Is the Chapman QB over the line of scrimmage (the Pomona-Pitzer 49) when he releases the long pass?

Begins at about 0:32 secs.

(Did they "ice" the deep snapper?)

I paused it and looked for a long time. That is darn close.

Very close. :-\

Yes, Pomona called timeout to ice the kicker.

Was the QB past the line of scrimmage when he threw the ball? The ref did not call it, so I guess he wasn't. Maybe it was the camera angle? Or maybe I am a Chapman fan? Good eyes though Ralph and cawcdad! I paused it several times also and it was really close. I was at the game, but down near 20-30 yard line. I did remember thinking that the QB was out of the pocket and thought he was going to run for the sideline. It was an unbelievable catch by the receiver with defenders all over him.
I remember my heart dropping when the snap went astray, and then could not believe my eyes when he threw the TD. The receiver made a very good catch on that play as well.

The Pomona QB is one of the best I have seen in the SCIAC in my 18 years of following D3 football. He definitely played his heart out, as did the rest of the Pomona
team. My hats off to them and their coaching staff. Even when trailing, they kept pushing.

Ok, time for the big one.  Redlands leaves pet Jasper the bulldog behind to come to the big city and play Oxy at Patterson Field.

First off, I love this rivalry.  Forget about the Shoes, Drum, and Peace Pipe games, this has been THE game that matters in the SCIAC race, and the biggest rivalry of the past 10 years.  It's a shame it doesn't have its own trophy.  From 2000-2008 only 1/2 a SCIAC title has gone to any other team, and no one else has had a playoff berth.  This game is one of the reasons you play football at both schools.

Also adding to the rivalry is the fundamental difference in style of both teams.  Redlands is an 80's hair metal band, Oxy is Nirvana.  From the view of Oxy players, Redlands is unabashedly in love with itself.  Rolling huge speakers on the field and blasting Metallica at themselves instead of playing music over the loudspeakers. Putting big signs that say "Return to Dominance"  on the field we stretch on during what would eventually be a 4-5 season.  Putting little tombstones next to all the teams they beat on a sign last year on the same practice field.  Calling each other "bulldog brothers" constantly and unironically.  Helmet-slapping after plays like it's going out of style.  All of these things make Redlands the evil enemy in the eyes of an Oxy player.

I'm sure our style of psychological warfare pisses them off too.  I still chuckle when I think of going on the Redlands tailgater's facebook event group for last year's game, getting the whole Oxy team to RSVP and smack talking in the comments section.

Anyways, enough gushing over the rivalry, on to the actual game prediction:
I think this is going to be a very different game from last year, and will probably resemble 2007's game more in most aspects.  In that game Selway had a field day, throwing for 438yds.  The difference in the game was 111 (well deserved) penalty yards against Redlands, a late game INT returned to the Redlands 1 which allowed for the game winning Oxy score, and All-American Alex Groh's stellar punting.

Last year Oxy's defense dominated Redlands' o-line, with 7 sacks, 5 QB hurries, and 4 additional TFL.  Most of those stats came from D-linemen Fischer, Hildensperger, and Wertheimer, and OLB Beck.  All four return this year.  Oxy's offense seems to be hitting stride as well.

That being said, this game is always close, and this year will be no exception.  Whoever contains/pressures the QB, wins on special teams, and doesn't shoot themselves in the foot will win this game.  Historically that has been Oxy recently, but they play the game for a reason.  31-28 Oxy

Wow! been out of town for a while Whittier football a hot topic? My son played at Whittier and has made some quality life long friends. On the subject of class when you win you should win with class and when you lose you need to accept your faith and learn from your mistakes and work on getting better. My son chose to go to Whittier because Coach Carlson sold him a few years ago that they were rebuilding the program and he would have a great opportunity to play and get a great education he did both. Unfortunately for what ever reasons Coach left  and  Coach Hammer took over during a time when the current AD was not yet hired. It will all get worked out stay tuned. This guy wants to win and I hope to do things the right way. It is hard to sit in the stands and sometimes watch but you accept a rebuilding program for what it is an opportunity to play. I was disappointed to see that the sense of urgency to win now  by the current coaching staff take a back seat to bringing in quality character players and building a program such as Oxy ,Redlands Cal Lu etc. I see some of the other teams in the conference taking the high road to achieve this goal. I also feel on a squad of nearly 100 players that a few bad apples can mess things up. I can't mention the names of all of the good  quality guys but the last couple of years do you  think that  guys like QB Josh Scurlock  #11  Linebacker Jared Izodoro and  RB Anthony Pomponio #6 guys who lead the conference in their respected positions and current players  Linebacker Brandon Boehm # 44 and  O-lineman Alex Durazo would want their legacies associated with what is currently going on. Lets get it right Whittier we care!

You mention some fine players and they are good young men. Could anyone play harder and lead more than Scurlock, Pompanio or Jared?  No way. There have been many other quality young men and leaders that you did not mention.

The sad thing is...Hammer in a recent article said this year he finally has good senior leadership. What is  telling about Hammer is he has had plenty of quality seniors on his team over the years. In fact he currently has 5 former players on his coaching staff, 4 of them played as seniors and three were captains.

Apparently Hammer thinks highly enough to have these young men on his coaching staff, but they were not good senior leaders? LOL  Talk about throwing good people under the bus with BS excuses

Just shows his blame others, wait until next year, excuse after excuse mentality. Pathetic really.

