawg was a real jerk for making that comment. From reading here I see that snoop dawg is a lawyer. Well when you have a minute or two take a look at CA Penal Code sec 422 and then think the next time you're going to open your yap. On a personal note I met OxyBob about 15 years ago when I was with the athletics department of a SCIAC school with which I still have close ties.I've seen him many times at SCIAC events particularly basketball games because I'm a b-ball junkielike he is. There's not a nicer funnier or more knowledgeable guy to hang with at a game. snoop dawg should only be so lucky. By the way snoop dawg I still have contacts at Uof R and believe me when I tell you that they think you're the biggest clown who ever came down the pike.
