Why does Occidental play home games at 7pm ?
All conference night games start at 7pm.

When I lived in Thousand Oaks, I could drive back from games at Redlands and be home by midnight.

Understood but Occidental plays all home at 7 pm and rest of SCIAC mostly at 1 pm...just wondering why Occidental likes the 7 pm slot. After checking Schedule looks like Redlands has switched this year to night conference games also.

I think you'll find that the teams that have fields with lights play in the evening.  Oxy plays all home games in the evening except homecoming.  Always a safer bet with CA weather.

Note, I realize that some will dispute the assertion that Oxy has lights.

Good point.  And why us northern teams rarely play night games after September even if we have lights! :D

I think Claremont, Pomona Pitzer,Redlands, and Whittier all have lights but play  conference games at 1 pm slot. Non conference more night due to early season and less heat.  Occidental must see some advantage to schedule all confernce at 7 pm at Patterson....maybe the "assertion" factor is a psych advantage ?

LaVerne does not, Cal Lu does not, and if Pomona has added lights, it's w/i the last 30 years . . . can't remember Claremont . . . Redlands has lights and plays at night . . . I don't remember Whittier . . . .

D O.C.

Sure, I saw LINFIELD play at Whittier at night, the night Carl Haberberger went out for the season and that shootout with OXY a couple years ago was at night.

Oxy game @ Claremont was at night last year too.  Seem to vaguely remember Pomona having lights but both games I played there were during the day.

Do you think Oxy's games at night might have something to do with UCLA playing at the Rose Bowl?  Just asking?

I doubt it since the Oxy-Linfield game was almost the exact same start time as the UCLA-Kansas game and traffic was a little heavy getting to Oxy that day as a result....

No, they played those long before UCLA played regular season games in the Rose Bowl.

Sabertooth:
Pomona does have lights and had them prior to when they remodeled. Our High School (Claremont) used it as home field on Friday nights when I went there.  The Chapman game last week was a 7pm

I did hear Rose Bowl officals were somewhat concerned about their fans being able to get in and out when they found out they were going against the Linfield Oxy game ;D

Oxy played a lot of day football games until 1982. At that time the Oakland Raiders moved to LA and were set to play in the Coliseum. UCLA decided they didn't want to share the Coliseum with the Raiders and USC, so the Bruins moved to the Rose Bowl. UCLA was concerned that the huge throngs of fans who regularly attend Oxy football games would jam the freeways and surface streets leading to the Rose Bowl, preventing UCLA fans from getting to games, so even though Oxy is 5 miles from the Rose Bowl and in a completely different city, UCLA nonetheless asked Oxy if they'd play their games at night. The rest is history.

Hey, who says that D-III football doesn't get any coverage? In the Los Angeles Times sports section under "Saturday's TV highlights" right alongside Florida at LSU,  Michigan at Iowa, and Georgia Tech at Florida State, is Redlands at Occidental on KCCA 1050 AM, not to mention that tigersports will be on the air on OxyBroadcast.com and KadyTV.com.
