"History is not on the side of the Bulldogs. In coach Mike Maynard's 20 years the committee has not taken a second-place team out of the SCIAC.

The Bulldogs (6-1, 4-1) are second behind No. 22 Cal Lutheran (6-1, 5-0) and lost the head-to-head meeting 24-22.

What would weigh in the Bulldogs' favor would be the current economic climate which makes it logical for the committee to give Redlands the berth and a first-round playoff rematch with Cal Lutheran because it's just a bus ride rather than a plane trip for another team.

"It wouldn't seem likely given history, but it makes sense from an economic standpoint," Maynard said. "We're going to go out and do our job and hopefully convince them that we're worthy."

I would have to check the current handbook but Maynard has not only been on the regional selection committee but is part of the national (final) committee too.

Mike Maynard's time on the committee is up. The West Region reps on the national committee are the coaches at Knox and Concordia-Moorhead, and the SCIAC is represented on the West committee by the La Verne coach.

Every year the same discussion. Every year one SCIAC team gets into the playoffs. This year will be no different.

OK, back to your speculation about something that will never happen.

Love that the ConLu football player arrest article is listed under the "what we're reading" tab on the front page of d3football.com.

The news hasn't reached the SID at CLU yet. Nothing on their web site. I guess if you don't say anything about it then it didn't happen.

There was this in the Ventura County Star:

Quote
Cal Lutheran football coach Ben McEnroe suspended wide receiver Clinton Panton Jr. indefinitely following Panton's arrest over the weekend.
...

"I have suspended him indefinitely from the football team and we are trying to gather more information about the situation," McEnroe said.

Coach, here's some more information, courtesy of Ventura PD:

Bob,

Part of me can't blame Panton for finding trouble, because according this staff writer for the CLU student newspaper, CLU has zero social life on campus.  Guess the place is so boring that you have to go off campus to have some fun.   ;)

Everyone can make excuses and judgments based on what they see, hear, read, etc. so what else is there to say?

1.) Every college campus in America has rules and standards, and every college campus in America has kids that find a way to have a good time regardless. Whether they "break" the rules or not - if you can't have a good time on a college campus in this country then you are probably the boring one - don't blame it on the school.

I had the time of my life at Cal Lu - both on and off campus. It's not a college town by any stretch, and yes we had some neighbors that weren't fond of us, but we still found a way to make it a great and FUN experience. A majority of the smaller private schools in so cal are in similar communities with more affluent, older demographic and residential areas surrounding the campuses. Who cares? I have many memories, many nights with few memories for one reason or another - but needless to say the students that TRY to have a good time are successful in that.

How one student writer's opinion affects the view of an entire campus' social life confuses me. She probably wrote that in her dorm on a Saturday night.

2.) I'm not going to comment on the article or Paton's situation because it's a lose-lose for me to do so. Feel free to take your shots, as I would too. It's unfortunate and tough for the whole program and school to deal with, but it happened and consequences will be paid by all parties (CLU, the football program, etc.), not just Paton. But again, let's not lose sight that there are generations of Cal Lu football players (Including transfers like Coach Mac) that came through the program and represented it well. To throw a whole program (and to me that includes all alumni) under the bus because of situation involving one guy, is a stretch. Ask Dale Widolff  :D

Well...I 100% agree that you can't throw all of CLU into the well because of one players action. (it's fun to take some shots!)  HOWEVER, what you can bring up is that if CLU's staff is willing to let a convicted felon with a drug rap transfer in then just what else might the staff tolerate?  I don't know if that's fair or not but it's a door that Paton's arrest has now opened.

McEnroe's a good man. Doesn't need these distractions. It just takes the luster off the lucky start.

BUT! Mr. Kingsman4 (and Mr.T who really has disappeared) did not the squad have a night of debauchery, oh, about 2006, and then play like elephants eating the fruit of the marula tree and losing to CMS?

I'm a tad water-logged but I remember something to that effect.

I remember getting beat by a tough Claremont team in 2006, not much more to it. There were a few players suspended for the 1st quarter because they had gone out during that week - but none of them were in any legal trouble. Just a choice by the coach at that time to send a message to the team in regards to having too much after hours fun during the week. Wait a minute, I thought Cal Lu students didn't ever have anything fun to do???

This... is a simple game. You throw the ball. You hit the ball. You catch the ball.  "There are three types of baseball players: those who make things happen, those who watch it happen, and those who wonder what happened."
