CLU vs. Whittier Highlights:

Look for Barta to have another huge game today and become the nation's sole leader in sacks per game.

Another good matchup to fine tune the passing game.

Good luck in the Purple Pit Leo's ... wish I could see Cedric Ho take another beating this year, then read hilarious tweets about it afterward.

The Tigers will devour the Sagehens in this classic matchup and return of DW to the field.

Moments of brilliance, not a "well oiled machine" at the moment. Gonna have to have a great week and step it up a notch for the appearance at Runner next Saturday afternoon.

QuoteProulx on the Prowl as Tigers take home Drum

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 16, 2010) – In the last 20 plus years no Occidental College football player had recorded more than 20 tackles in a game, but tonight Nate Proulx tallied 22 to lead the Tigers to a 39-26 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory in the 112th meeting with Pomona-Pitzer. Occidental retained possession of The Drum for the seventh consecutive year in the longest running rivalry in Southern California.

Tonight the Black and Orange scored via two passing touchdowns, a rushing touchdown, a fumble recovery, an interception, two safeties and five PATs by Joshua Mun.

In a game that saw a little bit of everything, Proulx shined. He recorded nine solo stops with 12 assists and broke up a play as well. Another defensive standout tonight was  Dillon Tucker who got the only interception of the evening, in the fourth quarter, and ran the pick back 60 yards for a touchdown. That, however, was not the only scoring opportunity for the defensive back. Towards the end of the third quarter Greg Fryan blocked a PAT attempt by Alex Lammers and Tucker recovered the ball and ran it back 90 yards for a safety.

As rare as a safety is, the Tigers got two tonight. The first came at the beginning of the third quarter when freshman Jordan Lance blocked a Lammers punt attempt.

The crazy plays did not end there. After Lance's blocked punt the Tigers drive began at the PP 49 yard line. It ended with a 21 yard rush by Wes McDaniel who fumbled at the goal line but the ball was recovered by Nate Sullivan in the end zone for a touchdown.

McDaniel did land in the end zone tonight, thought, on the first drive of the game when he rushed one yard for a TD just two and a half minutes into the game.

Pomona-Pitzer tied things up with 31 seconds to go in the first quarter and took a 14-7 lead early in the second stanza on two rushes.

The Tigers responded with a pair of Luke Collis to Matthew Tuckness touchdown passes for six and 42 yards, respectively, at the 5:03 and 1:39 marks to tie and take the lead.

Overall Collis was 11-for-15 for 178 yards and two TDs. His longest completion of the night was the 42 yard pass to Tuckness. He was responsible for another 40-yard pass to senior Nick Saraceni in the first quarter. At halftime Collis was 8-for-11 passing. Tuckness and McDaniel each nabbed three passes while Sullivan caught two.

On the ground McDaniel racked up 90 yards and Ryan Nastor had one rush for 17 yards. McDaniel finished with 115 all purpose yards to lead the Tigers.

To go along with 16 receiving yards,  Chandler Tunney retuned a kick for 12 yards and two punts for 21 total yards. William Stanton had two kick returns tonight for 45 total yards, with his longest at 25 yards.

Joining Proulx with double figure tackles was Kevin May with 10 while hurrying the quarterback a pair of times. Carter Norfleet came up with nine tackles of which seven were solo stops while breaking up four plays. Greg Holsworth had some hard hits tonight as he also finished with nine tackles. Ayrton Bates was next in line with eight stops, three solo, as he broke up five plays for the Black and Orange. Tucker, Justin Garza and Jim Hildensperger each tallied seven tackles and Kyle Spaulding had six.  Both Adam DiBenedetto and Casey Shibuya recorded tackles for a loss.

Pomona-Pitzer had three players with more than 100 all purpose yards, with Luke Sweeney leading all players with 247, 220 rushing and 27 on kick returns. PP quarterback Jacob Caron rushed for 104 yards while going 22-for-45 for 212 yards and one touchdown to Ryan Randle. Max Reed was credited with both sacks of Collis and Justin Meng finished with 12 tackles for the Sagehens.

PP has possession for more than 39 minutes leaving the ball in the hands of the Black and Orange for just 20:38. The Sagehens ran more than twice as many offensive plays as the Tigers. Oxy was 2-for-2 in the red zone while PP was 3-for-5.

Occidental (4-1, 3-0 SCIAC) travels to the University of Redlands (4-1, 2-1) next Saturday, Oct. 23 to play the Bulldogs in a SCIAC showdown. Teams will take the field at 2:00 p.m.

