Oh callow youth.  TigerHeart . . . whatever happened to grace in victory?   Smack talk ahead, grace after, not vice versa.

And I think that all west coast DIII fans would prefer to see MORE SCIAC and NWC presence in the playoffs, not less . . . and so outside of our head to head contests, like to see our competition do well and gain recognition on a national scale . . .

Yikes.  I'm leaving that one alone.

Anyways, congrats to the Tigers on their win, but I doubt they're pleased with their performance.  By my count, the Tigers were 4yds and an untimely fumble away from scoring 11 extra points in the first 20 minutes of that game alone.  Flushing away two prime red zone chances and the opportunity to put away a weaker team early is unacceptable for any team that wishes to call itself elite.  I'm also confused as to why Oxy completely abandoned its run game after a 90+ yd. first half by Haller.  They'll need that run game against Cal Lu; we certainly did last year.

There were a few bright spots in the game: Jordan Washington had a hell of a game and has turned into the Tigers' x factor and most exciting player with the ball in his hands, he shook about 4 defenders on that TD catch/run.  Groh had an awesome game as he usually does with a 43.3 average even with 4 inside the 20 pooch punts.  Haller did a great job minus the fumble, running hard for extra yardage and blocking his butt off on pass plays (which saved the Tigers against Redlands which I forgot to mention last week).  Jordan Inabnit was solid as always too, with one of his longer receptions since the Collins era.

Here's hoping the Tigers learn to put away bad teams early this week against La Verne for Homecoming.

Yeah, Jordan Haller and Jordan Lehman told me I had Inabnit's name wrong.

Let me summarize the banality and astounding meaninglessness for you, as stated in the article by Redlands head coach Mike Maynard:

The only way a loss stays a loss is if you don't correct your mistakes, and every mistake interconnects Redlands as a team, which bonds them. Redlands can really use the loss to Oxy to rally around, and hard work always overcomes the disappointment of losing a game. Redlands needs some help, but you never know what's going to happen. Redlands feels like there's still the opportunity to have a winning season, win the SCIAC, and make the playoffs, but their backs are against the wall.

I believe there was a post oa while back about Caron padding his sons stats at Pomona.  I hope he is happy for the last touchdown tonight.  Use your head coach!  There is no reason to throw the ball up 17 points with 1:19 to play.  Pathetic.

http://www.pe.pomona.edu/sports/men/fball/2009-10/ulv-pp.htm

I was the one who made the comment about Caron trying to score a lot of garbage time points.  However, I looked at the play-by-play you posted, and P-P ran 10 straight running plays before that throw.  The throw was after a 15 yd. penalty gave Pomona a 3rd and G from the 20 yd. line.  I would hardly call that pathetic or running up the score.  Both Carons are OK in my book on that specific sequence (which I'm sure is very important to both of them).

Owing to the complaints of Redlands fans, pregame activities were awesome. Security took down the barriers in the lower parking lot, and Oxy and Chapman partied in a festival-like atmosphere. It was a veritable UN as Panther and Tiger fans sang each others' fight songs and gave everyone hearty pats on the back. As usual, I showed up and ate everyone's food. Just call me SpongeBob.

SpongeBob and other moochers (must have at least a passing interest in Oxy Football) are always welcome.

Eyewitness report from Eagle Rock:

Oxy 20, Chapman 14

Beautiful, clear, warm night at Oxy. The Tigers did just enough to beat the Panthers.

Yesterday I mentioned:

Quote from: OxyBob on October 17, 2009, 01:30:23 AM
Memo to Oxy: Try covering #82 Dan Delahoussaye this time. He only had 6 catches for 190 yards and 3 TDs last year.

Oxy got a break right off. On the first play of the game, Eric Willcockson went long to Delahoussaye for a TD but the play was called back for illegal procedure. Oxy scored first on a 22-yard FG by Neil Martin. Chapman came back on a 28-yard pass from Willcockson to Delahoussaye. Jim Hildensperger blocked the extra point try, and Nick Saraceni picked up and ran it back for 2 points and it was 6-5. Scott Saunders hit Jordan Washington on a 42-yard TD pass play featuring some nifty-shifty moves by Washington, and the quarter ended with Oxy up 12-6.

In the second quarter, Oxy had a chance to extend the lead, but Jason Haller fumbled going in and Chapman recovered. Oxy led 12-6 at the half.  No scoring in the third quarter. The Tigers finally broke through with about 6:30 to go on a short run by Haller, got 2 on a pass from Saunders to Washington, and it was 20-6. But the lead didn't last long because Kevin Krail ran the kickoff back 91 yards and CU converted a 2-point PAT and it was 20-14. That's how it ended.

