Fear the Poet

We don't have have any knowledge of any shake-ups in the coaching staff for our beloved Poets.

Surprisingly enough, they don't include me in any decision making or ask for my opinions. :)

All I can say is that we are confident that Coach Hammer will get this thing going. It was certainly a tough year, but we have confidence that it will be back on track.

When Hammer took over, there was something like 35 guys on the roster. He has recruited well and the Poets came to camp this year with over 100 players. There is alot of young talent on the team.

The AD and President of Whittier College are huge supporters of the Athletic programs and are committed to turning the tradition of Whittier Athletics into a winning one. Look at all the improvements that have been made on campus over the past two years. New football field and press box, revamped Baseball field and Tennis courts,etc....

The Ricardos' support the staff all the way!!

GO POETS!!!   and welcome to the board Johnny.

ps- Good Luck to Oxy in the playoffs..lets do the sciac proud!!!

for Dick Kaiser's appearance.  Interesting insight on the committee's views into the tourney and hosts Eric Ren and Frank Rossi with some great questions to the NCAA d3 seleciton Com. Chair.

I listened to Dick Kaiser's explanation. Same BS, different season. All of the regional rankings and other NCAA rigmarole which goes into picking the 32 tournament teams is nonsense. It's difficult to take anything the tournament committee says seriously when one-half of their bracket is seeded and the other half isn't.

I have attended many Whittier games as a friend of mine has a son who plays for Whittier College. I will not speculate on anyone's job for a number of reasons.  My friends son speaks highly of them as people.

My view from the cheap seats

There is no excuse for leaving the cupboard bare when it comes to QB's. The sophomore starter this year who got hurt throws a nice ball, has decent running speed but no moves. IMO he is to short to play QB in college. Of the freshmen QB's who played, two are as small or smaller than the sophomore. You can talk all you want, IMO they cannot play at this level. They are not college level players just on size alone. They are no where near the level of Scurlock and he could not muster a winning season. One had a good game stat wise, but believe me, the stats are deceptive. While there is luck involved in sports, luck was the reason for most of the completions. The next two games proved that.

They have two other freshmen QB's. One is OK sized with good coordination but lacks experience to play at this level at this time. Has no idea about reads, looking off receivers etc. The tallest of the freshmen QB's might get it done way down the road, but needs much work physically and game prep wise. None of them were ready for this year. IMO none will do the job next year. The shorter ones will never be able to do the job and should be moved to other positions. You cannot throw and complete to something on a regular basis you cannot see. Defenses know this.

Not bagging on the kids but this isn't park and rec where everyone plays. The team will only suffer if the status quo remains. Unless they get a QB transfer they will not improve. It is that simple

They have no one close to replacing running back #6 for next year. No passing and no running game gets you another season likes this one, and another one and another one

Defense is fair with the exception of most of the DB's. Also the zone is so predictable and so beatable, game after game after game. Need some kids who can play man on man.

Special teams were a mess with no one stepping up to catch and return punts and kick offs. There were numerous times the failure to properly field a kick left the team in horrible field position.

The kicker is good on punts but those pooch kicks which leaves the opposition starting off at the 40 or 50 time after time has got to change.

It doesn't matter how many kids you have on the sidelines if most cannot play. Just a few posts ago someone mentioned the numbers. I'll take quality over quantity any day. How many games has Whittier lost these past years against teams with rosters under 50? One year they lost to a SCIAC team that had under 40 players. Also how can you say the team has a lot of young talent when the record continues to speak for itself? Either Whittier has the horses or they don't. You can take it from there. The we are young, wait until next year mantra is just plain pass the buck BS.

Not enough hard hitters, athletic ability or football sense. Also waayy to many small, slow players. I am not a tall person, but on the field I am taller than 90% of the Whittier players.  While there are some great small players, that will not cut it when most of your team is undersized....and slow

I heard this comment which I believe is true and a major problem at Whittier.  A parent said the team has to many kids that play football, but are not football players.

OxyBob is not my favorite poster, but concerning Whittier Football IMO he is right on.

Whew,

Just back from the long trip to SO Cal and wanted to say Great Job on the season, OXY, and can't wait till Salem. (Oregon first)  I am very proud of them and what they have accomplished. Work hard so you can show the boys in Willamette and the NWC what SCIAC is about!

Nice to meet FTP and DAW at Patterson! Keep LR's spirits up and track and field is close! With support from parents like you, he will always be fine.

Children will soon forget your presents. They will always remember your presence.

DPS,

Just curious on your opinion.  What height do you have to be to play QB.

Tall enough to see your receivers and or slick enough to evade and throw on the run. Throwing rainbows to a general area time after time just doesn't cut it. Sure you get can lucky every so often, but.....

5'3" -5"5" will not get it done 99% of the time.....That 1% can make it happen. IMO we are not talking the 1% here.

thanks growler..it was a pleasure meeting you as well. Big #52 played well. He is a heck of a player. I look forward to next season when LR gets to go nose to nose with him.

Congrats to the Oxy team and especially the seniors for a great season that will hopefully continue for a few more weeks. :)

I believe the Society of one created a post that was most enjoyable to read because it contained honesty hard to put into words for most of us.

OK, Scurlock was not all that tall, was he? He COULD move.

I went to the Cal Lutheran vs. Redlands game, and it was a defensive battle to the end. The CLU defense was outstanding when it counted. They returned one interception for a td and made a bunch of crucial stops in the fourth quarter.

After CLU took the 24-17 with about 10 minutes to go CLU turned back three UR drives. Eric Lopes second interception with 1:30 to go on the 17 on 4th down was a killer. CLU also got to Steve Smith and sacked him a handful of times.

CLU has a solid team but couldn't get over the hump against Oxy and Willamette. I agree with the poster named CalCat who said that Redlands missed Dan Selway. Steve Smith played well for UR when Selway went down but he didn't have Selway's quickness and experience. Good luck to Oxy next Saturday. Oxy and Willamette look like they're pretty even but I give Willamette an edge since they are playing at home and it's probably going to be cold and wet.

I also agree thatit doesn't make a heck of a lot of sense to go to the trouble to seed 32 teams in 4 regional playoff brackets if you're not going to seed all of the brackets. Pretty dumb way to do it if you ask me.

If I intended to threaten someone do you really think I would post it on a message board?

I pretended to be someone else other than who I really am on this board and was exposed.

I don't know why you would post a threat like you did on a message board nor do I know why you pretended to be someone else nor do I know why you went all over the world wide web making a fool out of yourself. I am sure there is a technical psychological term/diagnosis for your problem. Go ask a shrink what it is.

Hey, dude, seriously, stop beating the dead horse. If you can't be bothered to respond to it in five days then you need to let it go. Thanks.

I've noticed in past years that blowouts happen even between closely seeded teams.  Maybe the NCAA should just be honest and make up the brackets based strictly on cost and not assign a seeding number.  I guess seeds do get you a home field though.

Scurlock wasn't big, didn't have an excetional arm, was very quick and evasive and always seemed to do his part to win the game for his team. He was solid.  I remember the Whit-UR game at Whit in 2006, he gave the UR defense fits.

Ours is a minor (and one-year) complaint compared with yours, but it really sucks that the NCAA is so blatantly cheap and willing to say 'screw the seeds'.

I would expect a liberal to say this ;)  Sorry the NCAA has a fiscal policy and is not interested in spending freely even if a major deficit is the result.  Sorry, I guess I had an Obama moment after watching him on 60 minutes last night.