BTW Coach Carlson was and is a class act. After his stint coaching with the LA Avengers, he is head coach at  a D3 university in Minnesota. Google, Youtube and twitter him to see what he is accomplishing.

I def. don't agree with the "well deserved" assessment. We can sit down and watch all those penalties and maybe ill give you that half called against UofR were legitimate! Btw the ref's called 17 penalties for 111 yards on Redlands compared to 3 penalties for 24 yards against Oxy in that 2007 game. I hope this game is called more evenly.

And just out of curiosity Nihon, were you guys aware that people "broke into" our locker area that year at OXY, and stole well over $10,000 in cash/wallets, textbooks, and electronics? I really hope that no OXY player took part or knew of anything about that and did not come forward. I promise you coach Maynard would have ran our asses to the ground if he even thought we were apart of something like that during a game in Redlands...

As for the rest of the teams, honestly, I just hope for no injuries and that both sides play their hearts out....
It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up.

Nihon Tiger

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree about the penalties.  It's almost like we were on two different teams at the time!  ;D

As for the wallets, yes I heard about it and that was really unfortunate.  Of course all of the players were on the field at the time, and I've forgotten my wallet on campus and come back hours later to find it sitting in plain sight, untouched, so I doubt it was some type of student conspiracy to eff over Redlands.  Anyways if it were I'm sure I would've heard about it since Oxy's a small place.  Oxy is however located next to an extremely low income area in Highland Park, and we've had thieves from outside come to campus and steal a lot of valuable stuff from students over my 4 years there.  Couple that with the atrociously bad security at Patterson Field (anyone under 30 is basically allowed in the field/locker room area, no questions asked).  Let's hope they've bumped up game day security at least, after that incident.

In other news, here is some more Oxy v. Redlands stuff, which will probably make bulldog52 hate me forever  :(

Here are some Oxy highlights from last year's game.  Highlights at 0:37-1:00, 1:43-1:56  (Apologies for J.D. Ciasulli's terrible 300 quote in advance)

Tough game between Oxy and the Dogs Saturday night in Eagle Rock.  It's going to be a close game until the 4th quarter.  The dogs will then run away with it.

Nice cheap shot there, Bulldog.

Riverside Press-Enterprise, October 8, 2007:

QuoteThieves hit Redlands team

The University of Redlands lost more than a football game when it traveled to Occidental College on Saturday night.

Thieves ransacked the Redlands locker room during the first half, rummaging through players' bags and lockers and stealing cell phones, wallets and iPods. A spokesman for Occidental said the school will try to reimburse the players once Redlands compiles a full list of stolen items.

"It's a downside of the business, but a locker room is a place where someone can go through lockers and gain some stuff," Redlands athletic director Jeff Martinez said. "It wasn't directed at us as a school or at any one individual. We just happened to be in town."

Wasn't meant to be a cheap shot, but like I said, I was "curious" to know since I really haven't thought about that incident since it happened.

No, you only speculated that Oxy players had something to do with the theft, when you well know they didn't, and in fact Oxy made restitution for everything that was stolen, right? But it wasn't a cheap shot.

I don't have anything approaching the backbiting, criticism of coaches, calling out players by name, and charges of veiled racism that the Whittier fans seem to enjoy, so instead here's one of those items that Stop_Its_Hammer_Time hates:

From the San Diego area North County Times:

QuoteOhnesorge looks to punt his way back to the NFL

There was a time in Cory Ohnesorge's football career when he lined up in his position 15 yards behind the long snapper and flashed his hands, he knew 70,000-plus fans' eyes were on him as he prepared to punt.

He's a long way from the Meadowlands.
...

As the punter for the North County Cobras, a semipro football team that plays its home games at Rancho Buena Vista High, Ohnesorge is trying to earn another NFL chance after a short-lived stint with the New York Giants.
...

He went to Occidental College, where he was a two-time Division III All-American. Ohnesorge graduated in 2006, spent a year coaching at Occidental, and arranged a tryout with the Giants in the spring of 2007. He stuck through minicamps, training camp and all four exhibition games, averaging 43.4 yards on his 17 punts with a long of 56.

That wasn't enough to convince the Giants to keep him over veteran Jeff Feagles. After receiving no offers, he returned to Oceanside.
...

"I have no idea why the Giants let him go, with his capabilities and attitude," Cobras coach Tony Vinson said. "I don't know how long we'll be able to keep him, because our ultimate goal is to get these guys back into the league."

The Cobras, of course, wouldn't stand in Ohnesorge's way if an NFL opening presented itself. For that to happen, he'll need to remain diligent in his efforts to get game film in NFL talent evaluators' hands, continue to punt well and hope a position or two opens due to poor performance or injury.
...

I merely asked if Nihon was aware that it happened, and if he knew of any players involved, if there were any at all. For a man of your age and experience Mr. Bob, respectfully, I don't think its mature to try and insinuate I was trying to verbally "cheap shot" a former rival.

If it sounded like a cheap shot well then I'll gladly apologize.

snoop dawg

How could Oxy's football players have possibly been involved?  They were on the field when the items were stolen during the game.  The incident should not reflect on Oxy in any way.

It could of happened anywhere, even Redlands.

Just a question, don't they keep the locker rooms locked during the games opening them up at half and after the game?  Or you would think that there would be security there to insure things like this don't happen.

Should be a good game tomorrow.