Both teams operated most of the night in fits and starts. The Panthers have two excellent receivers in Delahoussaye (9 catches for 91 yards) and Chris Langstaff (7 catches for 101 yards), but Chapman just wasn't able to sustain its attack. For Oxy, Saunders threw for 310 yards, Jason Jordan Inabnit had 7 catches for 141 yards including a 71-yarder, Chris Washington had 168 all-purpose yards, and Haller rushed for 113 net yards on 24 carries. If you like punting, this game was for you. Chapman punted 8 times and Oxy 7 times. Oxy's Alex Groh, the Pablo Picasso of Punting, showed his artistry by killing 4 punts inside the 20, and booming three others.

Oxy is now 4-1 and faces La Verne next week. Chapman is 2-3 and hosts Cal Lutheran next Saturday.

I'm going to add my color commentary to OB's play-by-play.

This was my first SCIAC game since watching Redlands lose at Trinity 35-10 in 2006.  I mostly get to see Austin College and Mary Hardin Baylor in Texas.

I wasn't able to make kickoff and had to arrive just after the called back Chapman TD.

I bought my ticket and noticed the "Adults and Alums" are charged $8.  Is there some kind of of message there? :o

I looked for Oxy Bob but couldn't find him.  But as luck would have it I sat next to a knowledgeable coed from Georgia/Las Vegas.  She was visiting Daniel Rucker and follows Oxy football on the internet games etc. in Georgia.  Much better than sitting next to OB.

The extra point return by Saraceni was very exciting.  After getting the ball, he stumbled for two or three steps and than ran for his life with a Chapman guy right on his tail.  It looked like something out of one of those Halloween movies that are out now.

The 42 yard pass play by Jordan Washington was something.  He usually runs around guys, but in this case finished it off by plowing through guys at the goal line.  He is an impressive player, and is likely to be a SCIAC MVP before his career is over.

Jordan W. and others make Oxy one of the fastest teams I have seen for the various positions.  Chapman was no slouch either.  Maybe it's just the "lights" at Oxy.  There aren't many to start with, and some of those are  out.  It would be nice to see them fixed by the CLU game, but maybe that would take a tuition increase.  8)

Chapman is an underrated team.  The recent loss to Whittier probably was due to looking past them to Oxy as well as a fired up bunch of Poets who were pissed off at negative comments made on this board by their "fans".  The Chapman QB did a very good job.

The fumble by Haller was really compounded by the fifty yard return with it.  That is something you see too often.  It looked like it would go all the way.

The two point Oxy PAT was a very pretty play.  The two point PAT on the Chapman fake kicking PAT completely fooled everyone.  It was very well thought out and executed by the players and coaches.

All the Oxy plays in the second half seemed to be near the Oxy bench.  Is there some kind of strategy here?  The coaches can get more involved while the visitors coaches are squinting through the night darkness from the far side.

Exactly what I was going to say.  When I mentioned it out loud during the game one of the parents started to say something and then thought better of it, so I thought there must be something I don't know.  They also ran the shotgun almost all the time.

On the Chapman punts, Jake Meyer, #40, looked like he could have blocked any of them.  He was in every time.  It looked like he chose not to risk a penalty.

Chapman has several players from Orange Lutheran, one of the better teams in the area.  They will continue to be a tough opponent.

I'm sorry I missed the tailgate.  I enjoyed crashing the school wide picnic both times I attended games at Trinity.  But I didn't let them know I wasn't a financial supporter. :-X

Do not be surprised when they start direct snapping to Haller against California Lutheran University.

Michelle Gardner is a sportswriter whose articles and columns appear in several local papers including the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, San Bernardino Sun, Whittier Daily News, Redlands Daily Facts, and some others. She has a blog called College Sports With Michelle Gardner. Ever the unbiased reporter, the blog is filled with classic Redlands whining. Some examples:

From October 10:

QuoteNow that the Los Angeles Angels are about to rid themselves of the demon that is the Boston Red Sox, let's hope the University of Redlands can do the same with what has been its kryptonite - the Occidental Tigers.
...

Redlands has lost five straight games to the Tigers. Last year plain old bad luck made a difference as quarterback Dan Selway was out with a broken foot. He threw for more than 400 yards against the Tigers the previous year so his loss was huge.

The Bulldogs will have to play a near perfect game. Not only is Oxy good, it is playing at home and strange things seem to happen there. Two years ago the Bulldogs had 17 penalties for 111 yards while the Tigers were called for just three for 24 yards. One team might traditionally draw more penalties but there should NEVER be that much of a discrepancy in that category.

The Occidental stadium is a disaster too. It's a nice facility, but there is seating on just one side. So yes you have fans from the two teams way too close to each other. There were several near fights the last time the teams played there. It is such a competitive game and there is so much on the line, tempers are going to flare.

