Congrats Poets.  Offense looked good. Solid play calling, line, QB and rushing. Defense still needs some work.

Sul Ross fumbled away the go ahead score on Whittier's 23 late in the game.

Overall a good win and a nice way to start off the season.

Tough break for the Kingsmen but a 7 pt road loss to an '08 NCAA team isn't anything to be discouraged over.

Did he say we were? ???

CLU is a tough football team, and the game might have turned out differently if the Kingsmen wide receivers hadn't been literally dropping the ball.  It's tough to play your season opener against a team that already has a game under their belt, and I think that showed a couple of times today.  That being said, Toilolo is a solid QB and the CLU defense could be a really great unit once they gel a little more.

Best of luck to the Kingsmen from everyone up in Salem.

There's a nice write-up in the paper about Redlands' 36-3 win over East Texas Baptist.

I also read about Pomona's 20-14 overtime win against Puget Sound. The Sagehens scored the winning touchdown on a fake field goal.

The local Oregon paper had all of the details about Willamette's 20-13 win over CLU.

There was a blurb about Claremont's 22-7 victory over Lewis & Clark.

An article in another paper reported about La Verne's 21-9 loss to Whitworth.

I didn't see anything about Whittier's win over Sul Ross State. Maybe tomorrow.

Thank-you. That post has me chuckling.

BTW, here we come.

Note, although Chapman is not a member of the SCIAC, I don't know where else to post!

THIS ONE'S FOR OXY BOB!!!

As the sun set behind Chapman's Lasinger Athletic Complex in Historic Olld Town Orange, the action started on and around Wilson Field with the start of another Panther football season against long time foe Menlo College "Oaks".

A typically beautiful Southern California evening brought temperatures in the mid to high 70's with a slight ocean breeze from the west to offer a refreshingly comfortable late summer night football environment.

Aided by the striking upbeat musical tunes provided by the enlarged Panther Pep Band, the crowd of around 2500, including nearly 500 Oaks supporters (many traveling from San Diego), the trumpets blasted away with a vast asortment of fight melodies supported by the ever consistant trombone section's tasteful emphasis in just the right places. And, as always, the percussionists
performed in top 10 form, keeping the beat of each musical selection "upbeat and moving forward". The rest of the group also performed well past expectations as well.

For the fourth year in a row, this pep band was led by the same conductor who was able to showcase the results of his planning, practice and other preparations, with an efficient execution.

The crowd continuously roared its approval after each hit was performed!

Depth, it was more than apparent Saturday night!

With a group of 22 Chapman yell leaders performiing impeccable routines throughout the evening down on the sidelines, the crowd had barely enough time to catch its breath. Excitement was present everywhere.

With several yell leaders having graduated last spring, there were questions as to how effective this team of co-eds could be in this rebuiding year.  But, as was evident throughout the evening, and especially with their professional looking scripted routines and unbelievable execution of the halftime performance, they left little doubt with those in attendance that there would be no stepping back this year. These youg ladies outdid themselves in all areas, continuously involving the partisan crowd in their cheers.

And, as if that was not enough, the school spirit was aided by another star performance by "Peter the Panther", who was active on the sidelines and in the stands, often leading the  spectators in cheers throughout the evening.

Oh yeah, about the contest on the playing fireld. Chapman won 21-7.

With a young Chapman defensive unit giving up a quick Oaks touchdown in the initial period, along
with 310 yards total offense on 75 plays, they bent, but did not break, by forcing 4 turn overs (2 which led to  eventual Panther TD's) and holding the Oaks 4 times inside the 20 yard line.

On offense, the Panthers were limited to 200 yards on 53 plays. But, as the game progressed, the young offensive line unit gained control. They will be a force to be reckoned with as they gain valuable playing experience the rest of the year.

Another highlight was the special team's 80 yard kick off return after the Oaks'  touchdown.

Chapman's yell leaders and pep band, along with "Peter the Panther", will be off until October. A bye week next week, followed by a team trip to Spokane (Whitworth) and then an away game at Pomona (maybe we can get the yell leaders to take a trip up the 57 Fwy).  They will return to home action on October 10, when  they host Whittier College.

But, you can rest well assured that they will continue practicing.

OXY BOB...make your reservations early for next year, you will not want to miss any of the on and off the field activities! Please come as my guest!

Nice job by the Poets a win is a win. Also a nice job by new Offensive coordinator and new Defensive coordinator. Long over due. Wish they had those guys around the last few years in those leadership roles. it seems some good adjustments were made during the game after a shakey start on Defense.

Whittier may have found themselves a good QB.
QuoteIt looks like Alesana Sausau, the transfer from San Joaquin Delta, will be the Poets' new starting QB
It appears that Sausau is not just Soso. :P

Nice win for the Poets last night. After reading last weeks, its sounds like the Purple People finally have two solid QB's ready to help out on offense.

Additionally, Good to hear that the hens walked away with a last minute/trick up their sleeves win.

Btw, who can forget about the Pup nation and the stags also starting off with a W as well. So hats off to them.

As for our other SCIAC schools, kingsmen, Leo's, et al., hope their loses only motivates them more to seek a rebounding W.

Anywho's, here's to a new week in SCIAC football and finally recognizing that the Giant elephant is in this cyber room: Oxy beating the Cats of Linfield  down in sunny So.Cal turf.
Hope to finally meet most of you Linfield posters at the Rock this upcoming saturday. Should be an awesome Saturday: My Dodgers beating the Giants at Home (for the a midday bashing) and rushing over to the Rock to see the Tigers beat the Cats.
