SCIAC recruiting news from the San Luis Obispo Tribune:

QuoteCOLLEGE COMMITMENTS Three Atascadero athletes have committed to four-year universities, the school announced. Two Greyhounds will play Division III football, as offensive lineman Dalton Spinas chose Occidental, while linebacker Steven Keezer opted for Cal Lutheran.

As a senior, Spinas earned PAC 7 Offensive Lineman of the Year, all-CIF Southern Section Northern Division and all-San Luis Obispo County first-team distinction. He helped pave the way for a rushing attack that produced 263.9 yards per game and 36 touchdowns. Keezer, an all-league and all-county second-team honoree, had 75 tackles and an interception this past season.

One of my baseball players at Gig Harbor was also our QB this last season.  On one of our recent bus trips he told me that he is planning to attend Redlands.  I told him that Selway has at least another 3 years and that he needs to pull his paperwork back and send it in to Linfield.

This isn't the first time Redlands has hinted that a player can play both baseball and quarterback.  Be patient.  He may end up at Linfield in four or five years.

Whoa, Whoa, Whoa!  GHC, you have to get this kid on the right path here....Redlands?  Really?  [low blow] Isn't that place going to be broke in about 2 years? [/low blow]

D O.C.

(lower) No, I believe the Soboba Gaming Circle and the San Manuel Band of Mission Gamers has offered to bail them out in return for a ten year home and home series with Haskell University and parking space during future Inland Empire Pow-Wows. (lower)

If Redlands is in financial trouble, I wonder where they are getting the dollars for their recent large multi format advertising campaign. Unless that was a last ditch effort to bring in funds this year, they have some doe lying around.

They have a $13M shortfall in their budget this year but I'm sure that in time UofR will bounce back.

QuoteLast year, there was a 22-percent decline in the principle value of the endowment attributed to the recession.

It's principal, you sharp-eyed editors at the RDF.

Silver lining: The 22% decline in the principal value of the UR endowment is still not as bad as the 100% decline in wins over Oxy since 2003.

SCIAC recruiting news from the Watsonville Register-Pajaronian:

QuoteSaturday's roundup: St. Francis' Lucas, Miller pick colleges

St. Francis Central Coast Catholic's Chad Lucas and Jacob Miller are going from high school teammates to college rivals.

Lucas has committed to play football and baseball at the University of La Verne, while Miller has committed to play football at the University of Redlands. The schools are about 30 miles from each other in Southern California.
...

Lucas said that La Verne had a sense of community like St. Francis. He said former St. Francis player Willie Griffin, a freshman defensive back at La Verne last year, loved it there.

"I really liked the whole atmosphere," Lucas said. "I really liked the town. I feel like I fit in there."

Miller said he liked Redlands' location, liked how the players he met were "open and honest" and that the school can accommodate his study interests in business and music.

Miller said he will likely play running back, as Redlands' head coach told him he would likely be higher on the depth chart on offense. Lucas, a quick running back and defensive back, said it was still undecided if he would play defense or offense. La Verne could have a sizable local contingent next season, as a few other local players are also expected to play football there next season.

So according to Redlands -ease that must mean he will be on defense.
