Actually Oxy won their first two playoff games in 2004. It's nice being rewarded with a home game once in a blue moon and makes quite a difference in chances of converting a win. Why do you think we bitch about getting the shaft when the 2005 Oxy team who was 9-0 and a top ten ranked team had to go to 9-0 and play top ranked Linfield* in the first round. It is a joke and half the tourney is seeded and the other is not.

*Fixed and that was a joke.

Add my vote to the "NWC and SCIAC get screwed" count.

Count me in.  I live in Texas and I see this happen to them all the time.  It does give me a chance to see a first round game though.

I think these comments are spot on . . . especially when the SCIAC gets no respect based on a reputation as normally not getting out of the first round . . . when the pairings are constantly based on economic factors and top seeds face each other at the outset (don't think it's gonna be an issue this year) . . . just saying . . .

but economic realities rule, ****e happens, nothing to get worked up about.

EDIT:  [So if I spell "****" as "****e" it doesn't help?]

I've said many times before that we should be happy that the NCAA springs for the playoffs.

NWC and SCIAC playoff teams getting screwed over in November is something you can set your watch by.  I understand why they do it, but obviously it isn't fair.  I wouldn't go all OxyBob say it makes the entire playoff system a sham however, since D3 football isn't exactly known for parity.  I mean you could line Mount Union up against the #2, 3, 4, 5, 6 teams in the country every year and they would still probably win 70% of the championships.

As a player, even if you don't have realistic national championship aspirations, it sucks to know that if you go 9-0 and win each game by 40pts you'll still be on the road in the first round, same as if you go 5-4 and squeak in with the AQ.  It also sucks to be 9-0 and #13 ranked nationally, then go play one of two higher ranked teams in your region, while relatively crappy teams like then #22 Monmouth get to host even crappier teams like unranked Aurora for meaningless first round wins, which is what happened last year.

Will some NWC or SCIAC booster just get rich and donate a stipend for equality in the West Region playoffs?  I'm lookin' at you, RFB, since you said you're hiring us lowly Oxy grads in your mailroom or whatever!

Sabretooth Tiger

Nihon,

RFB promised loading dock over mailroom.

And I'm pretty sure when you strike it rich, you'd rather endow the "Dale Widolff Chair for Football Studies" than a travel stipend for the SCIAC and NWC . . . so let me know when you're ready and I'll put you in touch with the right people!

Why do things go up and not down? Didn't see every team flying all over the country when Google raked it in and I could get two ply toilet paper in California State Park rest rooms.

I am in the back row in the SCIAC choir. They do their best and have had to play a NWC whose champs have been 82-8 since 2001, And that's not even considering 1999 National Champion Pacific Lutheran (who only beat Cal Lu by 2 the first game of the year).

Have to agree...you guys do get screwed over by geography, but thus is the system we are given.

Although you should have to play in some real weather ;)

You mean back in the day when the California State Parks were actually open for use?

You have something against the Fargo Dome?

Oxy Bob is still thawing out from his trip to Central.  His fingers are finally warm.

Adam Samrov  Around the East

In the ATN Podcast, Pat and Keith talk about how Mount Union could still be imported to the East even if Alfred AND Albright finish undefeated. I know that the scheduling committee picks the top four teams, regardless of region, but if two actual East Region teams finish unbeaten and Mount Union still gets imported in, the whole Division III playoff setup is a farce. A complete farce. What do you think? Do you believe the setup is unfair? E-mail me at adam.samrov@d3football.com and put ATR as the subject line.

How could he with all the perfect weather in Southern California. ;)

BTW, teams traveling west can get distracted by the sunshine and warmth, not to mention all the movie star sightings.  SCIAC teams should be allowed to take advantage of that in the playoffs.
