Keith Jackson to receive honorary degree from Whittier College

Retired sportscaster Keith Jackson will receive an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Whittier College Friday at its 107th commencement ceremony.

Jackson's tie to the college is that his daughter Melanie is its artist- in-residence and faculty member in voice.

In Jackson's case I'd have thought that his daughter's name would be Nellie.

Nice choice at QB...I guess DJ gets disqualified for where he spent his final season in the NCAA.

Surely that didn't help...but Czernek actually had better three year numbers than DJ.

What I remember about Czernek is that he threw the ball a zillion times a game.

The United Football League 2010 Player Draft brought 12 new players to the roster of each of the league's five teams.

With the third selection of the 2010 UFL Draft, Sacramento Mountain Lions Head Coach Dennis Green selected Justin Goltz, quarterback from Occidental College. In the second round, Green added Tavita Thompson, offensive tackle from Oregon State University. In the third round, Green added Tim Clark, defensive back from Oregon State University.

Justin Goltz came out of Occidental college in 2009. He was an undrafted NFL rookie free agent quarterback. A training camp contributor with the Detroit Lions, he received good reviews despite his lack of big university playing experience. Those good reviews were heard all the way in San Francisco, where it was reported that Goltz was offered a spot on the UFL's California Redwoods – now known as the Sacramento Mountain Lions.

Congrats to Goltz, he was a gamer for sure. Him and Collins had that same poise and nack for making plays when it counted (forth and ten scramble to set up a win)... I think the qb from Linfield is very similar to Goltz, maybe a little stronger of an arm but same athleticism for tall guys.

Seven Palo Alto seniors can claim to have been on the Vikings team that achieved a school-record 29 victories. Playing their final prep game in the Central Coast Section Div. II baseball championship game at San Jose Municipal Stadium on Saturday were Scott Witte, Joc Pederson, Wade Hauser, Jared Beeson, Conor Raftery, Geoff Dodson and Wyatt Shaw.

Philip Albornoz and Steven Locke will see each other in a new light next football season.

Albornoz and Locke were teammates on the Barstow High School football team for the last four years, and have played on the same Barstow Youth Football team since they were in fourth grade. However, the pair of seniors will be attending and playing for rival schools next season. Albornoz will be attending California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, and Locke will go to the University of Redlands. Redlands and California Lutheran are both members of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

I know this might get some biased answers but I am going to be in Pasadena for three days and know I'll be pretty close to most of the SCIAC schools.  I'd like to hit a campus or two if I have some spare time.  Anyone have any recommendations for campus visits?  It might be nice to actually visit the campus for one of the schools I have written the Kickoff Previews for...who knows, I might even meet face to face with one of those HC's I've worked with in writing the capsules.

Does anyone know if the Rose Bowl is open for tours during the off-peak season?  I'm looking to make the most of my wife's business trip to southern California.

Cal Tech is right in the heart of Pasadena.  They may not be in your Kickoff, but they are worth the visit.  Occidental is less than five miles from the Rose Bowl in the Eagle Rock area of Los Angeles.

Oxy is minutes from Pasadena . . . Caltech is in Pasadena but since you're posting your inquiry in the football board, I'm guessing that's not relevant?

The Claremont Colleges (Claremont and Pomona), LaVerne and Whittier are all about 30 minutes away (with good traffic) . . . Cal Lu a little under an hour, Redlands about an hour (all assuming good traffic, which is never a good assumption).

Oxy is by far the most obvious choice and easiest access from Pasadena.  Depending on when you are visiting, it might be easy to arrange a quick tour from staff.

No need to visit anywhere else. Just Head north east to the lu. I bet security could provide a private tour on their new uber-expensive and extremely unnecessary segways that they roam the streets on, intimidating all criminals in sight.

Take OB's advice and hit up the old folks home located on the North end of campus. I think he plays bridge there on Sundays.

Also check out the new multi million dollar art gallery located in the clock tower that looms over a fresh new football stadium... Wait nevermind that won't be ready until next year...
