Of course Cal Lu wants Chapman in the conference.  They will no longer be the academic doormat of the conference.

Freshmen Academic Profile

Average HS GPA: Chapman 3.67, Redlands 3.58
% GPA 3.75 or higher: Chapman 47%, Redlands 37%
% GPA 3.50 or higher: Chapman 67%, Redlands 58%
Students in top 10th of HS class: Chapman 48%, Redlands 31%
SAT Critical Reading 50 percentile: Chapman 547-661, Redlands 520-620
SAT Math 50 percentile: Chapman 568-678, Redlands 540-630
ACT 50 percentile: Chapman 25-29, Redlands 22-27

Looks like Chapman can wipe its academic feet on Redlands.

Thanks OB for showing the Chapman would indeed not be the Academic dormats of the SCIAC.
Using the same categories that OB used, Chapman would exceed several SCIAC schools in this area.
Cal Lu, Redlands, La Verne, Whittier. BUT is below Cal Tech, Pomona, Occidental, Claremont

Chapman academics are in the middle of the SCIAC

Coach Maynard assured me that the Dogs are focused on the next game at hand, so even if we begin to discuss what the regional rankings mean, it doesn't matter at this point other than it allows us to continue to bicker about how wrong OB is  :) ...What matters is the overall record at the end of the season....

Either way, a diploma from Redlands compared to that of Chapman in the real world, means squat when you compare either on of those two diplomas to a Stanford, Berkley or dare I say Harvard grad. I tend to agree with RFB: "a diploma gets you in the door, but you still have to walk through it." Meaning personal merit is more valued then the stamp on the degree. I think we can all agree on that?
It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up.

This tells me nothing. Last week I interviewed two candidates for an entry level engineer position. One graduated from Stanford and the other from San Diego State.

The graduate from San Diego State ran circles around the Stanford graduate on multiple levels. Guess who got the offer? My company and many others nationally are starting to look past the paper of where you graduated from. It's a growing trend that is here to stay.

I can't agree more with this. If you can prove to a company that you are young, intelligent, outgoing, and hungry, the "Mystique" of the school you attended means very little - its all about getting in the door and proving you are the best candidate. As long as you have that degree, I think where it is from has grown far less important. I can think of math majors that landed sales jobs, science majors that landed marketing jobs ... so what is on that paper is not as important as what you can prove in an interview.

Its kind of like Redlands football ... They look great on paper... ;-)

Redlands doesn't ONLY look good on PAPER, they looked pretty good on the field last week also!

A little work on field goal protection and execution and they might be ranked as high as 10.

Oct. 30th Predictions
Cal Lutheran over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
Redlands over La Verne
Occidental over SCIAC wannabe Chapman  :-[ (Does a loss get OXY's vote for Chapman into the SCIAC)
Whittier over Pomona-Pitzer

CLU GASHES CMS

-OFFENSE - 574 Total Yds
-Chambers - 116 yards rushing, 1 TD
-Rogers - 10 Catches, 123 yards, 1 TD
-Laudenslayer - 17/22, 321 yards, 4 TDs

-DEFENSE - Held Stags to just 54 yards passing on 4 completions, and kept their triple option running game in check for the most part.

Claremont had been statistically one of the best D's in the SCIAC... CLU looks to be hitting on all cylinders. No trap game here, they are coming to play... Gotta love it. One step closer to SCIAC CHAMPS.

Watch out Chapman - though it has no bearing on conference record (this year at least) look for the LU to come out and beat up on them. EVERY GAME COUNTS now to boost that regional ranking.

Again...............thank god for the Redlands Defense!  Just finished listening to the game on the radio and the offense seemed to be sluggish AGAIN TODAY!  They stress me out!

Chapman 28 Occidental 24

There goes the Oxy vote for getting in the SCIAC.....

SCIAC wantabe Chapman is 4-1 against SCIAC opponents this year. If they were in the SCIAC they would be tied with Redlands for 2nd place at this time.  BUT their next 2 games are against Cal Lu and Redlands. So the fun maybe over....

Panthers push past Tigers
ORANGE, Calif. (Oct. 30, 2010)

http://www.oxyathletics.com/sports/fball/2010-11/releases/103010fb_CU

In the final non-conference game of 2010, the Occidental College Tigers fell 28-24 to the Chapman University Panthers for the first time since 2004.