Eyewitness report from Eagle Rock:

First, it was a pleasure sitting in the stands and not having my ears bleed from listening to the hysterical, screaming PA announcer. Thanks to whoever neutered him.

Next, I'm looking at the box score. I assume it's correct. Hard to believe Oxy won while being outgained 536-285, 28 first downs to 10, 94 plays to 42, and 39:22 to 20:38 possession time. Did Pomona really have 324 yards rushing and a 6.6 yd-per-carry average? How did Oxy manage a win out of that? Nice job.

The Tigers will have to play a lot better than that next week against UR, in Dan Selway's (presumably) last chance to beat Oxy.

Next Saturday's schedule:

Pomona (0-5, 0-2 SCIAC) @ CLU (4-1, 3-0) 1:00 p.m.
Whittier (1-4, 0-2) @ Claremont (4-1, 1-1) 1:00 p.m.
Oxy (4-1, 3-0) @ Redlands (4-1, 2-1) 2:00 p.m.
ULV (0-5, 0-3) @ Chapman (2-3) 7:00 p.m.

Oxy Bob:
I don't think you need to worry about Oxy playing better...........Redlands better hope that their offense plays a hell of a lot better.  It seems like the defense is continually on the field.  I just got back from the  Redlands/CMS game so I haven't had a chance to look up any stats, but if Redlands keeps throwing interceptions, fumbling the ball and dropping catch-able interceptions then you guys could take the week off, play your second string and still beat us.

This weeks ending score does not tell the entire story!  Being tied 7 to 7 in the fourth quarter was extremely stressful!  We seriously could have lost this game.  We finally got our act together (and with some mistakes from CMS) we managed to scrape a "W"!!!!!!
Next week will be interesting!

I hope the Bulldogs work out the kinks........plus playing at 2:00 instead of 7:00 is WRONG on so many levels!

Last night's Battle for the Drum was a surprisingly physical contest played in some "real" football weather.

I think the seeming imbalance in offensive stats is explained in part by the efficiency of Oxy's scoring drives (5 plays 2:27; 9 plays 3:59; 2 plays 0:07; 4 plays 0:24).

Nice pictures. OXY will have to play much better vs Redlands and Cal Who if they want a SCIAC title this year

HELP WANTED:

Looking for Pollsters for a "soon to be unveiled" D3 TOP 25 FAN POLL.

Publishing site: www.uwwfootball.blogspot.com

REQUIREMENTS:

1. Commit to submit a ballot ranking the D3 Teams 1-25 by stated deadline. I'm thinking that will be midnight on Mondays.
2. Research the teams and try to be as unbiased as possible in ranking them.
3. Think through your own philosophy as to how much to weigh previous ranking, won/loss record, your sense as to who would win head to head, national performances in recent years, quality wins, and whatever reasonable criteria you care to choose.
4. Submit a ballot EVERY WEEK by the deadline. Missing a deadline will be cause to forfeit your spot. Create and submit your ballot BEFORE viewing the D3football.com poll. You can look at previous weeks polls to get you started if you are having a hard time filling out the last few slots.

PURPOSE OF POLL

This poll is to promote meaningful and fun discussion on d3boards.com.  It is simply something that will be fun to contrast with D3football.com's poll. D3football.com's poll is the one legitimate poll we have in D3 football in my opinion.  This poll is not even intended to become #2. I just think it would be an interesting point of comparison and discussion.

HOW TO APPLY

Send me a private message. In your message indicate:
1. you are applying to be a pollster.
2. What team/conference you follow.
3. Whether you can submit a poll as early as this Thursday. (That is not mandatory, if everyone can we may do one this week).

WHO WILL BE CHOSEN?

The first 25 respondents will be our initial group of pollsters.  This group will remain the D3 FOOTBALL FAN POLL TOP 25 pollsters unless they resign their position or miss a deadline.  Pollsters, I will never post your names on the boards.  If you choose to, that is fine. If you are beyond the first 25 responses, your name will be placed on a "waiting list".  If there are fewer than 25 respondents by midnight on Wednesday, we will go with what we have and continue to have "open" slots to be filled.

Remember FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED!  ;)

Let's get back to how many of those Solute transfers are still on the squad.

Looks like CLU still has around around 20 transfers.

Poor OB and DOC....they can't get over that CLU is the new sheriff in town in the SCIAC...McEnroe knows what hes doing when he brings in transfers....they help the team immediately and play as starters.....they don't standon the sidelines and only come in to run out the clock

CLU is the team to beat...no doubt about it....sorry Redlands and Oxy

DOC you are so bitter....CLU pwned you so just accept it...and if they play again Cal Lu will beat you again....phone it in!!!!!!!
