Bulldog defense to rely on secondary

Teams looking to pass on the University of Redlands football team might want to think twice.

Coming off a 2009 campaign in which they allowed just a paltry 54.4 rushing yards per game, the Bulldog defense might be best known for the small amount of passing yards they give up in 2010.

With the return of starting safeties Mike Nicolini and Josh Herrera, who led the team with five interceptions last year, new Defensive Coordinator Joey Mariani knows that his group's biggest strength may lie in the secondary.

Joining Nicolini and Herrera in the defensive backfield will be cornerbacks Richard Dye II and Vince Aiello who will look to improve on last year's defense which allowed 244.6 passing yards per game.

A strong start from that secondary could be key for a Bulldog defensive unit that is having to replace all three starting linebackers from a year earlier.

With the graduation of Josh Cunningham and Scott Garner, and the fact that sophomore standout Ian Sluss had to leave the team for personal reasons, Mariani will have to break in three new starters.

I have a question for Cal Lutheran fans about the streaming of the Linfield football game this Saturday. Does anyone know if the Cal Lu website archives the game afterward? I will be out of town during the game, but would be interested in viewing it later. Thanks.

  I think I have a perfect weekend in the works.  Pick up Wildcat 11.  Fly to LA-- hook up with my other son, up from San Diego.  Next up I am sure is red meat and beer somewhere near where we are staying.  Saturday it is Catdome South time. PM  Fly home -- Break out my Joe Montana #16 Jersey for the 49er-Seahawk game on Sunday--