The Tigers held the Panthers to a three-and-out on the first possession of the game before scoring the first points of the game. Oxy wasted no time lighting up the scoreboard as they drove 68 yards on 11 plays, culminating in a one-yard rushing touchdown by Ryan Nastor. On the drive, quarterback Luke Collis found Nick Saraceni for a 26-yard completion, his longest of the evening.

Occidental held Chapman scoreless in the opening stanza, but just seconds into the second quarter the home squad scored, taking a 7-6 lead with 14:56 to play n the half.

Again, the Black and Orange responded when Nastor found a gap in the Chapman defense and scurried 49 yards into the end zone before Joshua Mun capped off the play with a point after, giving Oxy a 13-7 advantage.

That lead quickly disappeared at the hands and feet of CU senior wide receiver Chris Langstaff who scored back-to-back touchdowns en route to a game-high 256 all purpose yards. The first score came on an 85-yard punt return with the latter an 84 yard completion from quarterback Bret Visciglia, who was 8-for-14 in the game.

With just 1:06 remaining in the half, Saraceni returned the kick 15 yards to set up the Tigers on their own 37 yard line. Quick passes to Nate Sullivan and Saraceni and Wed McDaniel for 20,14 and seven yards, respectively got the Black and Orange into Chapman territory. Collis scurried for nine yards and a first down on a second and three. Another pass to McDaniel set up Mun for a 26 yard field goal pulled the Tigers closer to the Panthers, trailing just 21-16 at the intermission.

Despite maintaining possession for nearly 12 and half minutes in the second quarter, CU outscored Oxy 21-10.

On the second Tigers' possession out of the locker room, Collis found Bobby Phillips for a 17-yard TD pass. Occidental opted for a two-point conversion, which was successful as Collis found Nastor, regaining the lead 24-21 with 4:48 to play in the third.

The ensuing drive was the thorn in the Tigers' paws. Another long completion, from quarterback Michael Lahey to Ed Harris for 43 yards set up a sequence of rushes and passes, which culminated with a one yard rushing TD by Harris. Mauricio Alfonso capped off the play with the final point of the evening, giving the Panthers a 28-24 advantage with seconds to play in the third quarter.

The teams exchanged fumbles and recoveries on the first two drives of the fourth quarter, although neither team was able to capitalize. Brandon Ortega forced the Chapman fumble as the Tigers recovered the loose ball.

Oxy went for it on a fourth and four, and while Collis competed the pass to Nastor, the Tigers were just short of the first down. Occidental nor Chapman was able to find the end zone in the final period of play.

Collis completed 39-for-49 passes for 321 yards with no interceptions and one touchdown. His favorite targets tonight were Phillips and Matthew Tuckness who each nabbed seven catches. Nastor finished with six and Saraceni, Sullivan and McDaniel each caught five.

Saraceni returned to the field after suffering a concussion two weeks ago and led all Tigers with 119 all purpose yards, followed by Nastor who was a yard shy of the century mark in the game. Jordan Lance finished with a pair of kick returns for 30 yards.

The defense was paced once again by Nate Proulx, who led all players with 11 total tackles. Both he and Greg Holsworth finished with six solo stops (nine total) as they combined for the only sack of the night, pushing CU back seven yards. Senior Kyle Spaulding tallied eight, five solo tackles and Carter Norfleet added six, all solo, and broke up a pair of plays.

The last time Occidental dropped back-to-back games was in 2003 to Pomona-Pitzer and Redlands.

Occidental (5-2 4-3 , 4-1 3-1 SCIAC) will host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Patterson Field for Homecoming next Saturday, Nov. 6 at 2:30 p.m.

Here are some images from last night's loss to Chapman:

Another one of those typically tight SCIAC type games (although Chapman isn't in yet) that we have gotten used to falling our way . . . but didn't.

Also, thanks dahlby for the tour of your athletic facilities.  Very impressive.

Oxy Fan,

Great action shots!
Nice meeting you guys.
It was my pleasure to show you around.
Tight game. Both teams kept coming back.
I was fearful that you had it when Oxy was
down inside the twenty iin the fourth quarter.

Cheers!