Redlands should also bring its own security guard to watch its lockerroom. Two years ago the Bulldog players lost as much as $10,000 in personnel belongings to a thief - latops, cell phones, iPods. [sic]

The Bulldogs appear to have the edge in most statistical categories. But sometimes you can want something too bad. If they relax, focus and play their own game and don't get caught up in all the hoopla, they can come away victorious.

First, to be affected by kryptonite, don't you have to be Superman?

Let's count the number of excuses, explanations and justifications for Redlands losing: We have bad luck, we have penalties (aka referees), we have Patterson Field itself, we have security, we have nervousness and lack of focus, and we have hoopla.

I guess personnel belongings can also be personal belongings.

From October 11:

QuoteIt was the same old song dance.

Again the University of Redlands fell to Occidental, this time 27-24 in overtime. This loss was worse than any of the previous five. This Oxy team is clearly not as talented as most of the past and the Bulldogs still couldn't defeat it.
...

Redlands dominated for three quarters. Then it got too conservative on offense and Occidental started making plays. Redlands was up 24-10, then missed two scoring chances that probably would have put the Tigers away.

A Dan Selway fumble in the Oxy end squelched a threat that could have made it 31-10. But the Bulldogs defense held.

The offense drove again only to miss a 19-yarder that would have made it 27-10. You can't leave a good team in the game.

When Oxy scored to make it 24-17 you could see the Bulldogs start to tighten up. They had three personel fouls on that drive alone that amounted to 40 yards in penalties.

Occidental was more poised when it mattered. Now the Bulldogs are left to try and make something out of the season.
...

You hear that, Oxy? You're not talented and Superman still couldn't defeat you. I think that means that the Tigers are Lex Luthor.

QuoteKAREN: "Kramer, are these questions really that important?"

KRAMER: "Yes, they're important! If you stumble, if you hesitate, you can kiss the crown goodbye. Now if I've told you once, I've told you a thousand times - poise counts! It's just as important as the others. Swimsuit! Evening wear! Talent! POISE!"

From October 16:

QuoteMaynard says his team still has a shot of getting in the playoffs, even if it finishes second. That wouldn't seem like a strong possibility since the SCAIC hasn't had a second team make the playoffs in his two decade tenure. But with the current economic climate, the NCAA could take a second team, possibly Redlands, and send it to Oxy for a first round playoff game because the cost would be next to nothing.

Of course the Bulldogs have to run the table to think about that playing out and that would mean beating a Cal Lutheran team, that from what other coaches tell me, is probably better than Occidental.

Stay poised, Bulldogs.

Lol. Miss Gardner. I think you just pissed off a team who will quietly find ways to win all of their next coming games and stay classy in the process. Here's to Oxy sending you crow for your offseason writing.

From the "It Runs In The Family" Department, courtesy of Michelle Gardner in the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin:

QuoteFootball takes up much of Claremont-Mudd-Scripp coach Rick Candaele's week. It's supposed to; that's his job. But he gets even more of a football fix than his colleagues.

When he isn't prepping the Stags for their next game, he is cheering on son Coley, who heads the football program at Vista Murrieta High School.

Candaele has made it to every one of the Broncos' games this season. His players don't have classes on Friday, which allows him to hold practice early enough he can make it to prep games. He even made the trek to Palos Verdes for a game earlier this month.
...

The younger Candaele's Broncos are off to an impressive 6-0 start and is ranked third in the CIF-Southern Section Inland Division.

Took a look at her website, and Michelle Gardner sucks.  Learn how to spell and write sentences that aren't painfully awkward or get a new job.

Where are the La Verne posters?  I know there have been some around in the past, did they give up after last season?  Don't quit on your team/school, post patterns needs you!

This Saturday's schedule:

Redlands (4-1) @ Claremont (3-2) 1:00 p.m.
Pomona (3-2) @ Whittier (2-3) 3:00 p.m.
La Verne (0-5) @ Oxy (4-1) 3:00 p.m.
Cal Lutheran (4-1) @ Chapman (2-3) 7:00 p.m.

Oxy will roll over La Verne.

Chapman will struggle to score against CLU. Kingsmen will win.

Pomona-Whittier is a toss-up. The teams are evenly matched. I don't think the Poets can stop Jake Caron, so I'll give the edge to the Sagehens.

Claremont has the best rushing offense in the conference (219 yds. per game), but Redlands has the best rushing defense in all of D-III (34 yds. per game). Claremont hung in there against both Oxy and Cal Lutheran, but the Stags' big problem is that they don't score much (17.6 points per game). Redlands, on the other hand, scores a lot (36.8 points per game). Pick: Redlands.

Far be it from me to challenge you on anything researchable but there was discussion pages ago about Occidental Presidential Breeding Ground College playing home night games.
This is correct?

BTW, just when DO we set the clocks back?
