NB's Rychel, Stevens make college choices

New Braunfels added another pair of student-athletes who are taking their games to the next level.

Brett Rychel, a safety for the 5A state semifinalist Unicorns, signed on Friday to play for University of Redlands in Redlands, Calif. ...

Rychel, a defensive stalwart on New Braunfels' run to the Class 5A state semifinals last season, is headed west to California, but his memory of his final Unicorn football season will always be with him.

"I'm going to remember (the Unicorns playoff run) forever," Rychel said. "I'm going to try and improve on all the hard work I've put in this year and hope to build off of that."

The Unicorn safety had 58 tackles and led the team with five interceptions for 149 yards during the regular season.

The guy played for a team called the Unicorns. Well, he'll feel right at home in Redlands. A unicorn, like UR beating Oxy, is just another flight of fancy.

College football grows, but not so much out West

Ever since the mid-1980s, college football programs have been disappearing particularly in California. Whether it is Long Beach State, UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Fullerton, Pacific or St. Mary's College, there are fewer four-year options in the state and west of the Rockies. At the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), there are the Pac-10 programs as well as the Mountain West (MWC) and the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), though Louisiana Tech geographically shouldn't be considered west.

Of the 125 programs at the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), you have the Big Sky and the five-team Great West and....that's it. California, the most populated state in the United States, has all of four FCS programs (UC Davis, Sacramento State, Cal Poly SLO, Univ. of San Diego).

Actually, us Bronco football players got screwed a long time ago when our no-balls AD allowed let Roman Gabriel twist in the wind on the fate of the program and he took the USFL job in Portland.

...and its a fact that our AD had no balls.  She hated the football program from day 1.

But I'm over it.
