"Does accepting transfer students, including athletes, avoid some of this grades/board scores fixation"?

Possibly.

However on the flip side...What pressure could a desperate to win coach, who has brought with him high expectations, has basically a new stadium, has been given everything including the kitchen sink....and a desire IMO to coach at a level higher than Whittier put on the school to bring in players though good and through JC able to meet the grade requirements, are bad actors?

We will soon find out.

Do you have some kind of personal beef with Coach Hammer? ???

Seems like his beef is with JC players...

If a kid academically qualifies and wants to pay Private School tuition rates, who is anyone to criticize if that kid goes to play D3 football?

Best to LR . . . congrats on raising a kid smart enough to know himself and to make a gutsy decision like that  . . . glad that he's happy at school and that things are going well.

best,

tooth

Yeah, what my articulate buddy Tooth said. That goes for me, too.
There are other aspects of life that can take precedence over football. That may mean giving up playing, or even transferring to another school for academic reasons. LR sounds like he has a good head on his shoulders.

You'll get your football fix by watching him coach, keeping up with the Poets, and checking in here.

I wish your family the best.

Speaking of the Poets.... Rumor has it Coach Hammer brought in a LARGE number of JUCO transfers.  After 4 years of his recruiting, Hammer has to bring in over two dozen JC players to try and turn the program around?

If true, this changes the way business is done in the SCIAC...and IMO not good for the league.

Dear Dead Poet Society,

I apologize for bringing down the quality of the SCIAC by transferring from Oregon to Oxy.

Sincerely,

Andy Collins

Must be late for you. Last time I checked Oregon was not a JC....and if I recall correctly, Collins was not a player with baggage, and Oxy did not have anywhere near two dozen or more JC transfers on their football roster.

BTW OxyBob  You might  have these stats somewhere handy....If you do can you list the JC transfers from last year (or this year if available) for the SCIAC? Anyone over two dozen?

Thanks

thanks..the closer football comes, the more of a wierd feeling it is not watching LR play, but as you said, we'll focus the attention elsewhere. :)

I looked at Whittier's spring roster and I see one JC transfer from Mt. Sac, not two dozen or more.

According to its catalog, WC has standards for transfer students. Are you saying that Coach Hammer has some magical way of waiving those requirements to get transfer players into WC?

No, I can't. I do know that Daniel Tromello, who transferred to Oxy from Moorpark College, was first team all-SCIAC at DB. Do you have a problem with that?

as is the case will all sciac schools, getting transfers isnt as easy as asking them. Academic standards and cost make it very difficult. That and the money to give to potential players is at a minimum right now.

As for Whittier, we have made great strides over the past couple of years with facility upgrades on not only the football field, but baseball and tennis and bringing in student athletes.  It is a process, but the future is bright.

next up, new pool facility and softball fields. Our AD, Robert Coleman gets alot of credit for aggressivly going after improvements and looking for new ways to compete. The President of the College is also 100% in support of all athletics, which wasnt always the case with previous preidents.

Not bagging on the kids but this isn't park and rec where everyone plays. The team will only suffer if the status quo remains. Unless they get a QB transfer they will not improve. It is that simple

Make up your mind.

OxyBob is not my favorite poster, but concerning Whittier Football IMO he is right on.

I am my favorite poster, which is all that counts.

Did I miss the "Players With Baggage" rankings somewhere? I wasn't aware that was quantifiable and something you could know in advance.

Thanks Tooth!!
LR thought long and hard about his decision and ultimately this was the best choice for him.  He's definately going to miss playing and it was a hard decision but something he felt very strongly about.  There were a few things that came into play with his decision but the biggest was his future and his upcoming year / studies.  He's starting his Junior year and he's a Math major with a chem minor.  This semester he has a full load of classes all of which are Math related and wants to focus on them. As we stated earlier FTP and I couldn't be prouder.

Also Thanks everyone for the kind words.

Bob Bob Bob.. Nowhere did I state I was against JC players or transfers from any college. My original post was the number of JC transfers, how that is different from what SCIAC has done for at least as long as I have followed it as well as reasons I feel the school maybe going that way.

Now if the 24-30 number turns out to be true...or anywhere close...that IS a change.

As far as one player on the spring roster...check again. I believe the one defensive lineman graduated (a good kid and player) That leaves three returning from last year...I missed one.

Anyone attending Whittier for the first time this fall would not have been on the spring roster as they would have been at their previous schools.

You are correct. The President and AD get great credit for the huge change, not only in the fantastic facilities upgrade but in the atmosphere of the entire college.  The change in the 6 or so years I have visited the campus watching games is truly amazing.

I wish your family the best. It was enjoyable watching #63 play the game IMO how it is supposed to be played. Hard, clean and treating the game, officals, opponents and teammates with respect.
